Direct-bandgap transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are appealing candidates to construct atomic-scale spin-optical light sources owing to their valley-contrasting optical selection rules. Here we report on a spin-optical monolayer laser by incorporating a WS2 monolayer into a heterostructure microcavity supporting high-Q photonic spin-valley resonances. Inspired by the creation of valley pseudo-spins in monolayers, the spin-valley modes are generated from a photonic Rashba-type spin splitting of a bound state in the continuum, which gives rise to opposite spin-polarized ±K valleys due t

The addition of interelement compounds with heteroatom-heteroatom single bonds to carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds under light irradiation is believed to be an atomically efficient method to procure materials with carbon-heteroatom bonds. In this study, we achieved the photoinduced bisphosphination of alkynes using the phosphorus interelement compound, tetraphenyldiphosphine monosulfide (1), to stereoselectively obtain the corresponding (E)-vic-1,2-bisphosphinoalkenes, which are important transition-metal ligands. The bisphosphination reaction was performed by mixing 1 and various alkynes and t

CONSPECTUS: As Pasteur noted more than 150 years ago, asymmetry exists in matter at all organization levels. Biopolymers such as proteins or DNA adopt one-handed conformations, as a result of the chirality of their constituent building blocks. Even at the level of elementary particles, asymmetry exists due to parity violation in the weak nuclear force. While the origin of homochirality in living systems remains obscure, as does the possibility of its connection with broken symmetries at larger or smaller length scales, its centrality to biomolecular structure is clear: the single-handed forms

Regulating type-I and type-II photochemistry is essential for anticancer photodynamic therapy. Type-I pathways generate hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, whereas type-II produces singlet oxygen. We tuned reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by varying Pt(II) configuration and ligand flexibility. Among the four complexes, rigid cis-configured c-Pt-BDP showed maximal •OH production and photocytotoxicity, with light-IC50 values of 0.89 μM in Panc02 and 0.93 μM in A549 cells. Flexible cis-configured c-Pt-CH2-BDP favored 1O2 and showed moderate activity (light-IC50: >2.42 and 1.77 μM, respectiv

The spread of bacteria resistant to multiple drugs has required the development of new strategies for treating infections. Light-activated materials are emerging as a promising alternative, as they can inactivate bacteria by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), without inducing resistance. Based on this search for new materials, silver (Ag) catalysts (2% and 10%) supported on titanium dioxide (TiO2) were synthesized via modified sol-gel synthesis, utilizing tapioca as a sustainable gelling agent. The Ag/TiO2 catalysts (2AgT/V and 10AgT/V) characterized by spectra in the infrared region sh

While silver halides (AgX) are promising visible-light photocatalysts for water remediation, their practical deployment is severely hindered by intrinsic photocorrosion, rapid charge recombination, and macroscopic recovery challenges. Here, we demonstrate a monolithic AgX/biomass carbon aerogel composite platform, constructed by anchoring AgX nanocrystals in situ onto a 3D hierarchical carbon skeleton. The carbon network not only suppresses nanoparticle aggregation but also plays contrasting optical roles: amplifying the intrinsic visible-light absorption of AgBr while endowing the otherwise U

Recent advances in antimicrobial drug design have incorporated photopharmacology to control drug behavior through light activation, alongside traditional phenotypical strategies including molecular hybridization and metal incorporation. The quinoline and benzimidazole scaffolds are important chemical frameworks identified by the Medicines for Malaria Venture and are known to exert their antiplasmodial activity by inhibiting hemozoin formation, an important target in antimalarial drug design. These scaffolds form part of growing libraries in drug discovery, aimed at developing novel and potent

The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic cycloaddition reactivity of aryl-substituted pyridine(diimine) (PDI) chromium ether complexes and alkene-diene derived metallacycles are described. The reduction of either (PDI)CrCl2 or (PDI)CrCl3 with sodium and catalytic amounts of naphthalene furnished the corresponding chromium THF or diethyl ether complexes. Exposure of the reduced chromium compounds to a mixture of butadiene and ethylene induced rapid oxidative cyclization and yielded isolable, thermally stable chromium η,1η3 trans-metallacycles. In the presence of pure butadiene, oxidative

Limited utilization of photogenerated charge carriers in titanium dioxide under visible light have hinder its application development. To address this challenge, a novel N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and oxygen vacancies (OVs) synergistically decorated on TiO2 (P25) was synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Under visible light irradiation, the first order reaction rate constants of formaldehyde (HCHO) photocatalytic oxidation by OVs-TiO2 and N-CQDs/OVs-TiO2 was significantly higher than that of pristine P25, with 10.1 and 16.7 folds increase, respectively. This work presents an integrated chip of a resonant cavity light emitter and photon detector (RCLEPD) to address the requirements of wearable optical medical devices for compact size, high efficiency, and interference resistance sensors. The optical radiation pattern and light extraction efficiency of the resonant cavity light emitting diode (RCLED) as well as the optical absorption spectrum of the resonant cavity enhanced photon detector (RCEPD) are theoretically simulated. Additionally, the wavelength selectivity of the RCEPD absorption spectrum is analyzed. Material epitaxial growth of RCLE

Photocatalytic degradation of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants is a very challenging process due to the high redox potential of the C-Cl bond that requires wide band gap catalysts that are activated under UV light. Designing a Z-scheme heterojunction between visible light-activated metal oxides with compatible band gaps enables these redox potentials. Herein, we report the design of a pyrochlore/Aurivillius Z-scheme heterojunction to enhance the photocatalytic activity of BiVO4 for the degradation of trichloroethylene. We prepared Bi2Ru2O7/BiVO4 heterostructured photocatalysts by a co

First row transition metal complexes with d4 to d7 electronic configurations exhibit spin-crossover (SCO), which can be induced by external stimuli, such as temperature, pressure and light. The low-spin to high-spin transition has been widely studied, but very little is known about the reverse process. Here, we present a theoretical study of thermal and light-induced high-to-low spin crossover in prototypical Fe(II) complexes. The lifetime of the high-spin state in the thermal process is determined using Fermi's golden rule. With this methodology, we have accurately computed the transfer rate

Infections caused by bacteria threaten human health, so how to effectively kill bacteria is an urgent problem. We therefore synthesized a NH2-MIL-125-GO-Pt ternary composite heterojunction with graphene oxide (GO) and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles co-doped with metal-organic framework (NH2-MIL-125) for use in photocatalytic and photothermal synergistic disinfection under white light irradiation. Due to the good conductivity of GO and the Schottky junction between Pt and MOF, the doping of GO and Pt will effectively separate and transfer the photogenerated electron-hole pairs generated by NH2-MIL

Developing nitridosilicate red phosphors under mild synthesis conditions is important for regulating the emission quality of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Based on the thermodynamic theory and crystal structure chemistry for the synthesis of nitridosilicates, the Gibbs free energy variation of a hybrid system can be made more negative by reducing the proportion of Si3N4 and increasing the proportion of M2N3 and AlN, enabling the formation of new nitridosilicates under mild conditions. Therefore, a general chemical formula MxSiyAlzNk was proposed for the design of nitridosilicate red pho

Understanding matter at the most fundamental level requires optical microscopy with ever-higher spatial resolution. Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) has enabled important advances, circumventing the diffraction limit of light by confining it to the apex of a sharp metallic tip. However, the mesoscopic tip geometry restricts the spatial resolution to the nanometer scale. Here, using a conventional tabletop continuous-wave mid-infrared laser and intensity-based detection we observe optical signals modulated on Ångstrom length scales, consistent with light emission from atomically co

Interlayer excitons (IXs) in van der Waals heterostructures exhibit intrinsically long lifetimes, but disorder-induced inhomogeneous broadening, rapid dephasing, and stacking-dependent emission intensity limit their use in coherent light sources. Here, we integrate robust IXs formed in a two-dimensional perovskite/transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructure, whose emission is largely insensitive to twist angle, into a vertical optical cavity operating in the weak-coupling regime. Quantized momentum-space spectra indicate three-dimensional photonic confinement, which narrows the emission li

Molecular cages have emerged as powerful platforms for photocatalysis due to their ability to combine substrate confinement with efficient light harvesting. In particular, porphyrinoid-based cages provide confined microenvironments that mimic enzymatic active sites while enabling photoinduced energy- and electron-transfer processes. This review explores the design, synthesis, and photocatalytic applications of porphyrinoid-based metal-organic and covalent cages, highlighting their use in promoting organic transformations of encapsulated guest molecules. The discussed systems promote a variety

Photocatalysis is a green and environmentally friendly method for degrading dangerous and nonbiodegradable pollutants. In this study, a sequence of metal-free triazine-based electronic donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers Tr-X (X = Th, BT, BTh) were prepared by D-A configuration regulation between triazine (Tr) and monomers containing N and S, such as thiophene (Th), bithiophene (BTh) and benzothiadiazole (BT) units, for the photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and benzene contaminants in water under visible light. Among these, Tr-BTh exhibited complete photocatalytic degradatio

To identify genes involved in defense against heavy-metal stresses, a cDNA library originating from mercuric chloride-treated maize (Zea mays L. cv. INRA 258) leaves was constructed and analysed by differential screening using cDNAs derived from treated and untreated plants. Transcriptionally activated cDNA clones, designated CHEM (chemically-activated), were isolated and characterized. They represent various known proteins, such as glycine-rich proteins, pathogenesis-related proteins, chaperones and membrane proteins. The expression of the genes encoding these proteins was studied in maize su
