The potential beneficial effect of sleep deprivation following traumatic events to preventing PTSD: Review of current insight regarding sleep, memory, and trauma resonating with ancient rituals-Àìsùn Oku (African) and Tsuya (Japanese).

Sleep figures in numerous ancient texts, for example, Epic of Gilgamesh, and has been a focus for countless mystical and philosophical texts. Even in the present century, sleep remains one of the most complex behaviors whose function still remains to be further explored. Current hypotheses suggest that among other functions, sleep contributes to memory processes. Memory is a core topic of study in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other stress-related phenomena. It is widely accepted that sleep plays a major role in the consolidation of newly encoded hippocampus-dependent memories to p

Counteractive effects of norepinephrine and amphetamine on quabain-induced amnesia.

Ouabain, administered 5 min prior to learning induces amnesia for a single-trial passive avoidance task in day-old chickens by inhibiting memory formation during the labile sodium-pump dependent phase. Amphetamine and norepinephrine (NE) successfully counteract ouabain-induced amnesia when administered immediately after learning. The actions of these drugs on ouabain-induced amnesia parallel that of diphenylhydantoin (DPH), and within similar time constraints. It is concluded that amphetamine (through release of NE) and norepinephrine exert their effects through stimulation of Na+/K+ ATP'ase a

A three-terminal MoTe2 artificial synapse with electrical and optical dual-mode plasticity.

Artificial synaptic devices capable of integrating sensing, memory, and computing functions are highly desirable for next-generation neuromorphic systems. However, most reported artificial synapses rely on single-mode electrical or optical stimulation, limiting their ability to achieve multimodal perception and adaptive information processing. Here, we demonstrate a three-terminal artificial synaptic device based on MoTe2 flakes that enables both electrical and optical synaptic modulation within a unified device architecture. The device exhibits bidirectional electrical synaptic plasticity thr

Hebb repetition learning in adolescents with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Hebb repetition learning is a form of long-term serial order learning that can occur when sequences of items in an immediate serial recall task are repeated. Repetition improves performance because of the gradual integration of serial order information from short-term memory into a more stable long-term memory trace. AIMS: The current study assessed whether adolescents with non-specific intellectual disabilities showed Hebb repetition effects, and if their magnitude was equivalent to those of children with typical development, matched for mental age. METHODS: Two immediate serial

Psychological distress and delusional memories after critical care: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: A considerable number of intensive care unit (ICU) survivors report delusional memories, which refer to dreams, nightmares, paranoid delusions and hallucinations experienced in the ICU. These memories often have a strong vividness, long duration and high emotional impact. AIM: The aim of this review was to investigate and synthesize published literature about psychological distress associated with delusional memories of adult ICU survivors. METHODS: Using key terms, a search was conducted in major health care electronic databases [Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Li

The tyrosine kinase Itk suppresses CD8+ memory T cell development in response to bacterial infection.

Vaccine efficacy depends on strong long-term development of immune memory and the formation of memory CD8(+) T cells is critical for recall responses to infection. Upon antigen recognition by naïve T cells, the strength of the TcR signal influences the subsequent effector and memory cells differentiation. Here, we have examined the role of Itk, a tyrosine kinase critical for TcR signaling, in CD8(+) effector and memory T cell differentiation during Listeria monocytogenes infection. We found that the reduced TcR signal strength in Itk deficient naïve CD8(+) T cells enhances the generation of me

Göttingen Minipigs as a Model to Evaluate Longevity, Functionality, and Memory of Immune Response Induced by Pertussis Vaccines.

Evaluation of the short-term and long-term immunological responses in a preclinical model that simulates the targeted age population with a relevant vaccination schedule is essential for human vaccine development. A Göttingen minipig model was assessed, using pertussis vaccines, to demonstrate that vaccine antigen-specific humoral and cellular responses, including IgG titers, functional antibodies, Th polarization and memory B cells can be assessed in a longitudinal study. A vaccination schedule of priming with a whole cell (DTwP) or an acellular (DTaP) pertussis vaccine was applied in neonata

Recency effect in anterograde amnesia: evidence for distinct memory stores underlying enhanced retrieval of terminal items in immediate and delayed recall paradigms.

This study was devised to investigate immediate and delayed recency effects in anterograde amnesic patients. For this purpose, a word-list immediate recall paradigm and a modified version of the procedure devised by Baddeley and Hitch [Attention and Performance, Erlbaum, NJ, 1977] for eliciting the recency effect in delayed recall conditions was administered to a sample of amnesic patients and to a group of age-matched healthy subjects. Amnesics disclosed a fully normal recency effect in the immediate recall paradigm and a deficient recency effect in the delayed recall condition. These data, t

Auditory event-related potentials (P3) and cognitive performance in recreational ecstasy polydrug users: evidence from a 12-month longitudinal study.

RATIONALE: There is important preclinical evidence of the long-lasting neurotoxic and selective effects of ecstasy (MDMA) on serotonin systems in nonhuman primates. In humans, long-term recreational use of ecstasy has been mainly associated with memory impairment. OBJECTIVE: The first aim of our study was to evaluate the cognitive and electrophysiological long-term alterations associated with lifetime ecstasy use within a sample of ecstasy polydrug users along a 1-year follow-up. Our second aim was to explore the relationship between specific cognitive functions and P300 (P3) event-related po

[Memory impairments in temporal lobe epilepsy].

Temporal lobe epilepsy is known to present with various cognitive impairments, among which memory deficits are frequently reported by patients. Memory deficits can be classified into two types: classical hippocampal amnesia, which is characterized by abnormalities detected in neuropsychological assessments, and atypical memory deficits, such as accelerated long-term amnesia and autobiographical memory impairment, which cannot be identified using standard testing methods. These deficits are believed to arise from a complex interplay among structural brain abnormalities, interictal epileptic dis

Sex-Dependent Effects of Circadian Rhythm Disruptions on Novel Object Recognition Memory, Locomotion, Pain Threshold, Rearing Behavior, and BDNF and GSK-3β Hippocampal Levels in Rats.

Evidence has shown that constant light or constant darkness significantly impairs cognitive functions and affects the mood state. The present study investigated the effect of circadian rhythm disturbances (circadian rhythm disruptions, CRDs) on locomotor activity, rearing behavior, pain threshold, novel object recognition memory, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3β) expression levels in the hippocampus of both sexes of rats. CRD was done using a combination of constant light (48 h) and constant darkness (48 h) periods for 8 (short-term), 16

The continuity hypothesis: the relationship of long-term alcoholism to the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Although alcoholic Korsakoff's syndrome has traditionally been considered an acute disorder related to a nutritional deficiency, recent evidence demonstrating that ethanol may be neurotoxic has raised the possibility that the perceptual, problem-solving, and memory deficits associated with this chronic neurological disorder may develop slowly over decades of alcohol abuse. A review of the recent cognitive literature provides only limited support for this "continuity hypothesis." Long-term alcoholics, as with patients with alcoholic Korsakoff's syndrome, are impaired on numerous visuoconceptual

Long-term neurocognitive function after whole-brain radiotherapy in patients with melanoma brain metastases in the era of immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) used to be standard of care for patients suffering from melanoma brain metastases (MBM) and may still be applicable in selected cases. Deterioration of neurocognitive function (NCF) is commonly seen during and after WBRT. Knowledge on long-term effects in melanoma patients is limited due to short survival rates. With the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors, patients may experience ongoing disease control, emphasizing the need for paying more attention to potential long-term adverse effects. METHODS: In this single-center study, we identifie

Source memory in the real world: a neuropsychological study of flashbulb memory.

A flashbulb memory (FM) is a vivid, enduring memory for how one learned about a surprising, shocking event. It thus involves memory for the source of event information, as opposed to memory for the event itself. Which brain regions are involved in FM, however, is uncertain. Although medial temporal lobe/diencephalic (MTL/D) damage impairs content or item memory, frontal lobe (FL) damage has been associated with impaired source memory. One would therefore expect that FM should depend on the FLs, although two recent reports do not support this idea. In the current study, we examined memory for t

Acute perinatal asphyxia impairs non-spatial memory and alters motor coordination in adult male rats.

A large body of clinical evidence suggests a possible association between perinatal asphyxia and the onset of early, as well as long-term, neurological and psychiatric disorders including cognitive deficits. The present study investigated cognitive and motor function modifications in a well characterized and clinically relevant experimental rat model of human perinatal asphyxia. The results reported here show that adult rats exposed to a single (20 min) asphyctic episode at delivery displayed: (a) a deficit in non-spatial memory, assessed in a novel object recognition task; (b) an impaired mot

Long-lasting memory abnormalities following exposure to the mouse defense test battery: An animal model of PTSD.

Memory dysfunctions are thought to play a crucial role both in the development and the maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Patients suffering from this condition persistently re-experience the traumatic event particularly when exposed to trauma-related cues and they display memory alterations. The objective of the present study was to investigate the long-term effects of a traumatic stress exposure on defensive behaviors and memory performance in mice confronted with a natural threat (i.e. a rat) in the defense test battery (MDTB), a procedure developed by the Blanchard group

Memory in Psychiatric Disorders: A Review.

Memory constitutes a fundamental cognitive domain, and converging evidence suggests that its dysfunction represents a prominent, though not exclusive, transdiagnostic dimension across major psychiatric disorders. This review aimed to integrate neurobiological, cognitive, and clinical evidence on domain-specific memory impairments in mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, post-traumatic stress, and psychotic disorders. A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to November 2025 for peer-reviewed studies examining short-term, working, long-term, episodic, semanti

An LSTM architecture for real-time multi-domain stability boundary prediction beyond post-fault dependency in power systems.

The proposed study introduces a long short-term memory architecture integrated with a novel comprehensive dynamic security index to enable multi-domain stability assessment beyond post-fault dependencies. The comprehensive dynamic security index unifies voltage, frequency, and transient stability metrics into a single interpretable scalar, quantifying real-time proximity to instability boundaries while classifying system states into five actionable categories. By prioritizing generator terminal dynamics, the framework operates with reduced PMU coverage through strategic feature engineering. Va
