PURPOSE: To describe the ocular surface disorders of 362 patients with severe active atopic dermatitis (AD) treated in the Ophthalmology Department of Kobe University Hospital and Kobe Rosai Hospital Eye Clinics during the period 1994-1996.
METHODS: Routine ophthalmic examinations as well as tear film break-up time (BUT) and Schirmer tests were carried out.
RESULTS: Lid eczema (65.7%), atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and superficial punctate keratopathy (67.5%) were the dominant ocular diseases in these patients. Tear function tests showed a BUT value of less than 10 seconds in 62.4% of the eye

BACKGROUND: Cornea plana is an extremely rare, congenital hereditary malformation of the corneo-scleral shape. The curvatures of cornea and sclera are nearly equal with an indistinct limbus. In addition to the flatness, there is a peripheral sclerocornea that produces a pseudomicrocornea. The low corneal refraction and the short anterior segment often result in hyperopia. Duration and intensity of pain induced by instillation of an acid local anesthetic eyedrop were compared in 321 normals and 77 KCS-patients. The medium duration of pain was increased in KCS-patients (16.23 s) compared to normals (7.64 s). Also the main intensity of pain was increased (KCS: 1.34, normals 0.63).
