Escaping Russia, trapped by identity: National identity negotiation in light of ingroup wrongdoing.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused a wave of emigration, with vast numbers of people fleeing Russia due to political persecution or safety concerns. The study explored how anti-war Russian emigrants negotiate their national identity and moral responsibility amid ingroup wrongdoing. Previous research has shown that having a stigmatized identity can lead to self-group distancing. Yet those studies concerned groups that can be characterized as victims of violence or discrimination, and there is a lack of research on identity performance and negotiation of people who represent perpetrator grou

The Power of Words: Rebranding Euthanasia and Undermining Life's Sanctity.

Language shapes ethical perceptions, profoundly influencing societal attitudes toward euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS). Historically condemned by Western medicine as a violation of life's sanctity, euthanasia has undergone a dramatic transformation through deliberate linguistic reframing. Euphemisms such as "death with dignity" and "medical aid in dying" align euthanasia with values of compassion, autonomy, and patient empowerment, often overshadowing its moral implications for human dignity. This article critically examines how these linguistic shifts have influenced the normal

Guilt Feelings in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: An Investigation between Diagnostic Groups.

Guilt plays a role in various forms of psychopathology. However, different types of guilt might be involved in different mental disorders. Obsessive-compulsive (OC) patients are prone to a type of guilt in which the violation of an internalized moral norm is necessary and sufficient, whereas data suggest that depression might be linked to more interpersonal types of guilt. However, the extent to which a specific guilt phenomenology is involved in each condition is yet to be determined. Here we assessed the association between different types of guilt and different diagnostic groups. Two clinic

Korean Version of the Thought-Action Fusion Scale: The Evidence for Its Psychometric Properties.

OBJECTIVE: The Thought-Action Fusion Scale (TAFS) is a self-reported instrument used to measure a cognitive bias, namely, thoughtaction fusion (TAF), in which intrusive thoughts have moral and actual consequences. The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the 19-item TAFS (K-TAFS) in Korean samples. METHODS: In this study, 628 university students and 93 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) completed the K-TAFS and several other psychological scales. Descriptive analyses, correlations, group comparisons, and exploratory and confi

Ethical Perspectives on Body Donation Following Physician-Assisted Death.

The increasing availability of physician-assisted death (PAD) has opened up a novel means of making donated bodies available for anatomical dissection. This practice has come to the fore in Canada, but is unlikely to be confined to that country as legislation changes in other countries. The ethical considerations raised by this development are placed within the framework of the ethical guidelines on body donation promulgated by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists. The discussion centers on understanding the ethical dimensions of moral complicity, and whether it is accept

Should junior doctors strike?

An impasse in negotiations between the Department of Health (DoH) and the British Medical Association in November this year led to an overwhelming vote for industrial action (IA) by junior doctors. At the time of writing, a last minute concession by DoH led to a deferment of IA to allow further negotiations mediated by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service. However, IA by junior doctors remains a possibility if these negotiations stall again. Would the proposed action be ethically justifiable? Furthermore, is IA by doctors ever ethically defendable? Building on previous work, we e

The Prosocial and Antisocial Behaviour in Sport Scale: further evidence for construct validity and reliability.

The purpose of this research was to provide further evidence for the construct validity (i.e., convergent, concurrent, and discriminant validity) of the Prosocial and Antisocial Behaviour in Sport Scale (PABSS), an instrument that has four subscales measuring prosocial and antisocial behaviour toward teammates and opponents. We also investigated test-retest reliability and stability of the PABSS. We conducted three studies using athletes from a variety of team sports. In Study 1, participants (N = 129) completed the PABSS and measures of physical and verbal aggression, hostility, anger, moral

The Theory of Communal-Relational Person-Becoming: A Nursing Theory From the African Philosophical Perspective.

Nursing theory has long treated "person" and "human being" as interchangeable, reflecting philosophical traditions that prioritize autonomy and individualism. Thinkers such as John Locke distinguish the biological human organism from the person, defining personhood through inward-looking psychological capacities. This cognitive, individualistic model has shaped conventional nursing theories that frame the person as a self-contained unit. In contrast, African relational ontologies conceptualize personhood as a moral, communal, and developmental achievement. Traditions such as Ubuntu, Ukama, and

Abortion and Imminent Personhood.

Few debates conjure the angst, emotion, and conviction of the debate surrounding abortion and for good reason. The debate brings to the forefront multiple competing goods, including autonomy and respect for life, while affecting individual lives, the law, and politics in complex ways. Within this discussion, one of the preeminent issues is the status of the fetus: Is the fetus an actualized person or merely a potential person? While this question appears to lie at the heart of the conversation, it is based on a misguided view about the nature of the fetus. In this paper, I attempt to clarify t

Why Are Men More Likely to Endorse Myths About Child Sexual Abuse Than Women? Evidence From Disposition and Situation-Based Approaches.

Research on attitudes toward Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) consistently shows that men are more likely to endorse myths about CSA events, victims and perpetrators, compared to women. Here we present two studies that examine why these gender differences occur. Study one (N = 439) followed a dispositional approach to test the mediating role of empathy, social dominance orientation (SDO) and propensity for moral disengagement in the association between gender and the endorsement of CSA myths. Male participants showed higher levels of SDO and propensity for moral disengagement, and lower empathy, which

Associations of Health Care System Deficiency-Related Patient Deterioration With Burnout, Depressive Symptoms, and Sleep Problems Among Emergency Medical Service Providers: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: On February 6, 2024, the Korean government announced an increase in medical school enrollment quotas, triggering a nationwide strike by medical residents that precipitated a severe health care crisis. Prehospital emergency medical service (EMS) providers were forced to transport patients to distant hospitals, resulting in some patients experiencing symptom deterioration or death due to delayed critical care. Recent studies have examined moral injury-a mental health response to events that undermine moral values-among EMS providers, with exposure to potentially morally injurious eve

Redefining Direct and Indirect Abortions through "The Perspective of the Acting Person": A Misreading of Veritatis Splendor.

UNLABELLED: Despite sincere attempts to interpret Evangelium vitae and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) of Catholic Health Care on direct versus indirect abortion, Catholic moral theologians docile to the magisterium and to Pope John Paul II's teaching remain divided on how the ERDs should be interpreted based on the meaning of the word "direct." The traditional natural law theory holds that the moral object in an indirect abortion involves not only that the abortion is unintended by the subject but also indirectly caused. The se

Understanding university students' AI ethical decision-making in academic contexts: a SOR - social cognitive perspective.

INTRODUCTION: The integration of generative artificial intelligence into higher education has reshaped students' academic practices and blurred normative boundaries around academic integrity. While prior research has focused mainly on attitudes and usage intentions, limited attention has been paid to students' AI ethical decision-making in academic scenarios and its psychological mechanisms. This study examined the associations among AI ethics guidance, academic ethics course experience, moral cognition, cognitive complexity, and AI ethical decision-making. It tested whether moral cognition me

[Kant and the smallpox inoculation].

Smallpox was an endemic, very contagious disease which caused a high mortality rate during the age of enlightenment. In order to counter act this epidemic, smallpox inoculation was developed. This technique consisted in the inoculation of infected pus taken from a sick person into a healthy one in order to prevent the risks of natural smallpox infection. It was in this context that a German doctor in charge of inoculation wrote to Kant twice in 1799, and again in 1800, to ask him if inoculation was morally permissible. Kant wrote a draft of an answer, but it was never completed or published du

Alcoholics and liver transplantation. The Ethics and Social Impact Committee of the Transplant and Health Policy Center.

Two arguments underlie a widespread unwillingness to consider patients with alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver as candidates for transplantation. First, alcoholics are morally blameworthy, their condition the result of their own misconduct; such blameworthiness disqualifies alcoholics in unavoidable competition for organs with others who are equally sick but blameless. Second, because of their habits, alcoholics will not exhibit satisfactory rates of survival after transplantation; good stewardship of a scarce lifesaving resource therefore requires that alcoholics not be considered for liver tra

Killing and Impairing Fetuses.

Could it be that if a fetus is not a person abortion is still immoral? One affirmative answer comes in the form of 'The Impairment Argument', which utilizes 'The Impairment Principle' to argue that abortion is immoral even if fetuses lack personhood. I argue 'The Impairment Argument' fails. It is not adequately defended from objections, and abortion is, in fact, a counterexample to the impairment principle. Furthermore, it explains neither what the wrong-making features of abortion are nor what features of fetuses ground their supposed moral significance. By presupposing the fetus lacks person

Medical ethics and the executing process in the United States of America.

The article focuses on the ethical and moral issues raised by the participation of physicians in the execution process in the United States of America. Discussion centres on two main areas. Firstly, participation in the actual execution, particularly where the method is lethal injection; and secondly psychiatric assessment and treatment of inmates who are deemed not competent in law for execution. It is argued that as an execution is a harm, participation runs counter to the ethics of the medical participation and cannot be justified even on the basis of relieving pain. Treatment of incompeten

Joint religious practices and couple relationship quality in daily life: A strong relationality lens.

Couples who engage in religious practices often report higher relationship quality, yet the processes linking such practices to relational outcomes remain unclear. Guided by the strong relationality model (SRM), we examined whether joint religious practices were associated with relationship satisfaction and relational connectivity through moral elevation and responsible actions. Study 1 analyzed cross-sectional dyadic data from 501 U.S. and Canadian couples (N = 1,002; ages 18-89 years, M = 46.29), and Study 2 analyzed a 7-day diary subsample of 116 couples (N = 232; 1,282 person days; ages 18
