PURPOSE: X-ray film registry records were reviewed to better understand the changing nature of diverticular disease (DD) of the colon in Japan.
RESULTS: Among 6,849 patients undergoing barium enema examination during a eight-year period from 1985 to 1992, this condition was found in 1,074 patients (15.7 percent), including 702 males (65.4 percent) and 372 females (34.6 percent). Although there has been controversy about the early detection of prostate carcinoma by mass screening, we carried out an investigational study of such screening, using digital rectal examination (DRE) and serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) determination in Hokkaido, Japan. A nationwide survey of patients in Japan with spinocerebellar degenerations (SCD), including SDS and SND, was conducted from 1988 to 1989. The survey consisted of two parts. Although the mortality rate of diabetes mellitus in Japan is much lower than the rates in Western countries, an increasing trend has been evident over the last 40 years as a whole. Nodular hepatic lesions caused by larval Echinococcus multilocularis were found in a four-year-old female thoroughbred race horse born and raised in Hokkaido. Before detection of the infection, the infected animal was transported around Honshu for racing. The present disclosure of hydatidosis in a race horse raises concern over the potential danger of spreading the infection throughout Japan by horses possibly infected in Hokkaido.

This study was aimed at examining the effect of familial predisposition on cancer incidence in a cohort population. Family history (FH) of cancer and reproductive history were obtained by a simple questionnaire from about 40,000 participants in a cervical cancer screening program visiting screening clinics in 1977. Changes in infant mortality rate (IM) in Japan were observed over a 41-year period, since the end of the Second World War (1947-1987). Both neonatal mortality rate (NM) and infant mortality rate excluding neonatal deaths (IEN) were measured. It was observed that IM had considerably decreased during the observation period. A decrease of IEN contributed greatly to this fall till the 1960s and less so since the 1970s. A 30-year-old man with cerebral palsy showed cutaneous actinomycosis of the extremities. The diagnosis was confirmed by the histopathologic finding of "sulfur granules." Actinomyces israelii was not cultured as is often the case with actinomycosis. The disease was successfully treated with piperacillin and then with minocycline. This is, to the author's knowledge, the first report in English on actinomycosis from Japan, and the rarity of its occurrence in the extremities is documented.
