Bone grafting has become an essential part of implant dentistry. Thanks to the advancement of grafting technology, areas that could only be managed with removable dentures or teeth-supported fixed prostheses can now be successfully treated with implant-supported prosthesis. Nonetheless, the complications associated with bone grafting procedures have slowly emerged to be one of the main challenges to many clinicians. A Medline literature search of articles published from 1984 to 2006 related to advanced bone grafting complications were selected and analyzed. To make it easier to understand, imp

Despite documented ecomorphological shifts toward an herbivorous diet in several coelurosaurian lineages, the evolutionary tempo and mode of these changes remain poorly understood, hampered by sparse cranial materials for early representatives of major clades. This is particularly true for Therizinosauria, with representative crania best known for the late-diverging Erlikosaurus andrewsi and the early taxon Jianchangosaurus yixianensis. Here we describe a series of new cranial bones of Falcarius utahensis, the geologically oldest therizinosaurian from the Early Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Format

BACKGROUND: Giant cell reparative granulomas are nonneoplastic, benign lesions that can expand and dissolve bone. Fibrous dysplasia is a benign condition in which normal bone tissue is replaced by abnormally proliferating immature reticular bone and fibrous tissue. The combination of giant cell reparative granuloma and fibrous dysplasia is extremely rare and can pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because of the complexity of clinical presentation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We here present a patient who had a combination of fibrous dysplasia of bone and a giant cell reparative granuloma. An e

Knowledge of the nonhuman primate morphology and anatomy related to craniofacial mechanoreception is essential for a fundamental understanding of the incidents that have occurred during the evolution of craniofacial features. The present study focuses on the variability in the number of infraorbital foramina and associated anatomical structures such as the infraorbital canal (IOC) and the infraorbital groove (IOG), as they are considered to play an important role in the behavioral ecology of these animals. A total of 19 skulls of Chlorocebus aethiops were analyzed. The number of infraorbital f

BACKGROUND: Current approaches for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy may result in suboptimal seizure control and cognitive decline. An incomplete treatment of the epileptogenic zone and unnecessary violation of functional cortical and subcortical areas may contribute to suboptimal results.
OBJECTIVE: To describe and test the anatomic feasibility of a novel endoscopic anterior transmaxillary (ATM) approach to the temporal lobe and to compare the described technique to other transfacial approaches.
METHODS: Twenty-four cadaveric brain hemispheres fixed in formalin were used to study anterior temp

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma (JTOF) is a rare variant of ossifying fibroma. Though it is benign, it has aggressive clinical behavior. JTOF may pose diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties due to their clinical, radiological and histological variability. Herein, we describe our experience in encountering this unusual disease entity in terms diagnostics as well as surgical procedure and the differential diagnoses to be considered.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year old female child presented to our facility because of a rapidly growing right maxillary swelling. C

BACKGROUND: Leprosy can be considered to be the most common peripheral neuropathy of infectious etiology and constitutes a public health problem. The standard routine examination for assessing sensory impairment in leprosy neuropathy basically evaluates hands, feet and eyes. However, evaluation of facial cutaneous sensation is not routinely performed.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate facial cutaneous sensation in patients with different clinical forms of leprosy and compare the findings with those from healthy individuals.
METHODOLOGY: 19 healthy controls and 71 leprosy pati

PURPOSE: Reduction malarplasty is one of the most common esthetic surgical procedures performed in the Asian population. Traditional procedures have several complications, such as bone nonunion, malunion, cheek drooping, and damage to the infraorbital nerve and maxillary sinus. Therefore, a more straightforward and effective method of reducing the width of the midface is needed. In this study, we introduce an infracture technique using inward displacement of the zygomatic arch without fixation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 680 patients received zygoma reduction using our method from 2012

OBJECTIVE: Malocclusion with deep overbite and facial esthetics improve when facial height is intentionally increased during orthodontic extrusion of the posterior teeth. Thus, a better understanding of post-treatment stability of increased occlusal vertical dimension (iOVD) in adult patients is important. We focused on the jaw-opening reflex (JOR), which plays an important role in the control of jaw movements during mastication, and investigated the effects of iOVD on the JOR in rats with an electrophysiological technique.
DESIGN: One hundred and twenty 13-week-old male Wistar rats were rand

Carotid body tumors (paragangliomas) arise from chemoreceptors located at the carotid bifurcation. In imaging studies, this neoplasm may be confused with other neck neoplasms such as thyroid carcinoma. The purpose of this retrospective, cross-sectional study was to describe computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of confirmed carotid body tumors in a multi-institutional sample of dogs. A total of 16 dogs met inclusion criteria (14 examined using CT and two with MRI). The most common reason for imaging was a palpable cervical mass or respiratory signs (i.e

OBJECTIVE: A previous cross-sectional investigation showed that the mandibular foramen location depends on the age and the vertical facial pattern of growing individuals. The aim of the present longitudinal study was to explain how these factors influence the distance between the foramen and the occlusal plane. It is known that a certain distance is necessary for a successful inferior alveolar nerve block in clinical dentistry.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This distance, as well as another four cephalometric variables, were measured on both pre-treatment and 10-year post-treatment lateral cephalome

PURPOSE: To present a novel orthodontic approach for minimally invasive extraction of impacted mandibular third molars (M3s) close to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight patients (8 M3s) requiring extraction of M3s were included in this study; there were 2 cases of horizontal impaction, 4 of mesioangular impaction, and 2 of vertical impaction. Cone-beam computed tomogram showed that the roots of impacted M3s in 2 cases interrupted the cortices of the mandibular canal, and those in the other 6 cases were very close to the IAN. Orthodontic treatment was performed in t

BACKGROUND: Advances in microsurgery and immunosuppression have allowed for facial reconstruction at a qualitatively new level with facial composite tissue allografts. Although donor tissue recovery is unique for each patient, transplantation of the maxilla and overlying soft tissues will be a frequent indication. Vascularity of the maxilla and palate, supplied by facial arteries alone, has been a concern. Based on cadaver dissections and a clinical case, vascular considerations for transplantation of the entire midface are discussed.
METHODS: To prepare for central facial transplantation in

In the last two decades, the anterolateral thigh flap has emerged as one of the most popular reconstructive options for multiple body sites. Based on a perforator flap harvest concept, the flap encompasses the advantages of versatility, pliability, and potential for composite tissue replacement. Although numerous anatomical variations exist, these are well-described, and flap safety remains uncompromised if certain anatomical boundaries are respected. Careful preoperative planning and identification of perforators remain the cornerstone of successful flap harvest. Once perforators are identifi

BACKGROUND: Graves' ophthalmopathy is a chronic, multisystem disorder characterized by increased intraorbital fat tissue and hypertrophic extraocular muscles caused by an autoimmune process. Graves' ophthalmopathy represents the most frequent extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease. Clinical findings are impaired ocular motility, diplopia, lid retraction, and impaired visual acuity up to optic neuropathy, with menacing blindness.
METHODS: Transpalpebral decompression by intraorbital fat removal was first described by Olivari in 1988. From 1984 to 2004, a consecutive series of 1635 pat

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession has a multifactorial etiology, involving various predisposing and precipitating factors. Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are often associated with gingival recession and pose challenges due to their complex pathodynamics. There is limited evidence regarding tunnel-based procedures combined with connective tissue grafts (CTGs) for treating recession-associated NCCLs. This case study illustrates a periodontal-restorative approach for addressing multiple adjacent recession-associated NCCLs.
METHODS: A healthy, non-smoking 55-year-old Asian male presented with

Raeder syndrome (paratrigeminal oculosympathetic syndrome) is a rare clinical entity characterized by ipsilateral trigeminal sensory deficits, ptosis, and miosis, with an absence of anhidrosis secondary to interruption of the postganglionic oculosympathetic pathway. Going back to its original description, this constellation of physical examination findings has historically been associated with intracranial pathology involving the middle cranial fossa. Understanding this pathway is important in distinguishing Raeder syndrome from Horner syndrome, as the presentation of the former is now recogni
