Incorporating latent survival trajectories and covariate heterogeneity in time-to-event data analysis: a joint mixture model approach.

BACKGROUND: Finite mixture models have been recently applied in time-to-event data to identify subgroups with distinct hazard functions, yet they often assume differing covariate effects on failure times across latent classes but homogeneous covariate distributions. This study aimed to develop a method for analyzing time-to-event data while accounting for unobserved heterogeneity within a mixture modeling framework. METHODS: A joint model was developed to incorporate latent survival trajectories and observed information for the joint analysis of time-to-event outcomes, correlated discrete and

The statistical illusion of a global HIV endgame: disparities in regional progress toward 95-95-95 targets.

This study analyzes prevalence growth rates across regions using UNAIDS data and statistical modeling to forecast trends through 2050. Globally, the 95-95-95 targets are projected to be achieved by 2035, 2034, and 2025, respectively, largely due to the success of robust interventions in Eastern and Southern Africa. While some progress has also been made in other regions, including improvements in treatment coverage and testing uptake in parts of Latin America and Asia, significant gaps remain, with a continued high burden and sustained accumulation of new infections in certain countries, where

Time series modelling and forecasting of mpox incidence and mortality in Nigeria.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) twice, in response to the global outbreak, first in May 2022 and again in August 2024, after a span of 2 years and 3 months. African countries continue to be a hotspot for the ongoing mpox outbreaks and Nigeria has contributed substantially in exporting the virus to other countries, highlighting the need for an in-depth analysis of outbreak patterns and forecasting to inform public health policy. This study used the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model to perform a 14

Structured feature ranking for genomic marker identification accommodating multiple types of networks.

Numerous statistical methods have been developed to search for genomic markers associated with the development, progression, and response to treatment of complex diseases. Among them, feature ranking plays a vital role due to its intuitive formulation and computational efficiency. However, most of the existing methods are based on the marginal importance of molecular predictors and share the limitation that the dependence (network) structures among predictors are not well accommodated, where a disease phenotype usually reflects various biological processes that interact in a complex network. I

MPES-R: Multi-Parameter Evidence Synthesis in R for Survival Extrapolation-A Tutorial.

Survival extrapolation often plays an important role in health technology assessment (HTA), and there are a range of different approaches available. Approaches that can leverage external evidence (i.e. data or information collected outside the main data source of interest) may be helpful, given the extent of uncertainty often present when determining a suitable survival extrapolation. One of these methods is the multi-parameter evidence synthesis (MPES) approach, first proposed for use in HTA by Guyot et al., and more recently by Jackson. While MPES has potential benefits over conventional ext

A novel nonparametric time-dependent precision-recall curve estimator for right-censored survival data.

In order to assess prognostic risk for individuals in precision health research, risk prediction models are increasingly used, in which statistical models are used to estimate the risk of future outcomes based on clinical and nonclinical characteristics. The predictive accuracy of a risk score must be assessed before it can be used in routine clinical decision making, where the receiver operator characteristic curves, precision-recall curves, and their corresponding area under the curves are commonly used metrics to evaluate the discriminatory ability of a continuous risk score. Among these th

Using a Leroux-prior-based conditional autoregression-based strategy to map the short-term association between temperature and bacillary dysentery and its attributable burden in China.

BACKGROUND: In China, bacillary dysentery (BD) is the third most frequently reported infectious disease, with the greatest annual incidence rate of 38.03 cases per 10,000 person-years. It is well acknowledged that temperature is associated with BD and the previous studies of temperature-BD association in different provinces of China present a considerable heterogeneity, which may lead to an inaccurate estimation for a region-specific association and incorrect attributable burdens. Meanwhile, the common methods for multi-city studies, such as stratified strategy and meta-analysis, have their ow

Radiomics-based ultrasound models for thyroid nodule differentiation in Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Previous models for differentiating benign and malignant thyroid nodules(TN) have predominantly focused on the characteristics of the nodules themselves, without considering the specific features of the thyroid gland(TG) in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis(HT). In this study, we analyzed the clinical and ultrasound radiomics(USR) features of TN in patients with HT and constructed a model for differentiating benign and malignant nodules specifically in this population. METHODS: We retrospectively collected clinical and ultrasound data from 227 patients with TN and concomitant

Tuberculosis in Prisons: Importance of Considering the Clustering in the Analysis of Cross-Sectional Studies.

The level of clustering and the adjustment by cluster-robust standard errors have yet to be widely considered and reported in cross-sectional studies of tuberculosis (TB) in prisons. In two cross-sectional studies of people deprived of liberty (PDL) in Medellin, we evaluated the impact of adjustment versus failure to adjust by clustering on prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). We used log-binomial regression, Poisson regression, generalized estimating equations (GEE), and mixed-effects regression models. We used cluster-robust standard errors and bias-corrected standard erro

Comprehensive AI-assisted tool for ankylosing spondylitis based on multicenter research outperforms human experts.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis and treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a difficult task, especially in less developed countries without access to experts. To address this issue, a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) tool was created to help diagnose and predict the course of AS. METHODS: In this retrospective study, a dataset of 5389 pelvic radiographs (PXRs) from patients treated at a single medical center between March 2014 and April 2022 was used to create an ensemble deep learning (DL) model for diagnosing AS. The model was then tested on an additional 583 images from three ot

Potential risk sites and their relationship with dengue cases, Campinas municipality, Southeast Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Among the main activities of dengue and vector control recommended by the Ministry of Health of Brazil is the inspection and monitoring of properties identified as Strategic Points (SPs) and Special Buildings (SBs). SPs are properties associated to hazard, where there is a concentration of suitable egg-laying containers for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, while SBs have greater importance for human exposure to the dengue virus. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of characteristics of the urban landscape on dengue incidence. Specifically, we tested if SPs and SBs affect dengue case di

Disease mapping for spatially semi-continuous data by estimating equations with application to dengue control.

Disease mapping is a research field to estimate spatial pattern of disease risks so that areas with elevated risk levels can be identified. The motivation of this article is from a study of dengue fever infection, which causes seasonal epidemics in almost every summer in Taiwan. For analysis of zero-inflated data with spatial correlation and covariates, current methods would either cause a computational burden or miss associations between zero and non-zero responses. In this article, we develop estimating equations for a mixture regression model that accommodates spatial dependence and zero in

Downscaling epidemiological time series data for improving forecasting accuracy: An algorithmic approach.

Data scarcity and discontinuity are common occurrences in the healthcare and epidemiological dataset and often is needed to form an educative decision and forecast the upcoming scenario. Often to avoid these problems, these data are processed as monthly/yearly aggregate where the prevalent forecasting tools like Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA), and TBATS often fail to provide satisfactory results. Artificial data synthesis methods have been proven to be a powerful tool for tackling these challenges. The paper aims to

Early Warning and Prediction of Scarlet Fever in China Using the Baidu Search Index and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average With Explanatory Variable (ARIMAX) Model: Time Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Internet-derived data and the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and ARIMA with explanatory variable (ARIMAX) models are extensively used for infectious disease surveillance. However, the effectiveness of the Baidu search index (BSI) in predicting the incidence of scarlet fever remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate whether a low-cost BSI monitoring system could potentially function as a valuable complement to traditional scarlet fever surveillance in China. METHODS: ARIMA and ARIMAX models were developed to predict the incidence of scarlet f

State-dependent tDCS modulation of the somatomotor network: A MEG study.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique widely used to investigate brain excitability and activity. However, the variability in both brain and behavioral responses to tDCS limits its application for clinical purposes. This study aims to shed light on state-dependency, a phenomenon that contributes to the variability of tDCS. METHODS: To this aim, we investigated changes in spectral activity and functional connectivity in somatomotor regions after Real and Sham tDCS using generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs), which allowed us to investigate ho

Distributed Quasi-Poisson regression algorithm for modeling multi-site count outcomes in distributed data networks.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies incorporating real-world data from multiple institutions facilitate study of rare outcomes or exposures and improve generalizability of results. Due to privacy concerns surrounding patient-level data sharing across institutions, methods for performing regression analyses distributively are desirable. Meta-analysis of institution-specific estimates is commonly used, but has been shown to produce biased estimates in certain settings. While distributed regression methods are increasingly available, methods for analyzing count outcomes are currently limited. Count
