Persistent impairments in muscle function and symptom burden in post-COVID syndrome: a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID syndrome (PCS) is characterized by persistent heterogeneous symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection, yet objective biomarkers for symptom severity and longitudinal disease trajectories remain limited. We aimed to characterize muscle function over time in PCS and examine its relationship with symptom burden and neuroaxonal injury markers. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, patients fulfilling WHO criteria for PCS underwent standardized assessments at baseline (BL) and six-month follow-up (FU). Muscle function was assessed using a multidimensional handgrip stre

Recovery Characteristics of Maintenance Training in Soccer Players.

PURPOSE: To determine the recovery kinetics of performance, muscle damage, and neuromuscular fatigue following 2 speed-endurance maintenance training (SEMT) protocols in soccer. METHODS: Ten well-trained male soccer athletes randomly completed 3 trials: work-to-rest ratio SEMT/1:3, SEMT/1:1, and a control trial. Training load during SEMT was monitored using a global positioning system and heart-rate monitors. Isokinetic strength of knee extensors and flexors; repeated-sprint ability (RSA); speed 10-, 30-m, countermovement jump (CMJ); and muscle damage (delayed-onset muscle soreness [DOMS] and

Effects of Levilactobacillus brevis GKEX supplementation on exercise performance and fatigue resistance in mice.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced muscle fatigue is a major challenge for athletes. Our previous study indicated that Levilactobacillus brevis GKEX improved endurance and reduced fatigue in mice. This study aimed to further evaluate the effects of different preparations of L. brevis GKEX on exercise performance and fatigue resistance. METHODS: Eight-week-old male ICR mice were divided into six groups (n = 8): vehicle, BCAA, low-dose GKEX (0.0615 mg/day), high-dose GKEX (0.615 mg/day), heat-killed GKEX (0.615 mg/day), and freeze-killed GKEX (0.615 mg/day). Treatments lasted for four consecutive wee…

Hypothesis: the nasal fatigue reflex.

Natural selection results in adaptations. I suggest that unexplained fatigue may be an adaptive response to nasal impairment. For macrosmatic animals, intact olfaction is necessary to detect predators. In such animals, any reflex (e.g., fatigue) triggered by nasal dysfunction that limited exposure would offer great survival advantage. The "fatigued" animal would remain in its protected environment, unexposed to hungry carnivores, while the nose healed. In humans, clinical syndromes associated with unexplained fatigue (chronic fatigue syndrome, tension fatigue syndrome, allergic fatigue, neuras

Adverse effects of high-fat diet consumption on contractile mechanics of isolated mouse skeletal muscle are reduced when supplemented with resveratrol.

Increasing evidence indicates resveratrol (RES) supplementation evokes anti-obesogenic responses that could mitigate obesity-induced reductions in skeletal muscle (SkM) contractility. Contractile function is a key facet of SkM health that underpins whole body health. For the first time, the present study examines the effects of a high-fat diet and RES supplementation on isolated soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) contractile function. Female CD-1 mice, ∼6 weeks old (n = 38), consumed a standard laboratory diet (SLD) or a high-fat diet (HFD), with or without RES (4 g kg-1 diet) fo

Nerve conduction studies in relation to residual fatigue in Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Many Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) patients recover well, but suffer from excessive fatigue, which may persist for years and reduce the quality of life considerably. In order to determine whether residual subclinical peripheral nerve dysfunction is a possible underlying mechanism of fatigue, we performed standardized nerve conduction (NC) studies in 16 fatigued patients, mean 6.5 years after diagnosis. Thirteen were relatively well recovered from GBS and 3 had stable CIDP. In contrast to CIDP, most NC values in GBS patients were rema

Recurrent Compartment Syndrome Leading to the Diagnosis of McArdle Disease: Case Report.

Glycogen storage disorders are rare diseases of metabolism that are usually diagnosed when a patient presents with recurrent fatigue, muscle pains, and exercise intolerance. In this case report, we describe a patient who presented with the second episode of nontraumatic compartment syndrome over a 10-year span. Because of the obscure presentation, we performed a muscle biopsy, which on muscle phosphorylase staining revealed McArdle disease (glycogen storage disease type V).

The effect of respiratory and lactic acidosis on diaphragm function.

The relative effects of respiratory and metabolic acidosis on diaphragm function are not known. To determine these effects, we compared the … elaxation rate changes, suggesting that intracellular pH may play a mechanistic role in respiratory muscle fatigue. In addition, the absence of a respiratory acidosis effect on a non-diaphragmatic skeletal muscle's function represents another physiologic difference between the diaphragm and other skeletal muscles.

Inter-joint coordination variability during a sit-to-stand fatiguing protocol.

A repetitive sit-to-stand (STS) task is often used as a fatiguing protocol. Although post-fatigue reductions in muscle strength have been frequently used to indicate fatigue, little is known about changes in body movement during the fatiguing process. This study examined changes in variability of hip-knee and knee-ankle coordination during the STS fatiguing course in 15 young (age: 26.7 ± 5.8 years; 9 females, 6 males) and 15 older adults (age: 69.3 ± 5.7 years; 9 females, 6 males). Participants were asked to perform repetitive STS movements until exhaustion or for 30 min at a self-selected pa

Ultrasound-Compatible Electrode for Functional Electrical Stimulation.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a vital method in neurorehabilitation used to reanimate paralyzed muscles, enhance the size and strength of atrophied muscles, and reduce spasticity. FES often leads to increased muscle fatigue, necessitating careful monitoring of the patient's response. Ultrasound (US) imaging has been utilized to provide valuable insights into FES-induced fatigue by assessing changes in muscle thickness, stiffness, and strain. Current commercial FES electrodes lack sufficient US transparency, hindering the observation of muscle activity beneath the skin where the el…

Improving Strength and Fatigue Resistance in Post-Polio Syndrome Individuals with REAC Neurobiological Treatments.

Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) is a chronic condition characterized by the emergence of new symptoms and functional decline in individuals who previously had polio. Despite advances in medical understanding, management of PPS remains challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the use of neurobiological modulation treatments using Radio Electric Asymmetric Conveyer (REAC) technology on fatigue and muscle strength. An open-label study was conducted with 17 patients submitted to four neuromodulation protocols: Neuro Postural Optimization (NPO), Neuro Psycho Physical Optimization (NPPO), Neuro Psycho Ph

Effects of Various Numbers of Runs on the Success of Hamstring Injury Prevention Program in Sprinters.

Studies have not adequately addressed the influence of fatigue, which is considered a major risk factor for hamstring injuries. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify how a muscle fatigue condition affects the success of hamstring injury prevention programs in sprinters. The study subjects were 613 collegiate male sprinters. They employed submaximal/maximal running for a large number of runs and supramaximal running for a small number of runs in daily training. The hamstring injury prevention program had become the most effective strategy in the past 24 seasons of track and field for preventin…

Airflow restriction mask induces greater central fatigue after a non-exhaustive high-intensity interval exercise.

The airflow restriction mask (ARM) is a practical and inexpensive device for respiratory muscle training. Wearing an ARM has recently been combined with high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE), but its effect on neuromuscular fatigue is unknown. The present study investigated the effects of ARM wearing on neuromuscular fatigue after an HIIE session. Fourteen healthy men performed two HIIE sessions (4 × 4 min at 90% HRmax , 3 min recovery at 70% HRmax ) with or without an ARM. Neuromuscular fatigue was quantified via pre- to post-HIIE changes in maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), voluntary ac

Does a subgroup of postpolio patients need different management?

Throughout the 30 years of postpolio syndrome (PPS) research, there have been many puzzling anomalies in the data and not enough information to make sense of them. It is therefore welcome that Winberg et al have examined physical activity in relation to life satisfaction, sex and age. They hypothesized that activity would decrease with age and found the opposite. This result is not so surprising as Ostlund et al found that vitality was associated with older age and that younger age was associated with more pain, increasing physical fatigue, decreasing sleep quality and reducing activity. This
