"A rare case of bladder myiasis mimicking radiation cystitis-A first case report".

Patients diagnosed with cancer post-treatment are prone to have recurrent disease. Regular follow-up of these patients enables early recognition and treatment. A tissue diagnosis before starting treatment is imperative to avoid misdiagnosis and management. Given their immunosuppression, maintaining good nutrition, body hygiene, and clean surroundings is essential to prevent the most common urinary tract infection to rare urinary myiasis infection. Cochliomyia hominivorax, Chrysomya bezziana, and Wohlfahrtia magnifica are the most prevalent flies causing myiasis in human beings. Risk factors fo…

Oral and cutaneous myiasis in a five-year-old child from Karachi, Pakistan.

Myiasis is a pathological condition in which there is a pestilence of fly larvae feeding on living or dead tissues. This disease is common in the tropics and subtropics of Africa and America and rarely affects humans. Our case report describes a five-year-old boy from Karachi, Pakistan with a history of extraction sockets and incisional biopsy of the left parotid lymph node. Lack of proper wound maintenance led to infestation of maggots both over the overlying skin of the left parotid region and the posterior oral cavity. The plan was wound debridement both outside and intra-orally under local…

Extensive Myiasis infestation associated with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Report of two cases.

Myiasis is the condition of infestation of the body by fly larvae (maggots). The deposited eggs develop into larvae, which penetrate deep structures causing adjacent tissue destruction. It is an uncommon clinical condition, being more frequent in tropical countries and hot climate regions, and associated with poor hygiene, suppurative oral lesions, alcoholism and senility. The diagnosis of Myiasis is basically made by the presence of larvae. The reported cases of oral Myiasis associated with oral cancer in the literature are few. This paper reports two cases of oral and maxillofacial Myiasis i…

Nasal myiasis due to Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826) from Iran: a case report.

Although not very common, human myiasis occurs more in developing tropical countries. A variety of dipterans cause nasal myiasis including the family Caliphoridae. In this report a case of nasal myiasis due to Lucilia sericata is reported for the first time, in a 74-year old patient from Mazandaran Heart Centre, North of Iran. The patient was originally admitted to the Mazandaran Heart Centre due to cardiac arrest and cerebral ischemia with diminishing consciousness. Because of the emergence of large number of maggots from his left nostril and the suspicion of infectious diseases, he was refer…

Oral myiasis: does an indication for surgical treatment still exist? Two case reports.

OBJECTIVE: Oral myiasis is a rare infection for which treatment protocol has not yet been established. This article presents 2 cases treated with a combination of topical application of sulfuric ether and surgery. The reasons for the use of surgical therapy, as well as the possible advantages and disadvantages of drug-based treatments, are discussed. CASE REPORT: Two cases of oral myiasis are described, the first being observed in a 9-year-old child with hypotonic cerebral palsy, and the second in a 52-year-old adult, alcohol-dependent, both showing infection in the gingival sulcus. Both case…

Oral myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax treated with ivermectin and nitrofurazone: case report.

Myiasis is the infestation of tissues and organs of animals and humans by certain dipteran fly larvae. This phenomenon is well-documented, especially among animals and people in tropical and subtropical areas. Oral myiasis is a rare condition that can be caused by several species of dipteran fly larvae. When the larvae are removed from the mouth, the tissues seem to recover with no subsequent complications and no need for further treatment. This article presents a case involving a patient with oral myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax and treated with ivermectin and nitrofurazone.

Nasal myiasis in an intensive care unit linked to hospital-wide mouse infestation.

A large city hospital experienced an infestation of mice combated in part by broadcasting poisoned baits. Months later there was an invasion of flies into the hospital, and 2 comatose patients in an intensive care unit contracted nasal maggots. Adult flies were trapped and maggots removed from the nares of the second patient. These were identified as the green blowfly (Phaenicia sericata). Recent downsizing of hospital personnel had led to the unintended and unrecognized loss of housekeeping services in the canteen food storage areas. A mouse infestation of the hospital occurred, with the epic

[Imported myiasis: 7 cases of cutaneous parasitism caused by Dermatobia hominis flie larvas].

Myiasis is the parasitism of organs and tissues of warm-blooded vertebrates by flies larvae. D hominis is a flie geographically restricted to tropical America from Mexico to northern Argentina. The adult flie, which is not hematophagous, needs to put its eggs on the abdominal surface of hematophagous arthropods which serve as carriers of future larvae which are deposited on the skin of the hosts (mammals, birds and accidentally men) when biting. Seven patients (two females) aged 7 to 35 years old, of different nationalities, recalled receiving mosquito bites, after staying in tropical American…

Studies of wound myiasis among sheep and goats in North Sinai Governorate, Egypt.

Myiasis of man and animals is a real welfare problem of world wide distribution particularly in animal raising countries. Studies of myiasis of sheep and goats in North Sinai resulted in the identification of 21 species of myiasis producing flies. The predominant species was Musca domestica followed by Lucilia sericata and the least abundant was M. albina. In general, sheep were more infested with wound myiasis than goats. The overall infestation rate was high in summer, followed by spring then autumn. The least rate of infestation was winter. As to the different areas examined, the high rate …

Prevention of cutaneous myiasis caused by screw worm larvae (Cochliomyia hominivorax) using ivermectin.

During March of 1991 and 1992, four trials were carried out in the central area of Argentina to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin in the prevention of myiasis caused by Cochliomya hominivorax larvae. In the first trial 24 steers were artificially wounded, in the second and third trial, 36 and 20 bull calves were castrated while in the fourth trial, 30 newborn calves were used. On day 0, half of the animals of each trial was treated with ivermectin (200 micrograms/kg) and the rest remained as untreated controls. None of the treated animals sustained a screw-worm larva infestation, but 3 of 12…

Cutaneous myiasis caused by tumbu fly larvae, Cordylobia anthropophaga in southwestern Saudi Arabia.

Seven cases of human cutaneous myiasis caused by maggots of the tumbu fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga are reported from Asir region, southwestern Saudi Arabia. Boil-like swellings infested with individual fly larvae, varied from one to four and occurred in both unprotected and usually protected areas of the skin. Twenty five fly maggots were retrieved from separate furunculoid lesions on the body surface of a massive case of a 4-year old boy. The present observations confirm that this calliphorine species is not restricted to tropical Africa.

Cutaneous myiasis due to tumbu-fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria.

The occurrence and public health significance of cutaneous myiasis were investigated in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria between June and September, 1981. The findings indicated that human myiasis caused by the maggot of African tumbu-fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga was relatively common and constituted potential public health problems in the affected parts of the state capital. The importance of animal myiasis due to larvae of sheep bot-fly, Oesteris ovis and the cattle grubs, Hypoderma bovis, was assessed and discussed.
