Maternal exposure to dioxin imprints sexual immaturity of the pups through fixing the status of the reduced expression of hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone.

Our previous studies have shown that treatment of pregnant rats with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD; 1 μg/kg) at gestational day … ession of GnRH, as well as from the defects in sexual behavior. These results strongly suggest that maternal exposure to TCDD fixes the status of the lowered expression of GnRH in the offspring by reducing the LH-assisted steroidogenesis at the perinatal stage, and this mechanism imprints defects in sexual behaviors at adulthood.

Maternal-fetal HLA sharing and preeclampsia: variation in effects by seminal fluid exposure in a case-control study of nulliparous women in Iowa.

Whereas histocompatibility is critical for transplantation, HLA histoincompatibility is associated with successful pregnancy. Literature on HLA sharing and preeclampsia has been inconsistent; most studies focused on maternal-paternal rather than maternal-fetal sharing. This study examines whether maternal-fetal histocompatibility is associated with preeclampsia, and whether effects vary by semen exposure history. This case-control study of nulliparous women was designed to examine associations among HLA sharing, semen exposure, and preeclampsia. 258 preeclampsia cases and 182 normotensive cont

Maternal posttraumatic stress disorder and depression in pediatric primary care: association with child maltreatment and frequency of child exposure to traumatic events.

IMPORTANCE: Maternal posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be associated with increased risk for child maltreatment and child exposure to traumatic events. Exposure to multiple traumatic events is associated with a wide range of adverse health and social outcomes in children. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of probable maternal depression, PTSD, and comorbid PTSD and depression with the risk for child maltreatment and parenting stress and with the number of traumatic events to which preschool children are exposed. DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational design. We used analysis of var

Evaluating the effects of maternal exposure to benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene on oral clefts among offspring in Texas: 1999-2008.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence from previous studies that maternal occupational exposure to hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) is positively ass … sidence during pregnancy. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between estimated maternal exposure to each pollutant (BTEX) separately and the risk of oral clefts in offspring. RESULTS: High estimated maternal exposure to benzene was not associated with oral clefts, compared with low estimated exposure (CL ± P adjusted OR = 0.95; 95% CI = 0.81 - …

Maternal hair testing for the assessment of fetal exposure to drug of abuse during early pregnancy: Comparison with testing in placental and fetal remains.

UNLABELLED: Drug use by pregnant women in the first trimester of pregnancy and subsequent fetal exposure during early gestation can be assessed only by repetitive/systematic maternal blood/urine analysis or segmental hair analysis. No evidence of any relationship between maternal/fetal exposure during this specific period of gestation has been demonstrated to date in a human model. METHODS: To clarify drugs toxicokinetics and transplacental passage during early pregnancy, the presence of the most widely used recreational drugs of abuse and metabolites was investigated in the proximal 4cm hair

Maternal exposure to procymidone has no effects on fetal external genitalia development in male rabbit fetuses in a modified developmental toxicity study.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of procymidone (PCM) on development of male rabbit fetal external genitalia. PCM was administered once daily by gavage at dose levels of 0 (control) and 125mg/kg/day to pregnant rabbits from gestation day 6 through 28 and fetal external genitalia was observed in detail. This treatment period covered the critical stage of sexual differentiation of fetal external genitalia in rabbits. In the maternal animals, food consumption was reduced in the PCM group. There were no effects of PCM on maternal caesarean sectioning data or fetal external observat

Maternal body mass index and lifestyle exposures and the risk of bilateral renal agenesis or hypoplasia: the National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

Increased maternal body mass index, maternal smoking, and alcohol exposure during pregnancy have been inconsistently reported as potential risk factors for renal birth defects. The low incidence of the most severe renal anomaly, bilateral renal agenesis or hypoplasia (RA/H), has limited the ability to study this fatal defect. Using data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a multicenter case-control study, the authors explored potential relations between RA/H and maternal body mass index, smoking, alcohol, and caffeine exposures. Data available for 75 infants with RA/H born betwee

Maternal intestinal dysbiosis mediated by sevoflurane exposure during pregnancy leads to altered gut microbiota and metabolites and cognitive dysfunction in the offspring.

Prenatal exposure to anesthetic drugs, such as sevoflurane, may exert a long-lasting impact on neurological function in the offspring. This study aims to investigate the consequence of prenatal sevoflurane exposure on cognitive function in offspring mice. C57BL/6 J mice of 2-3 months of age were housed under standard environmental conditions. Pregnant mice were randomly assigned to receive either sevoflurane exposure or to serve as control group. Behavioral tests conducted included the novel object recognition test and the Morris water maze test. During the terminal phase of the experiment, fe

Change in maternal harshness and home environment across early childhood as predictors of autonomic regulation in adolescence in the context of prenatal substance exposure.

Using the Dimensional Model of Psychopathology as our theoretical framework, we investigated whether developmental patterns of maternal harshness and quality of the home environment predicted autonomic regulation in a high-risk sample of adolescents. Maternal harshness was assessed at 5-points (infancy-preschool), quality of the caregiving environment was assessed at 3-points (early school age) and autonomic regulation during a social stressor was assessed during early adolescence in 203 mother-child dyads. Quality of the home environment increased over time whereas maternal harshness increase

Associations of arsenic exposure and folate in maternal leukocyte DNA methylation: a case-control study of mothers with spina-bifida affected children.

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh, more than a quarter of drinking water tubewells are contaminated with arsenic above the national standard (50 µg/l), while nearly half exceed the World Health Organization guideline (10 µg/l). Among other negative health consequences, arsenic is a suspected environmental risk factor for neural tube defects (NTDs), including spina bifida. Maternal folate status protects against NTDs, though recent evidence suggests arsenic attenuates folate’s protective effects. Arsenic is methylated prior to excretion with methyl groups produced in one-carbon metabolism, for which fo

Maternal Exposure to 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol During Pregnancy in a Mouse Model Leads to Abnormal Development of the Urinary System in Offspring.

The occurrence of congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) is influenced by intrauterine environmental factors, and maternal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during pregnancy may affect the kidney development of offspring. 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP) is a high-production volume chemical classified as an EDC, which has been detected in humans and has been found to increase mortality and malformation rates in zebrafish embryos. Its effects on mammalian development are still unknown. In this study, a maternal mouse model exposed to 2,4-DTBP throughout p…

Maternal serum and placental metabolomes in association with prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and their relevance to child neurodevelopment in an ASD-enriched cohort.

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been linked to altered neurodevelopment in children, but the contribution of maternal metabolic disruption to this relationship remains unclear. We investigated associations between prenatal PFAS exposure, maternal metabolism, and child neurodevelopment. We analyzed 172 mother-child pairs from the MARBLES (Markers of Autism Risk in Babies-Learning Early Signs) cohort. Nine PFAS were measured in maternal serum collected during pregnancy. Metabolites were quantified in third-trimester serum and placental tissue using proton nucl

Development of a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method for the evaluation of maternal-fetal exposure to cocaine employing human umbilical cord tissue.

Illicit drug use is a serious and complex public health problem, not only due to the severity of the health damage but also to the social implications, such as marginalization and drug trafficking. Currently, cocaine (COC) is among the most abused drugs worldwide with about 22 million users. Drug abuse has also been found in women during the pregnancy period, which has shed light on a new group for epidemiology. The diagnosis of COC use in these cases usually depends largely on the mother's reports, which in several cases omit or deny consumption. Therefore, considering physical-chemical metho

Effects of maternal exposure to biomass cooking fuel on birth size and body proportionality in full-term infants born by vaginal delivery.

It remains unclear whether and how maternal exposure to biomass fuel influences infant anthropometry or body proportionality at birth, which are linked to their survival, physical growth, and neurodevelopment. Therefore, this study seeks to explore the association between household-level exposure to biomass cooking fuels and infant size and body proportionality at birth among women in rural Bangladesh. A total of 909 women were derived from the Pregnancy Weight Gain study, which was conducted in Matlab, a rural area of Bangladesh. Infant's weight (g), length (cm), head circumference (cm), smal…

Prenatal Exposure to Air Pollution and Pre-Labor Rupture of Membranes in a Prospective Cohort Study: The Role of Maternal Hemoglobin and Iron Supplementation.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution in prenatal period is associated with prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM). However, the sensitive exposure time windows and the possible biological mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify the sensitive time windows of exposure to air pollution for PROM risk. Further, we examined whether maternal hemoglobin levels mediate the association between exposure to air pollution and PROM, as well as investigated the potential effect of iron supplementation on this association. METHOD: From 2015 to 2021, 6,824 mother

Maternal exposure to housing renovation during the periconceptional period and the risk of offspring with isolated congenital heart disease: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most prevalent birth defect in recent decades. The aim of this research was to examine the … regression models. RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounding variables, it was found that maternal exposure to home improvement projects was associated with a higher probability of isolated CHD in offspring (adjusted OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.34, 2.33). Additionally, the risk of the ventricular septal defect (VSD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) for CHD type …

Association Between Estimated Geocoded Residential Maternal Exposure to Lithium in Drinking Water and Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder in Offspring in Denmark.

IMPORTANCE: Lithium is a naturally occurring and trace element that has mood-stabilizing effects. Maternal therapeutic use of lithium has been associated with adverse birth outcomes. In animal models, lithium modulates Wnt/β-catenin signaling that is important for neurodevelopment. It is unknown whether exposure to lithium in drinking water affects brain health in early life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring is associated with maternal exposure to lithium in drinking water during pregnancy. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nationwide populatio…

Maternal use of hormonal contraception and risk of childhood autism spectrum disorders: A Parental Exposures and Child Health (PECH) cohort study.

A recent hypothesis suggests that maternal hormonal contraception use has contributed to the increasing incidence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We used a nationwide population-based cohort (the PECH cohort) including 1,056,149 Danish children born in the period January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2014, to assess associations between maternal hormonal contraception use and childhood ASD (end of follow-up: December 31, 2017). Maternal hormonal contraception use was grouped as "recent use" (≤ 3 months before pregnancy start or during pregnancy), "previous use" (>3 months before pregnancy start

Pregestational Exposure to T. gondii Produces Maternal Antibodies That Recognize Fetal Brain Mimotopes and Induces Neurochemical and Behavioral Dysfunction in the Offspring.

The activation of the maternal immune system by a prenatal infection is considered a risk factor for developing psychiatric disorders in the offspring. Toxoplasma gondii is one of the pathogenic infections associated with schizophrenia. Recent studies have shown an association between high levels of IgG anti-T. gondii from mothers and their neonates, with a higher risk of developing schizophrenia. The absence of the parasite and the levels of IgGs found in the early stages of life suggest a transplacental transfer of the anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies, which could bind fetal brain structures by
