Analysis of local immunity in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and lower lip.

Antitumor immunity plays an important role in the development of and protection against malignancy. In general, patients with cancer are known to be immunologically compromised. The objective of this study was to evaluate local immunity in squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the tongue and lower lip by immunohistochemistry, using anti-CD3, -CD4, -CD8, -CD25 and -zeta antibodies. Immunoexpression at the invasive front was compared considering anatomical tumor location and metastasis. The CD4/CD8 ratio was calculated for each case and associated with the variables. CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD25+ cell

[The radial forearm free flap in oro-maxillo-facial reconstruction. Experience of a multidisciplinary team approach--maxillofacial and plastic surgery].

The treatment of extended oro-maxillofacial lesions is a difficult task. Free flaps are the optimal reconstruction method in well defined situations. Though not improving survival, they have lead to a lower morbidity and to the improvement of the patient's life quality. A great step forward was represented by the radial forearm flap. This paper reflects the experience of a team approach (oro-maxillofacial and plastic surgery). The radial forearm free flap was considered as the optimal solution for 22 patients with defects concerning the tongue and/or mouth floor (8), the lower lip (7), or othe

Preliminary comparison of the endoscopic transnasal vs the sublabial transseptal approach for clinically nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the advantages and disadvantages of an endoscopic transnasal approach to pituitary surgery for a select group of clinically nonfunctioning macroadenomas and to compare results of this approach with the sublabial transseptal approach at a single institution. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 26 patients with clinically nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas approached endoscopically and 44 matched control patients with the same tumors approached sublabially between January 1, 1995, and October 31, 1997. RESULTS: At baseline, the groups were

Lip, oral and oropharyngeal cancer incidence among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples: First report from Australian population-based cancer registry, 1999-2018.

BACKGROUND: The Australian Burden of Disease Study has shown that cancer is the single most important entity responsible for the greatest cause of health burden in Australia. Unfortunately, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experience a greater burden of this disease, with cancer of the lung, breast, bowel and prostrate being the most common. Lip, oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer incidence is rapidly rising globally and is now the sixth most common cancer in Australia. This paper aims to summarize, for the first time, the incidence and prevalence trends of lip, oral cavity and pha

Collision of desmoplastic-neurotropic melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma on the lip.

We report on a case of the collision of a desmoplastic-neurotropic melanoma and a squamous cell carcinoma on the lip. A 46-year-old male developed a multifocal infiltrative squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip, which also showed sparse melanocyte atypia within the epidermis and an extensive spindle cell proliferation within the dermis, subcutaneous tissues and nerves. An immunohistochemical panel showed that the spindle cells were melanocytes, not derived from the squamous cell carcinoma. Double labeling with AE1/AE3 and S100 showed striking localized proximity of the spindle-cell melanocy

A case report of Merkel cell carcinoma on chronic lymphocytic leukemia: differential diagnosis of coexisting lymphadenopathy and indications for early aggressive treatment.

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a monoclonal disorder, characterized by a progressive proliferation of functionally incompetent B lymphocytes. There is increased evidence of association between CLL and skin cancers, including the uncommon Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). CASE PRESENTATION: A case report of an 84-year old male, who presented with an aggressively recurrent form of MCC on the lower lip, on the background of an 8-year history of untreated CLL. During the recurrences of MCC, coexisting regional lymphadenopathy, posed a problem in the differential diagnosis and treatm

High dose rate brachytherapy for lip cancer with interstitial, surface, or a combination of interstitial and surface mold technique.

PURPOSE: High-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) is now becoming more common than low-dose-rate and pulsed-dose-rate BT in the treatment of lip cancer. However, due to the limited history of HDR-BT, relatively few studies have been published. Two institutions (in Ukraine and the USA) reviewed their clinical outcomes of lip cancer patients treated with HDR-BT as monotherapy or in combination with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). METHODS AND MATERIALS: An interstitial (IS), surface custom mold (SC), or a combination of IS and SC (IS+SC) was used for treatments based on the depth of tumor invasi

Reconstruction of Large Defects of the Lower Lip After Mohs Surgery: The Use of Combined Karapandzic and Abbe Flaps.

INTRODUCTION: Lower lip reconstruction should restore oral competence, speech, and cosmesis. These goals are a challenge when reparing large lower lip defects. Karapandzic flap is a reliable technique with consistent functional and esthetic outcome. In large defects, it might result in disproportion between the upper and lower lips and blunting of the commissures. The Abbe flap is useful as a lip balancing procedure and avoids the rounding of the commissures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five cases of lower lip skin cancer treated with Mohs surgery with defects up to 80% were reconstructed with a co

An unusual complication of nasolabial flap reconstruction.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common carcinoma in the oral cavity. Resection of these cancers often requires reconstruction. Nasolabial flaps are a robust and reliable local flap that provide a satisfactory outcome. We report two cases where an epidermoid cyst developed within the scar of the nasolabial flap and review the literature.

Oropharyngeal hairy polyp with meningothelial elements.

The so-called hairy or teratoid polyp is a rare lesion of bigerminal origin that comprises elements derived from both ectodermal and mesodermal cell lines. In this article we report the presence of meningothelial elements in a hairy polyp, a previously undescribed component of this entity. The lesion was characterized by a pedunculated outgrowth from the hard palate. The surface of the outgrowth was covered by squamous epithelium and a central core of fibroadipose tissue, pilosebaceous glands, cleftlike pseudovascular spaces, and groups of epithelioid cells. These reticulated and cellular foci

Actinic cheilitis and carcinoma of the lip.

During dental examinations, the lips are readily overlooked. Dentists should routinely examine the lips visually and by palpation. Actinic cheilitis is a common condition caused by damage to the lips through exposure to sunlight, and is readily diagnosed clinically. Its progress can be minimized by the use of an appropriate sun screen when outdoors. Actinic cheilitis can undergo malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma. The clinical features and management of these conditions are described.

[Carcinoma of the lip: a retrospective study of 86 cases].

Carcinoma of the lip is a common lesion which is not always acknowledged as as a potentially lethal disease. The risk of cancer occurs most commonly among aging white men. The risk factors normally associated with lip cancer are rural residence and outdoor occupation. In addition, both actinic radiation and tobacco smoking have been considered casually related to lip cancer. The present study is based on a retrospective review of 86 patients (82 males, 4 females, mean age 65) affected by carcinoma of the lip, treated in Florence from 1970 to 1988. The most frequent site for carcinoma of the li

Abnormalities of chromosome 22 in pediatric meningiomas.

Cytogenetic studies of eight meningiomas in young children or adolescents were performed. Two tumors exhibited normal karyotypes. Two tumors from patients with bilateral acoustic neurofibromatosis demonstrated monosomy 22 as the only abnormality. Four patients had more complicated karyotypes in which one or both of the chromosomes 22 were missing or structurally altered. The most common secondary changes in these four tumors involved monosomy or structural abnormalities of chromosome 6. These findings confirm that the primary cytogenetic changes in meningioma are similar in children and adults

Primary malignant melanoma of the oral mucosa.

PURPOSE: To present our experience on the epidemiology, clinical features, management, and survival of patients with oral malignant melanoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of patients with a histologic diagnosis of primary oral mucosal malignant melanoma seen over a 23-year period were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: There were 6 females and 2 males, ranging in age from 18 to 60 years; 4 cases in the maxilla, 2 in the mandible, 1 on the lower lip, and 1 on the buccal mucosa. Local recurrences developed in 2 patients who eventually died with clinical metastatic cervical nodal disease. Foll
