Third molar agenesis as a potential marker for craniofacial deformities.

UNLABELLED: The identification of clinical patterns of tooth agenesis in individuals born with craniofacial deformities may be a useful tool for risk determination of these defects. We hypothesize that specific craniofacial deformities are associated with third molar agenesis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify if third molar agenesis could have a relation with other craniofacial structure alterations, such as cleft lip and palate, skeletal malocclusion, or specific growth patterns in humans. DESIGN: Data were obtained from 550 individuals ascertained as part of studies aiming

Dental asymmetry in temporomandibular disorders.

In our previous study, it was reported that facial asymmetry due to mandibular lateral displacement (MLD) was significant in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). In this study, dental asymmetry in TMD patients was investigated by means of PA cephalogram and study model. Lateral deviation of the midline of the mandibular occlusal table (PA-mid) and right-left difference of the molar relationship (Molar-Diff.) were examined, and their relationship with MLD was studied. PA-mid and Molar-Diff. were significantly correlated with MLD. In most cases, displaced side of the midline of the l

Synergistic benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for postoperative palatal oro-nasal fistula following segmental Le Fort 1 osteotomy.

Segmental maxillary osteotomy, a surgical technique used in orthognathic surgery, involves the risk of palatal mucosa tearing, which can lead to severe complications. Herein, we report the case of a woman with Angle class II malocclusion who underwent multiple elective segmental maxillary osteotomy and augmentation genioplasty procedures for the correction of her malocclusion and the enhancement of her facial profile. A week after surgery, the patient developed a palatal ulcer. We adopted a comprehensive treatment approach involving 14-day hyperbaric oxygen therapy and conventional modalities;

Orthodontic treatment of acquired open bite accompanied with extreme mesially inclined mandibular molars.

Acquired open bite mainly occurs after adolescence and is caused by a pathological or biological process. We herein report the case of an 18-year and 10-month-old Japanese woman. Her chief complaint was difficulty with mastication. Only distal cusps of first molars and second molars had contact. An angle class II molar relationship and extreme mesially inclined mandibular first molars were observed. The degree of overjet was +6.1mm and overbite was -2.0mm. There were no symptoms or abnormal findings in temporomandibular joints by radiography and magnetic resonance imaging. A skeletal class II

Dentoskeletal effects of aesthetic and conventional twin block appliances in the treatment of skeletal class II malocclusion: a randomized controlled trial.

Twin block appliances are commonly used to treat skeletal class II malocclusion. However, many adverse effects, such as lower incisor protrusion and a bulky nature, can be observed. To overcome these effects, a modified twin block was designed, which uses vacuum-formed hard plates (VFPs) instead of acrylic plates. This clinical trial evaluated the skeletal and dentoalveolar changes resulting from a modified twin block (aesthetic twin block) (ATB) in comparison with conventional twin block (CTB) in addition to levels of esthetics and discomfort. A two-arm parallel group randomized clinical tria
