A genomic approach to nutritional, pharmacological and genetic issues of faba bean (Vicia faba): prospects for genetic modifications.

Cultivated faba bean (Vicia faba) is widely used as human food, especially in Europe, Northern Africa and China.  In view of its superior feeding value over field peas or other legumes, it is also widely used as animal feed for a variety of species.   V. faba also contains medically important components such as 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (levo-DOPA, L-DOPA), the principal treatment used for Parkinson's disease patients.  However, this species also contains several antinutritional components, including the pyrimidine glycosides vicine and convicine; phytates; and the sucrose galactosides includ

Cryptococcus neoformans gene expression during experimental cryptococcal meningitis.

Cryptococcus neoformans, an encapsulated basidiomycete fungus of medical importance, is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier and causing meningitis in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. To gain insight into the adaptation of the fungus to the host central nervous system (CNS), serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) was used to characterize the gene expression profile of C. neoformans cells recovered from the CNS of infected rabbits. A SAGE library was constructed, and 49,048 tags were sequenced; 16,207 of these tags were found to represent unique sequences or tag

[Acute and chronic injuries after electrical accidents].

BACKGROUND: Electrical accidents are potentially fatal incidents with effect on the cardiovascular, nerve and musculoskeletal systems and on the skin (burns). The electrical engineering industry points out that the follow-up of injured persons from site of accident to hospital is quite random. This paper gives a review of the current literature and proposes guidelines for the follow-up of victims of electrical accidents. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A search of the literature was conducted on Medline, Embase, Biosis, Healthline, the Cochrane Library, the ISI citation databases, and on several other s

Effectiveness of interprofessional education for medical and nursing professionals and students on interprofessional educational outcomes: A systematic review.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Patient safety is a global health priority as unsafe care is a principal cause of death and disability. Ineffective interprofessional communication and collaboration among nursing and medical professionals and students contribute to unsafe practices. Interprofessional education provides opportunities to strengthen nurse-physician collaboration and enhance patient care. However, there is inconclusive evidence regarding interprofessional education effectiveness. This review aims to systematically evaluate interprofessional education effectiveness for nursing and medical profe

Impact of Post-Surgical Therapies on Endoscopic and External Dacryocystorhinostomy: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Epiphora is a common ophthalmologic sign that is most commonly caused by distal acquired lacrimal obstruction. Recent data have demonstrated that external dacryocystorhinostomy (EXT-DCR) and endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (END-DCR) can be considered the treatments of choice. However, different post-surgical medical therapies are available and are currently used to improve surgical outcomes, although no direct comparison has been performed. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the influence of post-surgical medical treatments on END-DCR and EXT-DCR outcomes. METHODS: A structured sea

Efficacy and safety of trabeculectomy versus micro-invasive glaucoma procedures (MIGPs) in managing glaucoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Trabeculectomy remains a standard filtration procedure for substantial intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering but is associated with clinically relevant postoperative morbidity. Micro-invasive glaucoma procedures (MIGPs), encompassing minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and minimally invasive bleb-forming glaucoma surgery (MIBS), have been increasingly adopted to potentially improve safety while maintaining acceptable efficacy. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety of trabeculectomy versus MIGPs in glauco

The Use of Melatoninergic Antidepressants for Stabilization of Remission in Depression Comorbid with Alcohol Abuse, Anxiety or Neuropsychiatric Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders and is associated with a significant increase in the risk of mental and somatic comorbidities. The chronobiological theory of the pathogenesis of depression explains the relationship between the symptoms of depression and disturbance of circadian rhythm regulation. Disrupted circadian rhythms are also observed in other disorders such as alcohol use disorder, anxiety disorders, epilepsy, and Parkinson's disease. Therefore, there is a growing interest in the use of medications with a melatoninergic mechanism of action in the treat

Synovectomy in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: A systematic review [corrected].

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is an inflammatory arthropathy with onset in children younger than 16 years. Treatment is primarily medical; however, surgical interventions, such as arthroscopic or open synovectomy, can be beneficial. Many studies have investigated synovectomy in JIA, but the results of these studies have not been synthesized to our knowledge. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of the literature reporting synovectomy as a treatment for JIA to provide clinical recommendations regarding its risks and benefits. METHODS: On March 8, 2022, we searched the
