A Clinical Study of Maxillary Sinus Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

We report a retrospective study of 26 patients with maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma who were treated at the Sapporo Medical University between January 2002 and December 2008. The 5-year local control rate was 85.7% in patients with stage T2-3 disease and 61.0% in patients with stage T4a disease. The overall 5-year survival rate was 71.3% and the 5-year disease-specific survival rate was 79.9%. The 5-year disease-specific survival rate was 100% in patients with T2-3 disease and 44.4% in patients with T4 disease. The 5-year disease-specific survival rate was 76.3% in patients with N0 dis

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the facial bone.

The epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is an uncommon vascular neoplasm. Numerous sites of involvement are possible, but these tumors most commonly arise in the soft tissues, liver, and lung. We report a case of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma presenting as a single lesion on the nasal portion of the maxilla. Histologically, the tumor within bone and skin exhibited cords and nests of plump, epithelioid-appearing cells exhibiting rudimentary vascular differentiation within a myxohyaline stroma. Immunohistochemical reactivities for factor VIII-related antigen, CD31, CD34, and vimentin were demons

Enophthalmos: a clinical review.

Twenty-six cases of enophthalmos were reviewed. The causes in order of frequency were: orbital asymmetry (8); trauma (5); orbital metastasis (4); microphthalmos (2); orbital varix (2); maxillary mucocele (2); localized scleroderma (1); absence of sphenoid wing (neurofibromatosis) (1); post irradiation atrophy (1). Only six of the patients (23%) were referred with the diagnosis of enophthalmos, suggesting the sign maybe subtle and is frequently missed or misdiagnosed. The nature of the causes underscore the need for careful and thorough diagnosis. In particular, the therapeutic implications of

Radical Exenteration of the Skull Base for End-Stage, Locally Advanced Sinonasal Malignancies: Challenging the Dictum of Unresectability.

BACKGROUND: The role of surgery is not well defined in locally advanced sinonasal cancers with intracranial involvement after all medical options have been exhausted. We hypothesize that patients whose tumors are deemed unresectable and referred to palliative care may benefit from radical salvage surgery. METHODS: We performed a single-center retrospective review of patients with malignant, locally advanced (stage T4b) sinonasal cancers with intracranial involvement from 2000 to 2020, inclusive. Data were collected on the patient demographics, details of chemotherapy, radiation, histology, pe

Establishment and characterization of an orthotopic sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Despite therapeutic improvements, patients with sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) still face an unfavorable prognosis and there is great need for alternative treatments. METHODS: SCCNC4 cells, originally derived from a T2N1M0 primary and untreated sinonasal SCC, were inoculated in the maxillary sinus of immunodeficient mice. Histology, invasive behavior, and genetic features were evaluated and compared with the original primary tumor. RESULTS: The mice developed tumors that invaded bone, surrounding tissues, and brain, showing the same poor differentiation as the original p

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of head and neck. A 5-year retrospective study: Experience in a single third-level reference center.

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare tumor, with an annual incidence of 3-4.5 cases/million. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive and retrospective study. We included patients diagnosed with ACC of head and neck of a single third-level referral center, from January 2008 to December 2013. RESULTS: A total of 23 patients were included in the study, 10 males (43.5%) and 13 females (56.5%) (F:M ratio 1.3:1). Median age was 52 years. Localization was predominantly observed in the oral cavity (26%) followed by the palate (17.4%). At presentation, 15 patients (65.2%)

[Clinical analysis of 60 cases with maxillary squamous cell carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical characters, treatment modalities and prognosis of patients with maxillary squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: The clinical data of 60 patients with maxillary squamous cell carcinoma treatment between January 1994 and December 2004 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were treated with three therapy modalities including radiotherapy alone (22 cases), radiotherapy and surgery (R + S, 29 cases) and concurrent chemo-radio-therapy adjuvant surgery (CCR + S, 9 cases). RESULTS: The five year survival rate were 18.2%, 51.7% and 33.3% for patients in the radiothe

Is it necessary to use the angular artery to feed the scapular tip when preparing a latissimus dorsi osteomyocutaneous flap?: case report.

This report demonstrates the possibility of elevation of the scapular tip with the latissimus dorsi muscle based on the thoracodorsal artery only, when an additional and substantial amount of bone is required for complex reconstruction. The patient was a 37-year-old man who developed an epidermoid carcinoma arising from the left maxillary sinus. After wide excision and radical resection of the tumor and the invaded structures, an osteomyocutaneous latissimus dorsi flap was prepared. With the muscle, the 12th rib was included in the flap to reconstruct the orbital floor and zygomatic arch, and

Olfactory neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma) in a 2-year-old boy.

A 2-year-old boy presented with sudden blindness and epistaxis resulting from olfactory neuroblastoma with intracranial extension. This disease is uncommon in children, with only 27 cases reported in patients less than 17 years of age. This article reviews the clinical and histological features of this tumor and discusses treatment. Therapy has generally consisted of surgery and radiation. Our child and 2 others treated with radiation and combination chemotherapy (including cyclophosphamide and anthracyclines) have done well with follow-ups of up to 9 1/2 years. Chemotherapy is an important fo

The Endoscopic Versus Open Approach for Anterior Skull Base Tumors: A Systematic Review of Comparative Outcomes and a Framework for Surgical Selection.

BACKGROUND: Anterior skull base tumors (ASBTs) pose significant surgical challenges due to their proximity to critical neurovascular structures. Surgical management has evolved with the adoption of both endoscopic and open approaches. This systematic review synthesizes evidence comparing these approaches in terms of complications, outcomes, and indications. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines, analyzing studies published between 1981 and 2022. A total of 1200 articles were initially identified from databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, JSTOR, and ScienceDi

Preoperative imaging and surgical margins in maxillectomy patients.

BACKGROUND: High rates of positive surgical margins are reported after a maxillectomy. A large part of tumors that are preoperatively considered "operable" can thus not be resected with tumor-free margins. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on medical files of 69 patients that underwent maxillectomy as primary treatment for a squamous cell carcinoma. RESULTS: More than one third (39%) of all resections performed is incomplete, with dorsal or dorsocranial-positive surgical margins in two thirds. Correlation of tumor extension on preoperative imaging to surgical margins status revealed th

An unusual co-presentation of rhinolithiasis and squamous cell carcinoma in the nasal cavity.

Rhinoliths are nasal stones that result from mineralisation of salts around an endogenous or exogenous nidus within the nasal cavity. They are uncommon nasal masses and usually unilateral and single, situated in the floor of the nose. The patient typically presents with nasal obstruction, facial pain and foul-smelling nasal secretion. To the best of our knowledge, the occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma with rhinolithiasis has not been previously reported in the English-language literature. In this article, we present a 63-year-old man, who had unilateral rhinolithiasis with squamous cell ca

Pattern of local relapse of maxillary sinus carcinoma.

Maxillary sinus carcinoma (MSC) is a rare disease with a variety of treatment options. The present study was undertaken to review the outcome of patients with treated MSC in order to clarify the factors related to local recurrence by analyzing CT findings. The study group comprised of 47 cases, 40 males and 7 females with a median age of 61 years (range, 40- 84 years) treated between 1988 to 1996 at the department of radiotherapy. CT was taken with a slice thickness of 5 mm and contrast material was routinely used. The mean follow-up period for the group was 45.0 months (range, 3-125 months).

Fine needle aspiration biopsy of intraoral and oropharyngeal mass lesions.

BACKGROUND: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy has been rarely used in oral and oropharyngeal lesions. The goal of this study was to assess the value and accuracy of FNA biopsy in the diagnosis of oral and oropharyngeal lesions particularly in regards to discriminating benign from malignant tumors. METHODS: Sixteen cases of FNA biopsies obtained of various intraoral and oropharyngeal masses or lesions performed at our institution during the eight-year period from 1998 to 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. The aspiration cytologic diagnoses were correlated with the histologic examination of

Solitary plasmocytoma: ghost tumour?

Solitary plasmocytoma is a rare tumour that belongs to the myeloid dysplasia group. The authors present an unusual evolution of this pathology through a clinical case. A 42-year-old patient was diagnosed with solitary nasosinusal plasmocytoma following biopsy of the right nasal fossa process; several weeks after this the tumour spontaneously regressed. Extramedullar plasmocytoma is a myeloid dysplasia that seldom evolves into multiple myeloma. Spontaneous regression has been described for some malignancies, implying immunological factors, but not previously for extramedullary plasmocytoma.
