[Maxillary mucocele: two case reports and review of literature].

Mucoceles are benign expansive conditions, chronically evolving, from paranasal sinuses. Most frequent localized in the ethmofrontal area and related with sinusal ostial drainage. Maxillary mucoceles are rarer and related with traumatic, tumoral or surgical pathologies, particularly with the Caldwell-Luc incision. These mucoceles demand an aggressive treatment als those etmofrontals in order to achieve a radical exeresis through an outer incision. We report 2 cases of maxillary mucocele. The first was a big one of idiopathic type, the other was associated to an inverted papilloma sitting in th

Radiological aspects of aspergillosis in the paranasal sinuses.

A retrospective radiographic study was performed on 142 proven cases of Aspergillosis in the paranasal sinuses. In all but two cases the mycosis was unilateral and in all cases the maxillary sinus was infected. A common radiographic presentation was a homogeneous opacity of the infected maxillary sinus, while about 50% of the cases showed nonspecific infectious changes of other paranasal sinuses additionally. Earlier stages of the disease showed an intraluminal soft tissue mass, representing the mycelium conglomerate. Bone destruction due to Aspergillosis could not be proven. 58% of the cases

The radiological appearance of the post-Caldwell-Luc maxillary sinus.

A review of the radiographic findings in 19 patients who had undergone unilateral or bilateral Caldwell-Luc procedures for chronic maxillary sinusitis revealed improvement in the radiographic appearance of the sinuses in 13 and lack of improvement, progression or recurrence of disease in six. Eight of the patients had changes which could be attributed directly to surgery. These included fibro-osseous proliferation in five, antral contraction in four and compartmentalisation in two. Follow-up studies, including pluridirectional tomography and computed tomography, can reliably distinguish post-o…

Supernumerary, ectopic tooth in the maxillary antrum presenting with recurrent haemoptysis.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic eruption of teeth in non-dental sites is a rare phenomenon and can present in a variety of ways such as chronic or recurrent sinusitis, sepsis, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, headaches, ostiomeatal complex disease and facial numbness. However, presentation of such patients with recurrent haemoptysis has not been described in the literature so far. We have described a case of an ectopic, supernumerary molar tooth in the maxillary antrum in a patient who initially presented with haemoptysis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old male presented with a 2-month history of episodic h

Detection of maxillary sinus pathologies using deep learning algorithms.

PURPOSE: Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, is widely utilized in medical applications. Identifying maxillary sinus pathologies before surgical interventions is crucial for ensuring successful treatment outcomes. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is commonly employed for maxillary sinus evaluations due to its high resolution and lower radiation exposure. This study aims to assess the accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in detecting maxillary sinus pathologies from CBCT scans. METHODS: A dataset comprising 1000 maxillary sinuses (MS) from 500 patients was analyzed

Objective computerised assessment of residual ridge resorption in the human maxilla and maxillary sinus pneumatisation.

OBJECTIVES: Atrophic resorption of the maxillary alveolar ridge is a complication that makes implantological rehabilitation critical. Our aim was to develop a novel computer aided procedure for the accurate quantitative assessment of maxillary residual ridge resorption including pneumatisation of the maxillary sinus that goes beyond previously described approaches and to apply it to a large dataset. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To develop and refine the method, we performed a retrospective analysis using computed tomography data from 405 patients to generate segmented, three-dimensional models of z

Effects of purinergic stimulation on ciliary beat frequency and chloride secretion in sinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify the functional abnormality of sinusitis-affected mucosa by observing the responsiveness of the mucosa to purinergic stimulation after the onset of sinusitis and during the recovery period. We also aimed to identify possible beneficial effects of purinergic agonists on sinusitis. METHODS: A rabbit sinusitis model was developed by blocking maxillary ostia. Sinus mucosae were harvested immediately and 1 and 4 weeks after reopening the ostia. We measured chloride secretion and ciliary beat frequencies responding to purinergic stimulation. RESULTS: The increases o

An experimental model of chronic rhinosinusitis in rabbits without bacterial inoculation.

PURPOSE: Evaluate and compare two different experimental techniques of maxillary sinus ostium occlusion using N-butyl cyanoacrylate in developing chronic histological findings without the inoculation of pathogenic bacteria among rabbits. METHODS: In a randomized study, sixteen New Zealand rabbits were assigned for occlusion of the right maxillary sinus through a transmaxillary approach or through the roof of the nasal cavity. The contralateral sinus served as a control. After 12 weeks, the animals were sacrificed for blinded histopathological analysis of the maxillary sinus mucosa. RESULTS:

Orbital wall thickness and the spread of infection from the paranasal sinuses.

Ninety-three human skulls (80 adults and 13 children) have been examined and the extent of thin bone in the party walls between the orbit and the frontal, ethmoidal and maxillary sinuses has been assessed. Translucent bone is most often present in the lateral wall of the ethmoidal labyrinth and least often in the floor of the frontal sinus. In children such bone is present significantly less often in the roof of the maxillary sinus (P less than 0.001) than in adults. Computerized tomography scans and clinical data from 6 patients with orbital cellulitis were reviewed. In one of these an infero

[Does the use of nasal vasoconstrictor agents change tomodensitometric images of nasosinusal polyposis?].

This study compared the results of the CT scan of the paranasal sinuses in nasal polyposis patients before and after a topical vasoconstrictor application on the nasal mucosa. No change have been observed either on the maxillary and ethmoidal sinuses, or the middle meatus. On the other hand, an important retraction was observed on the nasal mucosa, in particular on the inferior turbinate. Then, the application of a topical vasoconstrictor on the nasal mucosa does not seem necessary in order to explore the sinuses in patients with nasal polyposis.

Development of the maxillary sinus from birth to age 18. Postnatal growth pattern.

OBJECTIVES: Anatomical and developmental descriptions of the maxillary sinus may be of great clinical importance. An understanding of age-related changes in the dimensions and volume of the normal maxillary sinus may help in the evaluation of radiographs and identification of sinus abnormalities. The aim of the present study was to define growth patterns of maxillary sinuses in children up to the age of 18 years and evaluate the correlation between normal age-related changes in dimensions and volume. METHODS: The research sample consisted of CT scans of 170 patients subdivided into 17 groups
