Limitations of Standard Accessible Captioning of Sounds and Music for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People: An EEG Study.

Captioning is the process of transcribing speech and acoustical information into text to help deaf and hard of hearing people accessing to the auditory track of audiovisual media. In addition to the verbal transcription, it includes information such as sound effects, speaker identification, or music tagging. However, it just takes into account a limited spectrum of the whole acoustic information available in the soundtrack, and hence, an important amount of emotional information is lost when attending just to the normative compliant captions. In this article, it is shown, by means of behaviora…

Therapeutic Use of Music, Dance, and Rhythmic Auditory Cueing for Patients with Huntington's Disease: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Studies have assessed the therapeutic effect of music, dance, and rhythmic auditory cueing for patients with Huntington's disease (HD). However, the synthesis of evidence in support of their positive impact on symptoms is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic literature review to evaluate the potential benefits of music, dance, and rhythm on the cognitive, psychiatric and motor function in patients with HD. METHODS: Two- and three-keyword searches and a manual search identified medical literature published from 1999 through 2019. We considered literature that assessed out…

The effect of music on mood, motivation, and exercise among patients in a cardiac rehabilitation program: A pilot study.

AIM: Exploring the effect of music on mood, motivation, and exercise performance among patients with phase III cardiac rehabilitation. BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation programs address risk factors associated with heart health following acute heart issues or cardiac surgery. In phase III, patients are involved in cardiac health maintenance. Exercise is a major component. Motivating patients to engage in exercise and remain in the program has been problematic. Evidence suggests that music could enhance patient involvement in exercise activities. METHOD: A quasi-experimental design was used …

At-risk elementary school children with one year of classroom music instruction are better at keeping a beat.

Temporal processing underlies both music and language skills. There is increasing evidence that rhythm abilities track with reading performance and that language disorders such as dyslexia are associated with poor rhythm abilities. However, little is known about how basic time-keeping skills can be shaped by musical training, particularly during critical literacy development years. This study was carried out in collaboration with Harmony Project, a non-profit organization providing free music education to children in the gang reduction zones of Los Angeles. Our findings reveal that elementary …

A qualitative motion analysis study of voluntary hand movement induced by music in patients with Rett syndrome.

Patients with Rett syndrome are known to respond well to music irrespective of their physical and verbal disabilities. Therefore, the relationship between auditory rhythm and their behavior was investigated employing a two-dimensional motion analysis system. Ten female patients aged from three to 17 years were included. When music with a simple regular rhythm started, body rocking appeared automatically in a back and forth direction in all four patients who showed the same rocking motion as their stereotyped movement. Through this body rocking, voluntary movement of the hand increased graduall…

Noise induced hearing loss in dance music disc jockeys and an examination of sound levels in nightclubs.

Noise exposure, hearing loss and associated otological symptoms have been studied in a group of 23 disc jockeys using a questionnaire and pure tone audiometry. The level of noise exposure in the venues where they work has also been studied using Ametek Mk-3 audio dosimeters. Three members of the study group showed clear evidence of noise-induced hearing loss on audiometry, 70 per cent reported temporary threshold shift after sessions and 74 per cent reported tinnitus. Sound levels of up to 108 dB(A) were recorded in the nightclubs. The average level for a typical session was 96 dB(A) which is

Musical instrument naming impairments: the crucial exception to the living/nonliving dichotomy in category-specific agnosia.

In category-specific agnosia (CSA) patients typically have more trouble naming animals, fruits, and vegetables than tools, furniture, and articles of clothing. A crucial exception to this living vs nonliving rule involves the category of musical instruments. Patients with problems naming living objects often repeatedly fail to name musical instruments. In CSA it is crucial to equate living and nonliving object lists on object name frequency, complexity, and familiarity. The present study shows, however, that even the most rigorously controlled object lists can lead to erroneous conclusions if …

Donizetti and the music of mental derangement: Anna Bolena, Lucia di Lammermoor, and the composer's neurobiological illness.

The composer Gaetano Donizetti, who died in a state of mental derangement due to neurosyphilis, created some of opera's greatest scenes of psychosis. His letters reveal the clinical progression of his neurobiological illness, which was confirmed by autopsy. One can hypothesize that the composer's brain disease, which led to his psychosis and death, may have had an influence on his ability to create the powerful and unforgettable scenes of psychosis in his operas. In Anna Bolena, he captured in musical and dramatic terms Anne Boleyn's historically corroborated mental disorder during her impriso…

The influence of subjective factors on temporary threshold shifts after exposure to music and noise of equal energy.

The present study examined the influence of subjective factors on temporary threshold shifts (TTS) after exposure to noise and music. Two groups of subjects, those who indicated liking and those who indicated disliking pop/rock music, were exposed to both noise and music on separate occasions. Subjects who liked the music exhibited less TTS following music than noise. They also exhibited less TTS in music than the subjects who disliked the music. Those who disliked the music evidenced greater magnitude of TTS in music than noise.
