Two cases of right congenital diaphragmatic hernia with stable respiratory condition: Two case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Right congenital diaphragmatic defect (CDH) has been reported poor prognosis. However, laterality of the defect as the prognos … mal vaginal delivery at 38 weeks, 5 days, and thoraco-abdominal X ray showed right CDH but no small intestinal atresia. Surgery performed on day 3 found liver herniation into the diaphragmatic defect. Subsequently, bacterial infection occurred and was treated with the antibiotics, but her respiratory condition remained stable. She was discharged on day 49. DISCUSSI …

Comparison of two different methods for cervicovaginal reconstruction: a long-term follow-up.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: As a consequence of the evolution of surgery in reconstructive techniques, cervicovaginal reconstruction has become an option for patients diagnosed with congenital cervical and vaginal atresia. This study was aimed at comparing long-term clinical and anatomical results in patients who had cervicovaginal reconstruction with either a small intestinal submucosa (SIS) graft or a split-thickness skin (STS) graft. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 34 patients who underwent cervicovaginal reconstruction using SIS or STS grafts between January 2012 and August 20

The Role of Fibroblast Growth Factor 10 Signaling in Duodenal Atresia.

INTRODUCTION: Duodenal atresia (DA) is a congenital bowel obstruction requiring major surgery in the first week of life. Three morphological … ogy of DA. We focus on research regarding FGF10/FGFR2b signaling and its role in duodenal and other intestinal atresia. Further, we outline planned future research in this area, that we consider necessary to validate and better understand this murine model in order to successfully translate this research into clinical practice. CONCLUSION: Determining the etiology …

Concomitant Gallbladder Agenesis with Methimazole Embryopathy.

BACKGROUND Methimazole embryopathy is caused by maternal methimazole intake during early pregnancy. It causes fetal malformations such as choanal atresia, esophageal atresia, aplasia cutis, omphalomesenteric duct remnants, urachal remnants, and omphalocele. Gallbladder agenesis is sometimes complicated with other malformations, but there have been no reports of gallbladder agenesis due to methimazole or concomitant methimazole embryopathy with gallbladder agenesis. CASE REPORT The mother of a male neonate had taken methimazole for hyperthyroidism until pregnancy was recognized at 7 weeks of ge

Laparoscope-assisted creation of a neovagina using pedicled ileum segment transfer.

BACKGROUND: To present our experience of vaginal reconstruction with the use of a pedicled ileum segment and laparoscope assistance, and to analyze its complications and long-term anatomic and functional results. METHODS: The abdominal and perineal approaches were performed simultaneously with the patient in a special position. Under the guidance of laparoscopy, the target ileal segment was harvested and transposed down to the perineum through an artificial tunnel between the bladder and the rectum. A silicon vaginal tutor was introduced into the vaginal cavity and maintained all day long for

Initial experience with surgical telementoring in pediatric laparoscopic surgery using remote presence technology.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of remote presence technology in surgical mentoring. METHODS: A self-propelled robot, which is controlled from a wireless remote control station (Laptop computer)and provides two-way audio and visual communication, was used to allow an experienced endoscopic surgeon to provide mentoring during three unique laparoscopic cases. This first was a laparoscopic exploration in a 9-month-old child with clinical evidence of intermittent obstruction but nondiagnostic imaging studies. The second was a 4-day-old, 3-kg infant with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and the

Situs inversus: the complex inducing neonatal intestinal obstruction.

Situs inversus (SI) complicating neonatal bowel obstruction presents a challenging complex, and to facilitate rational decision making for treatment, we have reviewed 23 cases of abdominal SI seen in our hospital over the last 25 years. Preoperative roentgenographic studies most always predicted SI, the specific patient groups including: 12 abdominal SI with dextrocardia, 10 abdominal SI with levocardia, and 1 with partial heterotaxia. Major intraabdominal anomalies produced surgical emergencies in 7 neonates in the first year, 6 of these 7 being in the first month of life. In these 7 patients

Radiographic measurement of intestinal length among children with short bowel syndrome: Retrospective determination remains problematic.

PURPOSE: Small bowel length is the most reliable predictor of enteral independence in pediatric short bowel syndrome. Retrospectively measured bowel lengths on upper GI with small bowel follow-through (UGI/SBFT) were compared to operative measurements. METHODS: A pediatric radiologist and surgical trainees blinded to operative measurements retrospectively analyzed UGI/SBFT studies using the digital radiography curved measurement tool. Children with SBS and severe intestinal failure (parenteral nutrition >90days) at a multidisciplinary intestinal failure program 2002-2015 were included. Data w

Duodenal atresia: not always a double bubble.

A newborn infant with a prenatal diagnosis of duodenal atresia and abdominal radiographs demonstrating air in distal bowel is presented. An upper gastrointestinal series revealed complete duodenal obstruction and duodenal atresia was confirmed at surgery. The significance of distal bowel gas and the embryological development of this unusual entity is discussed.

Prenatal counselling of small bowel atresia: watch the fluid!

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate polyhydramnios as a sign of extreme disproportion of atretic segments in small bowel atresia (SBA). METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with a prenatal diagnosis (PD) of SBA undergoing neonatal surgical treatment were reviewed retrospectively. Parameters recorded were gestational age, birth weight, surgical procedure, rate of complications, parenteral nutrition (PN) days and length of stay (LOS). Patients were divided into two groups: Group A with delayed anastomosis and Group B with direct anastomosis. RESULTS: Seventeen subjects were in Group A while 11 were in Group B. T

MRI of the fetal gastrointestinal tract.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the MRI patterns of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in normal fetuses and some GI tract abnormalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective (1996-1998) and prospective (1999-2000) study of 48 fetal abdominal MRI scans was performed between 23 and 38 weeks of gestation. T1-weighted (T1-W) fast gradient-echo (Flash 2D) and T2-weighted (T2-W) HASTE sequences were obtained on a 1.5-T unit, in frontal and sagittal planes, after maternal premedication. Fresh meconium was also studied. RESULTS: Normal patterns (40 cases): the rectum was seen in all cases and exhibited meco

Additional Anomalies in Children with Gastroschisis and Omphalocele: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital abdominal wall defects might be associated with other anomalies, such as atresia in gastroschisis and cardiac anomalies in omphalocele patients. However, in the current literature, an overview of these additional anomalies and potential patient-specific risk factors is missing. Therefore, we aimed to assess the prevalence of associated anomalies and their patient-specific risk factors in patients with gastroschisis and omphalocele. METHODS: A mono-center retrospective cohort study between 1997 and 2023 was performed. Outcomes were the presence of any additional anomalie

Gallstone ileus at 17 years after living donor liver transplantation: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gallstone ileus (GI) occurs in <0.1% of all cases of mechanical bowel obstruction. There have been a few reports of GI occurring after Kasai procedures or Roux-en-Y anastomosis for bariatric surgery. We herein report a case of GI that occurred over 17 years after liver transplantation (LT). CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman who had undergone living donor LT for biliary atresia at 16 years old and had been regularly followed on an outpatient basis in our hospital presented with the sudden onset of increased abdominal distension, pain, and nausea. Enhanced abdominal computed tomograp
