Double contrast-enhanced MRI of viral hepatitis-induced cirrhosis: correlation of gross morphological signs with hepatic fibrosis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic ability of the expanded gallbladder fossa and right posterior hepatic notch signs for hepatic fibrosis determined by double contrast-enhanced MRI. For patients with chronic viral hepatitis B (n = 96) or hepatitis C (n = 13) who underwent gadopentate dimeglumine-enhanced dynamic MRI followed by ferucarbotran-enhanced gradient-echo imaging, the degree of parenchymal fibrosis was categorised into three groups based on the extent of reticulation and nodularity: (1) pre-cirrhotic or minimal fibrosis; (2) mild to moderate fibrosis; (3) advance

Apoptosis-Inducing Effect of Cytocompatible Poly(Acrylic Acid)-Coated Temperature-Sensitive Mn0.9Zn0.1Fe2O4 Magnetic Fluid on Breast Cancer Cells MCF-7.

Cancer remains a challenging disease to treat due to the limitations of conventional therapies, including toxicity to healthy cells and drug resistance. This underscores the need for alternative treatment modalities to target tumors more effectively while minimizing side effects. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have emerged as promising agents in the realm of cancer therapy, particularly through magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH), which employs MNPs to generate localized heat in tumor tissues using an alternating magnetic field (AMF), while sparing healthy cells. This present study focused on the

Active targeted delivery of theranostic thermo/pH dual-responsive magnetic Janus nanoparticles functionalized with folic acid/fluorescein ligands for enhanced DOX combination therapy of rat glioblastoma.

Doxorubicin (DOX), a chemotherapy drug, has demonstrated limited efficacy against glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor with resistance attributed to the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This study aims to overcome this challenge by proposing the targeted delivery of magnetic Janus nanoparticles (MJNPs) functionalized with folic acid ligands, fluorescent dye, and doxorubicin (DOX/MJNPs-FLA). The properties of these nanoparticles were comprehensively evaluated using bio-physiochemical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential a

Immunological Responses to Transgene-Modified Neural Stem Cells After Transplantation.

Neural stem cell (NSC) therapy is a promising therapeutic strategy for stroke. Researchers have frequently carried out genetic modification or gene editing of stem cells to improve survival or therapeutic function. However, NSC transplantation carries the risk of immune rejection, and genetic modification or gene-editing might further increase this risk. For instance, recent studies have reported on manipulating the stem cell genome and transplantation via the insertion of an exogenous gene derived from magnetotactic bacteria. However, whether transgene-modified stem cells are capable of induc

Emerging techniques in atherosclerosis imaging.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic immunomodulated disease that affects multiple vascular beds and results in a significant worldwide disease burden. Conventional imaging modalities focus on the morphological features of atherosclerotic disease such as the degree of stenosis caused by a lesion. Modern CT, MR and positron emission tomography scanners have seen significant improvements in the rapidity of image acquisition and spatial resolution. This has increased the scope for the clinical application of these modalities. Multimodality imaging can improve cardiovascular risk prediction by informing o

Iron oxide nanoparticles for use as an MRI contrast agent: pharmacokinetics and metabolism.

The pharmacokinetics and metabolism of a new preparation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were evaluated by 59Fe radiotracer studies and histologic examination of mice liver and spleen tissues (light and transmission electron microscopy). In the first 30 min following IV injection of the product half of the dose injected remains in the blood, the other part being sequestered mainly by the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS). In the first five days following IV administration of the nanoparticles, early metabolization of the iron oxide cores occurs, revealed by modification of their

Hyperthermia generated by magnetic nanoparticles for effective treatment of disseminated peritoneal cancer in an orthotopic nude-mouse model.

Magnetic hyperthermia (MHT), which combines magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with an alternating magnetic field (AMF), holds promise as a cancer therapy. There have been many studies about hyperthermia, most of which have been performed by direct injection of MNPs into tumor tissues. However, there have been no reports of treating peritoneal disseminated disease with MHT to date. In the present study, we treated peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer with MHT using superparamagnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticle (SPION) coated with carboxydextran as an MNP, in an orthotopic mouse model mimicki

Interaction between natural magnetite sub-micrometric particles and the Fasciola hepatica egg: The role of the exposed surface area.

Fasciolosis is a zoonotic world widely distributed disease caused by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, which affects animals and occasionally humans. On the other hand, natural iron oxide particles like magnetite are commonly found in soils where they participate in a wide range of environmental processes like organic matter decomposition, the adsorption of ions and molecules, and chemical reactions that involve the participation of soil living microorganisms. Since Fasciola eggs become soil components after being released with the infected animal faeces, this study focused on the characteriz

A Rapid Method for the Detection of Sarcosine Using SPIONs/Au/CS/SOX/NPs for Prostate Cancer Sensing.

Sarcosine is an amino acid that is formed by methylation of glycine and is present in trace amounts in the body. Increased sarcosine concentrations in blood plasma and urine are manifested in sarcosinemia and in some other diseases such as prostate cancer. For this purpose, sarcosine detection using the nanomedicine approach was proposed. In this study, we have prepared superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with different modified surface area. Nanoparticles (NPs) were modified by chitosan (CS), and sarcosine oxidase (SOX). SPIONs without any modification were taken as controls.

Biocompatible graphene-based nanoagent with NIR and magnetism dual-responses for effective bacterial killing and removal.

Antibiotics have been widely used in clinical applications to treat pathogenic infections at present, but the problem of drug-resistance associated with the abuse of antibiotics has become a large threat to human beings. Herein, we developed an antibacterial nanoagent by coating quaternized chitosan (QCS) on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles-anchored graphene oxide (GO), which enabled QCS and GO to achieve synergistic effects on killing the drug-resistant bacteria. Systematical antibacterial experiments showed that the prepared nanoagent had antibacterial ability, which was significantly enha

Asialoglycoprotein receptor-magnetic dual targeting nanoparticles for delivery of RASSF1A to hepatocellular carcinoma.

We developed a nanovector with double targeting properties for efficiently delivering the tumor suppressor gene RASSF1A specifically into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells by preparing galactosylated-carboxymethyl chitosan-magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Gal-CMCS-Fe3O4-NPs). After conjugating galactose and CMCS to the surface of Fe3O4-NPs, we observed that Gal-CMCS-Fe3O4-NPs were round with a relatively stable zeta potential of +6.5 mV and an mean hydrodynamic size of 40.1 ± 5.3 nm. Gal-CMCS-Fe3O4-NPs had strong DNA condensing power in pH 7 solution and were largely nontoxic. In vitro ex

Examining efficacy of "TAT-less" delivery of a peptide against the L-type calcium channel in cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Increased calcium influx through the L-type Ca(2+) channel or overexpression of the alpha subunit of the channel induces cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiac hypertrophy results from increased oxidative stress and alterations in cell calcium levels following ischemia-reperfusion injury and is an independent risk factor for increased morbidity and mortality. We find that decreasing the movement of the auxiliary beta subunit with a peptide derived against the alpha-interacting domain (AID) of the channel attenuates ischemia-reperfusion injury. We compared the efficacy of delivering the AID peptide using

Cold plasma triggered cell death with a curcumin and capecitabine loaded magnetic nanocluster-based multifunctional system on the MCF-7 cell line: a smart therapy platform.

The development of smart, selective, and multifunctional nanotherapeutics is crucial for advancing next-generation cancer treatments. In this study, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoclusters (SPIONCs) were coated with mesoporous silica, functionalized with folic acid (FA), and co-loaded with curcumin (CUR) and capecitabine (CAPE) to create a novel nanocarrier system. To enhance cellular internalisation, magnetophoresis was applied before exposure of the cells to cold atmospheric plasma (CAP). The resulting FA-conjugated, CUR and CAPE-loaded nanoclusters were evaluated in vitro in MCF-7 breast

Cetuximab-Coated Thermo-Sensitive Liposomes Loaded with Magnetic Nanoparticles and Doxorubicin for Targeted EGFR-Expressing Breast Cancer Combined Therapy.

BACKGROUND: One major limitation of cancer chemotherapy is a failure to specifically target a tumor, potentially leading to side effects such as systemic cytotoxicity. In this case, we have generated a cancer cell-targeting nanoparticle-liposome drug delivery system that can be activated by near-infrared laser light to enable local photo-thermal therapy and the release of chemotherapeutic agents, which could achieve combined therapeutic efficiency. METHODS: To exploit the magnetic potential of iron oxide, we prepared and characterized citric acid-coated iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (CMNP
