Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and its phenotype variant, Gardner's syndrome, constitute a rare autosomal dominant inherited disorder. They are characterised by the development, generally during the second and third decades of life, of multiple adenomatous polyps in the colon and rectum. These polyps have a high risk of subsequently becoming malignant, which normally occurs in the third and fourth decades of life. The phenotypical features of FAP can be very variable. As well as colorectal polyps, these individuals can present with extra-colonic symptoms, among which are particularly: ga

This study attempts to define the clinicopathologic aspects of extragnathic giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) by contrasting it with the much better recognized GCRG of jaw bones and highlights the manifestations that are unique to the extragnathic localization. Ninety-one GCRGs of 89 patients, 22 in jaw bones and 69 in the extragnathic bones, were examined. Females were affected twice as frequently as males in both groups. The age distribution of extragnathic GCRGs overlaps that of gnathic counterparts. Small bones of the hands (17 lesions) and feet (16 lesions) were the most common sites

Four cases of hemifacial microsomia with unilateral anophthalmia are presented and various nosologic problems in the branchial arch dysplasias are discussed. Hemifacial microsomia with unilateral anophthalmia may or may not represent a formal genesis syndrome and nosologic entity different from other types of hemifacial microsomia. The disorder is not in reality a branchial arch dysplasia, but rather a complex dysmorphogenetic syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a machine learning model using computed tomography (CT) images for preoperative differential diagnosis of ameloblastoma (AM) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), and to compare its performance with that of an oral and maxillofacial radiologist.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study analyzed CT images from 154 patients (70 AM, 84 OKC). Seventeen clinical and imaging features were extracted and compiled into a CSV file. The data were randomly divided into five subsets for five-fold cross-validation. In each fold, 80% of the data were used for training and 20% for testing. Tw

BACKGROUND: Calcifying odontogenic cyst was described first by Gorlin et al. in 1962; since then several hundreds of cases had been reported. In 1981, Praetorius et al. proposed a widely used classification. Afterwards, several authors proposed different classifications and discussed its neoplastic potential. The 2005 WHO Classification of Odontogenic Tumours re-named this entity as calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour (CCOT) and defined the clinico-pathological features of the ghost cell odontogenic tumours, the CCOT, the dentinogenic ghost cell tumour (DGCT) and the ghost cell odontogenic ca

BACKGROUND: Pilomatrixoma, craniopharyngioma, and calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor are the main entities presenting ghost cells as an important histological feature, in spite their quite different clinical presentation; it seems that they share a common pathway in the formation of these cells. The aim of this study is to examine and compare the characteristics of ghost and other cells that form these lesions.
METHODS: Forty-three cases including 21 pilomatrixomas, 14 craniopharyngiomas, and eight calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors were evaluated by immunohistochemistry for cytokeratins,

BACKGROUND: Mucosal thickening and mucosal antral cyst (MAC) in the maxillary sinus are incidental findings in panoramic radiographs.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 5021 participants in a nationally representative Health 2000 Health Examination Survey using panoramic radiography.
RESULTS: The prevalence of mucosal thickening was 12% and of MACs 7%, both being twice as frequent in men as in women. Mucosal thickening was most common in the 40- to 49-year age group, whereas MACs were most often seen in younger age groups. Pathologic dental findings and root canal treatments were signifi

To examine the properties of shadow and ghost cells, 3 kinds of antibodies were raised against human hair proteins and their immunoreactivity was examined in tumors expressing those cells: pilomatrixoma, 14 cases; craniopharyngioma, 17 cases; and calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), 14 cases. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blot analyses demonstrated that 2 polyclonal antibodies, PA-HP1 and PA-HP 2, reacted strongly with type I acidic and type II neutral/basic hard alpha-keratins. The other monoclonal antibody, MA-HP1, reacted with type II neutral/basic hard

Background: Gardner syndrome is a rare genetic cancer predisposition disorder characterized by intestinal polyposis, multiple osteomas, and soft and hard tissue tumors. Dental anomalies are present in approximately 30%-70% of patients with Gardner syndrome and can be discovered during routine dental examinations. However, sometimes the diagnosis is challenging due to the high clinical variability and incomplete clinical picture. Herein, we report a family with various dental and bone anomalies, in which the definitive diagnosis was established with the help of a comprehensive genetic analysis

Cysts are considered as nonneoplastic benign lesions that, when present for a long period of time, can cause some discomfort, especially related to the treatment form. Among the types of cysts of the maxilla, the dentigerous cyst (DC) presents substances between the dental follicle and the crown of the tooth with high potential for resorption, and the odontogenic keratocyst tumor (OKT) characterizes for its noticed rapid growth pattern and the possibility to develop carcinomas in the lesion wall. The DC is the most common type among the developing odontogenic cystic lesions, while the OKT repr

We report here a case of vertical alveolar distraction osteogenesis with many complications that required further surgical interventions. A 54-year-old man underwent mandibular resection followed by iliac bone grafting as the result of large mandibular odontogenic keratocyst. Eleven months later, alveolar vertical distraction osteogenesis was applied to the patient for prosthetic rehabilitation. Fracture of the basal bone occurred in the consolidation period, and the fracture was fixed by the titanium miniplate system. Radiographic examination after completion of distraction osteogenesis confi

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study is to compare piezoelectric surgery to the conventional rotatory surgery in mandibular cyst enucleation, and to determine the 2 method's suitability and the postoperative outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty patients were included in the study. 35 male and 45 female, which showed cystic mandibular lesions, compared with the inferior alveolar nerve or the mental nerve. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. In the test group, cystectomy was performed using conventional rotatory instrumentation (rotatory-group), and in the other one piezoelec

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) constitute between 1.8% and 21.5% of odontogenic cysts and are associated with higher propensity to recur than other odontogenic cysts following surgical removal. Previous studies have been performed to identify clinico-pathological predictive factors in relation to such behaviour. The relationship between the presence of hyalinisation and recurrence of the OKC has not been explored.
METHODS: A total of 110 OKCs were selected, comprising 53 non-recurrent cases, 50 cases known to subsequently recur and seven syndromic cases. Cases were examined blind,

BACKGROUND: Unicystic ameloblastoma, an odontogenic neoplasm, presents clinical and radiographic similarities with dentigerous and radicular cysts, non-neoplastic lesions. It is not always possible to reach a final diagnosis with the incisional biopsy, leading to inappropriate treatment. The BRAFV600E activating mutation has been reported in a high proportion of ameloblastomas. The purpose of the study was to assess the utility of the detection of the BRAFV600E mutation in the differential diagnosis of unicystic ameloblastoma with dentigerous and radicular cysts.
METHODS: Twenty-six archival

BACKGROUND: The aggressive biological behavior of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), unlike that of other odontogenic cysts, has argued for its recent re-classification as a neoplasm, 'keratocystic odontogenic tumor'. Identification of mutations in the PTCH gene in some of the OKCs that were expected to produce truncated proteins, resulting in loss of control of the cell cycle, provided additional support for OKCs having a neoplastic nature.
METHODS: We investigated the immunohistochemical expression of the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway-related proteins, PTCH, smoothened (SMO) and GLI-1

Giant cell reparative granulomas (GCRGs) are lytic lesions that occur predominantly in the gnathic bones and occasionally in the small bones of the hands and feet. They are morphologically indistinguishable from, and are regarded as synonymous with, solid variant of aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) in extragnathic sites. Identification of USP6 gene rearrangements in primary ABC has made possible investigating potential pathogenetic relationships with other morphologic mimics. USP6 gene alterations in giant cell-rich lesions (GCRG/ABC) of small bones of the hands and feet have not been previously st

Down syndrome and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis have been associated with ligament laxity, specifically the atlantoaxial ligament, which maintains the proper positioning of the cervical first and second vertebrae. The joint consists of different pathological processes, and it is paramount that individuals with either condition be screened appropriately before surgery is contemplated. The purpose of this paper was to present a case of an individual with both conditions and describe precautionary measures that were undertaken to safely complete dental treatment under general anesthesia and avoid
