Little is known about what has been termed cultural gerontology, or the experience of ageing among members of particular ethnic minority groups. One of the greatest gaps in current knowledge relates to the subjective health status and use of health services among elderly people in ethnic minorities, particularly those who are Jewish. The research results reported here are from a survey of elderly people in City and Hackney, London. They show that Jewish respondents were more likely than other elderly people to report problems with emotional well-being, mental and physical health problems and p

The hereditary dystonias include a clinically heterogeneous group of movement disorders varying in symptoms, age of onset, and drug responsiveness. Dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH), the enzyme that converts dopamine to norepinephrine, has been implicated in dystonia because of increased serum levels of DBH in some patients, the influence of catecholaminergic drugs on the human phenotypes, and altered norepinephrine levels in several brain regions in dystonia patients and in genetically dystonic rodents. In addition, markers linked to the dystonia gene in two ethnic groups map close to the DBH l

The South African Ashkenazi Jewish population is described in terms of the prevailing frequencies of the genes at 25 red cell enzyme and serum protein loci and 4 placental enzyme loci. Variation was encountered in 23 of these systems. The Tay-Sachs allele which occurs at polymorphic frequencies in Ashkenazi populations was found at a frequency of 0.022, which suggests that approximately 1 baby with Tay-Sachs disease could be expected out of every 2,000 born in this community should preventive measures not be taken. The atypical serum pseudocholinesterase cholinesterase allele was encountered a

BACKGROUND: Differences in socioeconomic status and ethnicity are linked to disparities in health outcomes, which can affect how consistently patients treat abnormal screening results and cause minority groups to be diagnosed at more advanced stages of disease.
OBJECTIVES: To compare epidemiological and clinical parameters between Jewish and Arab women who were diagnosed with cervical cancer at Ziv Medical Center during a 10-year period.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of consecutive women diagnosed with cervical cancer at a single institution between 2014 and 2024.

Infertility, affecting one in six couples, is often related to the male partner's congenital and/or environmental conditions or complications postsurgery. This retrospective study examines the link between orchiopexy for undescended testicles (UDT) and testicular torsion (TT) in childhood and adult fertility as assessed through sperm analysis. The study involved the analysis of semen samples from 7743 patients collected at Soroka University Medical Center (Beer Sheva, Israel) between January 2009 and December 2017. Patients were classified into two groups based on sperm concentration: those wi

INTRODUCTION: Pre-malignant cervical disease and invasive cervical cancer present a significant global health burden with respect to morbidity and mortality, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection typically manifests for the first time in adolescence. We aimed to identify adolescent sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics associated with subsequent risk for pre-malignant cervical disease and cervical cancer, in a country that offers free screening and HPV vaccines.
METHODS: This historical cohort study included 969 123 Israeli women examin

Mutations in more than 150 genes are responsible for inherited hearing loss, with thousands of different, severe causal alleles that vary among populations. The Israeli Jewish population includes communities of diverse geographic origins, revealing a wide range of deafness-associated variants and enabling clinical characterization of the associated phenotypes. Our goal was to identify the genetic causes of inherited hearing loss in this population, and to determine relationships among genotype, phenotype, and ethnicity. Genomic DNA samples from informative relatives of 88 multiplex families, a

BACKGROUND: Four main processes determine pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) antibiotic-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (ANSP) carriage: reduction of PCV serotypes, increase of non-PCV serotypes, potential overall reduction in carriage, and within-serotype nonsusceptibility resulting from continuous antibiotic pressure. The post-PCV implementation dynamics of these components were examined in young children from 2 distinct ethnic populations: Jewish and Bedouin.
METHODS: We performed ongoing, prospective, population-based, active surveillance initiated at the time of 7- and 13-valen

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration with ubiquitin-positive inclusions (FTLD-U) is one of the most common pathological findings associated with the clinical FTLD syndromes. However, molecular characterization with genetic sequencing and protein expression techniques are recognizing many new subtypes for FTLDs. FTLDs are diverse and new nomenclature schemes have been proposed based on the molecular defects that are being discovered ( Mackenzie et al., 2010 , Acta Neuropathologica, 119, 1). Adult polyglucosan body disease (APBD) is a very rare disorder associated with systemic neurological signs a

Positive selection for inherited mutations in breast and ovarian cancer predisposing genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, may contribute to the high frequency of BRCA mutations among the Ashkenazi Jewish population. Impact of BRCA mutations on fertility has not been generally explored in epidemiologic studies. There are reports of distorted sex ratios in BRCA carrier families but these findings have been attributed to bias. We investigated the effect of BRCA mutations on female fertility and offspring sex ratio in a study of 260 Ashkenazi Jewish women with ovarian cancer and 331 controls, unselected for ag

In this study, I explored intended response to aggression among adolescents. I drew hypotheses from social identity theory, cost/benefit considerations, and social information processing model. I asked 217 Jewish and Muslim male adolescents in this study to assess their intended use of aggression in 12 hypothetical conflict situations (vignettes), in which I manipulated the opponent's religion, gender, acquaintance, and severity of aggression. I mainly found that male adolescents respond to aggression by same-religion opponents more moderately than to cross-religion aggression; their response

This qualitative study investigated how Holocaust survivors managed to lead "normal" lives after experiencing incomprehensible horror. It was based on structural dissociation theory (O. Van der Hart, E. R. S. Nijenhuis, & K. Steele, 2006), which postulates that when people encounter traumatic events that they cannot integrate into their ongoing mental lives, their personalities may divide into 2 distinct action systems: the apparently normal part of the personality (ANP; involving systems that manage functions of daily life) and the emotional part of the personality (EP; involving systems rela

The study investigated the effects of World War II (WWII) on psychological and social functioning of Jewish and non-Jewish survivors 60 years after the war. The authors hypothesized that the level of posttraumatic symptoms, depression, and social isolation of survivors who were at least 5 years old (but younger than 18) in the last year of WWII would be predicted by the extent of traumatic loss, (i.e., death of parent[s]) and age at the end of WWII. Data were collected from 211 individuals living in Poland, ages 66-80; 30% were Jewish Holocaust survivors. Current posttraumatic stress disorder

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether oral contraceptive (OC) use, childbearing, breastfeeding and tubal ligation differ between ovarian cancer cases with and without a BRCA1/2 mutation.
METHODS: A case-only study of 242 Jewish women with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer. Women were genotyped for three Ashkenazi founder mutations (185delAG and 5382insC in BRCA1 and 6174delT in BRCA2). We obtained data on OC use, childbearing, breastfeeding, gynecologic surgeries and other reproductive factors from each woman. We compared the frequencies of these risk factors in carriers and non-carriers using unc

This paper examines the physiological preferences of Jewish-Israeli donor insemination (DI) recipients regarding the desirable donor. (1) By comparing recipients' own physiognomy with that of a hypothetical donor, we explore some of the social potentials of DI in its emerging democratized form. We examine prevailing notions regarding the 'natural family' and 'family resemblance' and query the relative weight of the natural vs. the consumer model as applied to one's own family through considerations regarding physical appearance. While examining the 'natural family' concept as a limit in the ma

Male breast cancer is a rare disorder, and little is known about the molecular mechanisms associated with the tumorigenic process. We genotyped 31 Jewish Israeli males with breast cancer for the predominant Jewish BRCA1 (185delAG, 5382InsC) and BRCA2 (6174delT) germline mutations: 11 individuals from high-risk families and 20 patients unselected for family history of cancer. Two patients of the high-risk group (18.2%) displayed germline mutations: one harbored the 185delAG BRCA1 mutation, and the other the 6174delT mutation in BRCA2. None of the unselected patients displayed any mutation. In 2
