Context Memory Encoding and Retrieval Temporal Dynamics are Modulated by Attention across the Adult Lifespan.

Episodic memories are multidimensional, including simple and complex features. How we successful encode and recover these features in time, whether these temporal dynamics are preserved across age, even under conditions of reduced memory performance, and the role of attention on these temporal dynamics is unknown. In the current study, we applied time-resolved multivariate decoding to oscillatory electroencephalography (EEG) in an adult lifespan sample to investigate the temporal order of successful encoding and recognition of simple and complex perceptual context features. At encoding, partic

Father- and Mother-Child Reminiscing About Past Pain and Young Children's Cognitive Skills.

Objective Painful experiences are common, distressing, and salient in childhood. Parent-child reminiscing about past painful experiences is an untapped opportunity to process pain-related distress and, similar to reminiscing about other distressing experiences, promotes children's broader development. Previous research has documented the role of parent-child reminiscing about past pain in children's pain-related cognitions (i.e., memories for pain), but no study to date has examined the association between parent-child reminiscing about past painful experiences and children's broader cognitive

[Progressive focal cortical atrophies].

Progressive focal cortical atrophies are degenerative conditions characterised by the insidious onset and gradual exacerbation of an impairment in a single cognitive domain related to circumscribed cerebral atrophy. Several focal cortical syndromes with deficits in the realm of cognition are reviewed: progressive impairment of language (primary progressive aphasia), speech (progressive anarthria), semantic memory (semantic dementia), episodic memory (pure progressive amnesia), vision (progressive perceptual or visuo-spatial deficits) and gesture (progressive apraxia). These conditions are hist

The role of theta and gamma oscillations in item memory, source memory, and memory confidence.

Theta and gamma oscillations have been linked to episodic memory processes in various studies. Both oscillations seem to be vital for processes guided by the medial temporal lobe, such as the retrieval of information from memory. While theta oscillations increase with successful memory, it is unclear what the unique contribution of theta is to various subcomponents of memory. On the other hand, memory-related gamma oscillations have been mainly reported in the hippocampus, leaving the role of neocortical gamma in memory underexplored. In the current study, we explored how unique variability in

A review of factors that moderate autobiographical memory performance in patients with major depressive disorder.

Studies of autobiographical recall in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) reveal overgeneralization, where autobiographical memory (AM) comprises primarily factual or repeated information as opposed to details specific in time and in place and definitive of episodic re-experiencing. In addition to reviewing AM impairment in MDD, we explore the contribution of key method, demographic, and clinical variables to this dysfunction. Several candidate variables emerge, including testing method, emotion, mood state, illness burden, medication status, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), comorbid

The effects on memory of pipequaline, alone or in combination with diazepam.

Pipequaline (PK 8165) is a putative mixed agonist/antagonist at benzodiazepine receptors. The effects of pipequaline and diazepam on memory were assessed in 12 normal volunteers. Diazepam 10 mg or placebo was added to two doses of pipequaline, 50 and 150 mg, or to placebo in a double-blind crossover design. Diazepam produced impairments of episodic memory. In contrast, the effects of pipequaline were minor. Addition diazepam to pipequaline increased drowsiness and general lethargy, with a less marked effect occurring for the higher dose of pipequaline alone. Pipequaline did not antagonise any

Can I make the time or is it running out? That depends in part on what difficulty implies about me.

When thinking about a task or goal feels difficult, people can interpret this as signaling self-relevant value (difficulty-as-importance) and a reminder to stop wasting time on self-irrelevant things (difficulty-as-impossibility). Identity-based motivation theory predicts that both interpretations are available in memory, vary in momentary accessibility, and shape action in part through activating action-relevant judgments. We note that in situations calling for task engagement, action-relevant judgment entails making sense of time, an abstract concept that people reason about metaphorically.

Imagining the Future or Recalling the Past: Effects on State Attachment Security Through Episodic Priming.

The current study examined whether imagining a future secure relationship can increase state attachment security to a degree comparable to recalling a secure past or current relationship. In a within-subjects design, 88 participants completed three weekly tasks: future thinking, episodic recall, and a neutral shopping control. Each session involved a brief imagery-and-writing task followed immediately by state attachment measures. Compared with the neutral control, both relational priming tasks were associated with higher state attachment security, and the future and recall tasks did not diffe

Was that really me? Relationships between memory and sense of self in people with maladaptive daydreaming.

OBJECTIVES: A cohesive sense of self depends on intact autobiographical memory, both of which are impaired in dissociative disorders. Maladaptive daydreaming (MD), a recently proposed dissociative condition, involves excessive immersion in fantastical inner worlds, often at the expense of real-life engagement, leading to distress and functional impairment. The present study aimed to examine whether maladaptive daydreamers' persistent focus on imagined events and an idealized self, alongside reduced attention to real experiences, may create confusion, impair memory, and ultimately disrupt self-

Sense of own body shapes neural processes of memory encoding and reinstatement.

How is the fundamental sense of one's body, a basic aspect of selfhood, incorporated into memories for events? Disrupting bodily self-awareness during encoding impairs functioning of the left posterior hippocampus during retrieval, which implies weakened encoding. However, how changes in bodily self-awareness influence neural encoding is unknown. We investigated how the sense of body ownership, a core aspect of the bodily self, impacts encoding in the left posterior hippocampus and additional core memory regions including the angular gyrus. Furthermore, we assessed the degree to which memories

The days we never forget: Flashbulb memories across the life span in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by autobiographical memory deficits, with the ability to retrieve episodic-rich memories being particularly affected. Here, we investigated the influence of AD on a specific subtype of episodic memories known as flashbulb memories (i.e., the ability to remember the personal circumstances for the reception of important news events). We examined the frequency, characteristics, and the temporal distribution of flashbulb memories across the life span. To this aim, 28 older adults diagnosed with AD and a matched sample of 29 healthy older controls were prob

Cognitive vulnerabilities and depressed mood in acquired brain injury.

ABSTRACTAcquired Brain Injury (ABI), an important cause of long-term disability, is associated with increased rates of depression in addition to common cognitive and physical consequences. Past research has linked post-ABI depression to injury severity (e.g., extent of physical or cognitive impairment) and premorbid mood problems. In the general (non-ABI) population, depression is associated with cognitive vulnerabilities that have informed the development of psychological interventions. In this observational study in a heterogeneous sample of individuals with chronic stage ABI, we examine two

Visual hallucinations of autobiographical memories: a single-case study.

Introduction: We report an epileptic patient who experienced hallucinatory visual experiences of autobiographical memories from her past. These visual experiences were confined to the lower left quadrant of her visual field. Methods: We carried out a single-case study that used brain-imaging, EEG and behavioural methods to study this patient. Results: We found that this patient had an incomplete left inferior homonymous quadrantanopia due to a lesion of right occipital cortex, and also that she showed neurological abnormalities in right temporal cortex, a region that is part of the brain's autob

Effect of Alzheimer's Pathology on Task-Related Brain Network Reconfiguration in Aging.

Large-scale brain networks undergo widespread changes with older age and in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Research in young adults (YA) suggest that the underlying functional architecture of brain networks remains relatively consistent between rest and task states. However, it remains unclear whether the same is true in aging and to what extent any changes may be related to accumulation of AD pathology such as β-amyloid (Aβ) and tau. Here, we examined age-related differences in functional connectivity (FC) between rest and an object-scene mnemonic discrimination

[The Relationship between the Autistic Traits and Everyday Memory Processing in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Healthy Adults].

We investigated the association between everyday memory and autistic traits in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD, n=22) and healthy adults (n=20) by using the Rivermead Behavioral Memory Test (RBMT). A generalized linear model (GLM) was used to explore the relationships between the subjects' performance on the RBMT as the objective variable and the composite score of the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) as the explanatory variable. Multiple models were created with the AQ subscales ('Social skills,' 'Attention-shifting,' 'Attention to details,' 'Communication,' 'Imagination'), age, gender

Children show adult-like hippocampal pattern similarity for familiar but not novel events.

The ability to detect differences among similar events in our lives is a crucial aspect of successful episodic memory performance, which develops across early childhood. The neural substrate of this ability is supported by operations in the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Here, we used representational similarity analysis (RSA) to measure neural pattern similarity in hippocampus, perirhinal cortex, and parahippocampal cortex for 4- to 10-year-old children and adults during naturalistic viewing of clips from the same compared to different movies. Further, we assessed the role of prior exposure to i

Prospective Memory in Service Members with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Prospective memory (PM) is the ability to remember the intention to perform an action in the future. Following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), the brain structures supporting such PM may be compromised. PM is essential for remembering activities specific to TBI survivors that promote recovery, such as following doctors' orders, taking necessary medications, completing physical rehabilitation exercises, and maintaining supportive social relationships. Since the year 2000, more than 315,897 US Service Members are reported to have sustained an mTBI1, yet little has been done to

Continuous theta burst stimulation of angular gyrus reduces subjective recollection.

The contribution of lateral parietal regions such as the angular gyrus to human episodic memory has been the subject of much debate following widespread observations of left parietal activity in healthy volunteers during functional neuroimaging studies of memory retrieval. Patients with lateral parietal lesions are not amnesic, but recent evidence indicates that their memory abilities may not be entirely preserved. Whereas recollection appears intact when objective measures such as source accuracy are used, patients often exhibit reduced subjective confidence in their accurate recollections. W

Rumination and autobiographical memory impairment in patients with schizophrenia.

Although patients with schizophrenia exhibit autobiographical memory impairment, which is considered to be a limiting factor in their daily life, the mechanisms underlying such impairment have been rarely studied. In the current study, we investigate whether rumination and, in particular, brooding, which is a form of maladaptive repetitive thinking, may be linked to the difficulty that patients with schizophrenia experience when attempting to access specific autobiographical memories. Our results indicate that patients reported less specific autobiographical memories compared to control partic
