Curvature and range of motion of the cervical spine after laminaplasty.

BACKGROUND: The curvature and range of motion of the cervical spine decrease after laminaplasty. However, to our knowledge these changes have not been studied prospectively. Also, the effect of laminaplasty on the mobility of the occipito-atlanto-axial joints has not been studied in detail. The purpose of our study was to prospectively evaluate the range of motion and curvature of the cervical spine, including the occipito-atlanto-axial joints, following laminaplasty. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of twenty-six patients who underwent cervical laminaplasty. They were followed for a…

Effects of gender of subjects and experimenter on susceptibility to motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that females are more susceptible to motion sickness than males, but these reports have failed to take into account the possible effects of the gender of the experimenter and the subjective nature of reports of symptoms of motion sickness. To deal with the first possible confound, we used male and female experimenters. To deal with the second issue, we recorded gastric myoelectric activity so as to be able to quantify gastric tachyarrhythmia, an objective measure that has been shown previously to correlate highly with severity of symptoms. METHOD: There were 3…

[Effect of Gastrodia on rotation induced motion sickness in mice].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Gastrodia on motion sickness induced by rotation in mice. METHOD: Clockwise and anticlockwise accelerated rotations up to 180 degrees/s for 10 min were used to induce symptoms of motion sickness such as condition taste aversion (CTA), decrease of spontaneous locomotion and impaired ability of space identification in water-maze. RESULT: Gastrodia could improve the response of CTA, increase spontaneous locomotion, and enhance the ability of learning and memory in water-maze in mice after the rotation. CONCLUSION: Symptoms of motion sickness induced by rotat…

Dynamic motion study of the whole lumbar spine by videofluoroscopy.

STUDY DESIGN: Dynamic lumbar flexion-extension motion was assessed by videofluoroscopy. OBJECTIVES: To identify the motion patterns of the whole lumbar spine in normal subjects and in patients with low back pain or spondylolisthesis during actual movement. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Assessment of lumbar instability on terminal radiographs is controversial. Information regarding spinal kinematics during actual movement in vivo is scarce. METHODS: Fluoroscopic lumbar sagittal motion videos were recorded in volunteers (n = 13; mean age, 22.3) and in patients with chronic low back pain (n = 8;…

Effect of motion outside the field of view on functional MR.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of objects moving outside the field of view on functional MR imaging. METHODS: Echo-Planar image sequences were acquired in the sagittal plane of a stationary phantom or of the head of a volunteer subject while a second phantom was moved periodically outside the field of view. The signal intensity changes in each pixel within the field of view were measured. RESULTS: Movement of the phantom outside the field of view produced signal intensity changes in the field of view that equaled or exceeded typical functional activation without the latency that characteriz

The effect of autogenic training and biofeedback on motion sickness tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is characterized by symptoms of vomiting, drowsiness, fatigue and idiosyncratic changes in autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses such as heart rate (HR) and skin temperature (ST). Previous studies found that symptoms of motion sickness are controllable through self-regulation of ANS responses and the best method to teach such control is autogenic-feedback (biofeedback) training. Recent experiments indicated that biofeedback training is ineffective in reducing symptoms of motion sickness or in increasing tolerance to motion. HYPOTHESIS: If biofeedback facilitates…

The effect of an ankle orthosis on ankle range of motion and performance.

Ankle joint orthoses are used for rehabilitation and/or prevention of ankle sprains. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Malleoloc ankle joint orthosis on active and passive range of motion reduction and on a jumping and a figure-eight running test. Twelve subjects with a history of inversion ankle sprain and documented increased anterior translation in a drawer test participated in the study. Active and passive range of motion for inversion was determined with and without the orthosis and pre- and post-exercise. Additionally, performance tests for figure-eight running…

Position of the first ray and motion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint.

The authors present a quantitative analysis of the effect that first ray position has on motion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. A goniometer was constructed to measure the degrees of first metatarsophalangeal joint dorsiflexion with the first ray in three positions: weightbearing resting position, dorsiflexed 4 mm from the weightbearing resting position, and dorsiflexed 8 mm from the weightbearing resting position. First metatarsophalangeal joint dorsiflexion decreased 19% as the first ray was moved from the weightbearing resting position to 4 mm dorsiflexed, 19.3% as the first ray was…

Limited range of motion is a significant factor in venous ulceration.

PURPOSE: Calf muscle pump dysfunction is a recognized factor in chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). We investigated the hypothesis that limbs with CVI have a reduced ankle range of motion (ROM) that may be responsible for the poor calf pump function associated with venous ulceration. METHODS: Ankle ROM and calf pump function were assessed in 32 limbs of 26 adult men. Limbs were selected on the basis of clinical presentation: normal (n = 6 limbs), class 1 or 2 CVI with no history of ulceration (n = 9 limbs), class 3 CVI with healed ulceration (n = 9 limbs), and class 3 CVI with active ulcerati…

Infants' sensitivity to effects of gravity on visible object motion.

A preference method probed infants' perception of object motion on an inclined plane. Infants viewed videotaped events in which a ball rolled downward (or upward) while speeding up (or slowing down). Then infants were tested with events in which the ball moved in the opposite direction with appropriate or inappropriate acceleration. Infants aged 7 months, but not 5 months, looked longer at the test event with inappropriate acceleration, suggesting emerging sensitivity to gravity. A further study tested whether infants appreciate that a stationary object released on an incline moves downward ra…

Treatment of motion sickness in parabolic flight with buccal scopolamine.

Treatment of acute motion sickness induced by parabolic flight with a preparation of scopolamine placed in the buccal pouch was investigated. Twenty-one subjects flew aboard a KC-135 aircraft operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) which performed parabolic maneuvers resulting in periods of 0-g, 1-g, and 1.8-g. Each subject flew once with a tablet containing scopolamine and once with a placebo in a random order, crossover design. Signs and symptoms of motion sickness were systematically recorded during each parabola by an investigator who was blind to the content o…

Motion sickness and perception: a reappraisal of the sensory conflict approach.

This review examines the role of activity and perceptual learning in motion sickness by means of a survey of the two kinds of recent research relevant to this topic. The first is a body of literature concerned not with motion sickness as such, but with perception of orientation and self-motion under the conditions of 'sensory conflict' which are thought to provoke motion sickness. The second consists of investigations into the prediction and prevention of motion sickness itself. A major weakness is identified in the methodologies employed in both types of research: namely, a neglect of the way…

Investigation of anti-motion sickness drugs in the squirrel monkey.

Early attempts to develop an animal model for anti-motion sickness drugs, using dogs and cats; were unsuccessful. Dogs did not show a beneficial effect of scopolamine (probably the best single anti-motion sickness drug for humans thus far) and the findings in cats were not definitive. The authors have developed an animal model using the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) of the Bolivian phenotype. Unrestrained monkeys in a small lucite cage were tested in an apparatus that induces motion sickness by combining vertical oscillation and horizontal rotation in a visually unrestricted laboratory en…

Motion of the knee after condylar resurfacing--an in vivo study.

The purpose of this study was determine the amounts of rotation and displacement occurring in a relatively unconstrained condylar replacement knee, and to compare the motion with a matched group of normal knees. The motion was measured using an electromagnetic device, the 3-Space Tracker, for various common activities, for 25 normal volunteers and 25 total knee patients. The main variables studied were internal-external rotation of the tibia about its long axis and anterior-posterior displacement of the femoral origin with respect to the tibia, as a function of flexion angle or per cent of gai…

Effects of ginger on motion sickness susceptibility and gastric function.

This study was designed to evaluate the antimotion sickness activity of ginger root (Zingiber officinale) and to characterize the effects of ginger on gastric function. Twenty-eight human volunteers participated in the project. Subjects made timed head movements in a rotating chair until they reached an endpoint of motion sickness short of vomiting (malaise III or M-III). Each subject was tested with either ginger or scopolamine and a placebo. A substance was judged to possess antimotion sickness activity if it allowed a greater number of head movements compared to placebo control. Gastric emp…

The reliability of goniometric measurements of active and passive wrist motions.

A reliability study was conducted to determine (a) the intrarater and interrater reliability of goniometric measurement of active and passive wrist motions under clinical conditions and (b) the effect of a therapist's specialization on the reliability of measurement. Randomly paired therapists performed repeated measurements of active and passive wrist motions in 48 subjects who had been referred to one of four occupational therapy or hand management clinics for evaluation and treatment. The data were analyzed with an intraclass correlation coefficient. A posteriori data analyses were performe…

Motion sickness: a synthesis and evaluation of the sensory conflict theory.

"Motion sickness" is the general term describing a group of common nausea syndromes originally attributed to motion-induced cerebral ischemia, stimulation of abdominal organ afferents, or overstimulation of the vestibular organs of the inner ear. Seasickness, car sickness, and airsickness are commonly experienced examples. However, the identification of other variants such as spectacle sickness and flight simulator sickness in which the physical motion of the head and body is normal or even absent has led to a succession of "sensory conflict" theories that offer a more comprehensive etiologic …

Visual field defects for unidirectional and oscillatory motion in depth.

Visual fields for oscillatory motion in depth were recorded for 21 subjects. Near fields were different from far fields in 8 and similar in 11 subjects. Visual fields for unidirectional motion in depth were recorded for 16 subjects for near and far disparities. Some subjects had fields that differed for approaching versus receding motion in depth and/or for near versus far disparities. In particular, for near disparities, approaching versus receding motion gave fields that were different in 5 and similar 7 subjects; for far disparities, approaching versus receding motion gave fields that were …
