"All the Stars Will Be Wells with a Rusty Pulley": Neural Processing of the Social and Pragmatic Content in a Narrative.

Making sense of natural language and narratives requires building and manipulating a situation model by adding incoming information to the model and using the context stored in the model to comprehend subsequent details and events. Situation model maintenance is supported by the default mode network (DMN), but comprehension of the individual moments in the narrative relies on access to the conceptual store within the semantic system. The present study examined how these systems are engaged by different narrative content to investigate whether highly informative, or semantic, content is a parti

"There's So Much More Support We Could Have Provided": Child Life Specialists' Stories of the Challenges Working in Adult Oncology.

A cancer diagnosis in patients who are parents of minor children is uniquely stressful for both parents and children. Children need developmentally appropriate information and support to help reduce their fears and worries. Child life specialists (CLSs) are health professionals who work in pediatric environments to support children and families with the stress and uncertainty of illnesses. Increasingly, CLSs have been called upon to support children of patients in adult clinical environments. Our objective was to elucidate CLS caregiving narratives related to working with children of adult can

Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse Draw and Describe Their Experiences of Dissociation.

The paper examined how dissociation is experienced and manifested in the drawings and narratives of female survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. Fifteen Israeli women filled out a self-report questionnaire consisting of demographics, traumatic events, and dissociation severity. Then, they were asked to draw a dissociation experience and provide a narrative. The results indicated that experiencing CSA was highly correlated with indicators such as the level of fragmentation, the figurative style, as well as with the narrative. Two main themes em

Young adults' narratives about living with home mechanical ventilation - a phenomenological hermeneutical study.

PURPOSE: An increasing number of children and young adults with complex medical conditions and respiratory failure are treated with home mechanical ventilation (HMV). The current study aimed to describe how young adults using HMV experience their everyday life with the ventilator, their physical impairments and their opportunities for an educational and professional career. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected via narrative interviews with nine young HMV users (3 females and 6 males, aged 18-31 years) in their homes. Two were ventilated invasively, six were ventilated non-invasively and

What narrative devices do people with systemic sclerosis use to describe the experience of pain from digital ulcers: a multicentre focus group study at UK scleroderma centres.

OBJECTIVES: Digital ulcers (DUs) are a common complication in systemic sclerosis (SSc). No existing studies have specifically reported on the qualitative patient experience of DU pain, and our current patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) does not capture the multifaceted painful experience of SSc-DU. Our aim was to examine the patient experience of SSc-DU pain. DESIGN: Focus groups with people diagnosed with SSc who had experienced DUs were conducted using a topic guide developed by people with SSc, experts in SSc and experienced qualitative researchers. Focus groups were continued until d

Narrative Approaches to North American Indigenous People Who Attempt Suicide.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a major problem within North America's indigenous communities. There is debate about the best way to approach indigenous people who have attempted suicide. Conventional methods of cognitive behavior therapy have been criticized for not being indigenous friendly. METHODS: Case files from an academically affiliated, rural psychiatric practice focused primarily on indigenous patients were reviewed for 54 indigenous patients who attempted suicide. Grounded theory methods were used to identify common strategies for approaching those patients who were able to stop attemptin

Humanising medicine: teaching on tri-morbidity using expert patient narratives in medical education.

Expert patients have recognised benefits for both students and patients in medical education. However, marginalised patients such as homeless patients are less likely to participate. Learning from such individuals is crucial for future doctors, who can, in turn, aid their inclusion in society and improve access to health care. A 'humanising medicine' lecture was delivered to Year Four medical students at Norwich Medical School. The lecture utilised narratives from patients with experience of homelessness and tri-morbidity (physical and mental health problems and substance abuse). We used a qua

Therapists' and non-therapists' constructions of heterosex: A qualitative story completion study.

OBJECTIVES: Little research has examined the discourses that shape therapists' sense-making around heterosex. This paper explores the discourses of sexuality and gender underpinning therapists' and non-therapists' responses to a sexual experimentation scenario in a heterosexual relationship. It also considers the value of the novel technique of story completion (SC), in which participants are asked to write a story in response to a hypothetical scenario, for qualitative psychology and psychotherapy research. DESIGN: This research used a comparative SC design (Kitzinger & Powell, 1995). Partic

Going viral in PNG - Exploring routes and circumstances of entry of a rabies-infected dog into Papua New Guinea.

In this qualitative study implemented in November 2016, we elicited narratives about fictional rabies incursions from key employees (n = 16) of the National Agriculture and Quarantine Inspection Authority in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to explore the potential circumstances and routes of entry of a rabies-infected dog, and direct rabies preparedness. Although PNG is rabies free, proximity to rabies-endemic Indonesia poses a risk of introduction and it is expected that an outbreak in PNG would have devastating human health impacts consistent with other countries with similarly low human development

Characterizing the Pain Narratives of Parents of Youth With Chronic Pain.

OBJECTIVES: Questionnaire-based research has shown that parents exert a powerful influence on and are profoundly influenced by living with a child with chronic pain. Examination of parents' pain narratives through an observational lens offers an alternative approach to understanding the complexity of pediatric chronic pain; however, the narratives of parents of youth with chronic pain have been largely overlooked. The present study aimed to characterize the vulnerability-based and resilience-based aspects of the pain narratives of parents of youth with chronic pain. METHODS: Pain narratives o

HIV and tuberculosis in prisons in sub-Saharan Africa.

Given the dual epidemics of HIV and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa and evidence suggesting a disproportionate burden of these diseases among detainees in the region, we aimed to investigate the epidemiology of HIV and tuberculosis in prison populations, describe services available and challenges to service delivery, and identify priority areas for programmatically relevant research in sub-Saharan African prisons. To this end, we reviewed literature on HIV and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan African prisons published between 2011 and 2015, and identified data from only 24 of the 49 countries in

Narrative competence in children with pragmatic language impairment: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Children with pragmatic language impairment (PLI) show impairments in the use of language in social contexts. Although the issue has been gaining attention in recent literature, not much is known about the developmental trajectories of children who experience pragmatic language problems. Since narrative competence is an important predictor of both academic and social success, evaluating narrative competence in children with PLI is deemed important. AIMS: To examine the development of narrative competence of children with PLI compared with typically developing (TD) children using a

Psychosocial impact of early onset dementia among caregivers.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing recognition of early onset dementia (EOD) as a significant clinical and social problem because of its effects on physical and mental health of people with dementia (PWD) and their caregivers. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the psychosocial impact of EOD in family caregivers. METHODS: The study design was qualitative. Nine EOD caregivers (7 women) were recruited at a service for Alzheimer's disease and assessed using semi-structured interviews. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyze caregivers' reports. RESULTS: Five themes emerged from the narrati

Staying healthy from fibromyalgia is ongoing hard work.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic musculoskeletal pain condition. Although studies have reported that some patients can become healthy again, little is known about what they tell about their lives after having FMS. In this study, we interviewed eight Norwegian women who had all recovered from FMS about their experiences when ill and subsequently being healthy. Inspired by narrative methods, we then conducted a thematic narrative analysis. The findings indicate that although women reported that life was better than before, they also reported investing considerable effort in remaining hea

Nobody's child: the role of trauma and interpersonal violence in women's pathways to incarceration and resultant service needs.

With the rate of women's incarceration significantly outpacing that of men's, combined with the fact that the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, there is an urgent need to delineate incarcerated women's pathways to crime and subsequent service needs. This article reports findings of modified participant observation and qualitative research conducted from 2008 to 2010 with women incarcerated in a large, county jail in North Carolina addressing these issues. Thirty life history interviews, nine focus groups, and 60 questionnaires reveal the centrality of trauma, parti

How do children experience participating in a coeliac disease screening? A qualitative study based on children's written narratives.

AIM: To explore how 12-year-old Swedish children experienced being involved in a coeliac disease (CD) screening. METHODS: A qualitative approach was used to analyse short narratives written by children who had taken part in a school-based CD screening. Narratives were written after blood sampling, but prior to learning of the test results. Through an oscillation between the texts, codes, subcategories and four categories, a theme was generated describing the children's experience. RESULTS: The theme ''A Journey towards Confidence'' captures the overall experience of the screening. It illustr

Oral narrative context effects on poor readers' spoken language performance: story retelling, story generation, and personal narratives.

This investigation explored the effects of oral narrative elicitation context on children's spoken language performance. Oral narratives were produced by a group of 11 children with reading disability (aged between 7;11 and 9;3) and an age-matched control group of 11 children with typical reading skills in three different contexts: story retelling, story generation, and personal narratives. In the story retelling condition, the children listened to a story on tape while looking at the pictures in a book, before being asked to retell the story without the pictures. In the story generation conte

Orthostatic panic as a key Vietnamese reaction to traumatic events: the case of September 11, 2001.

This article discusses a culturally specific response to traumatic events: orthostatic panic attacks among Vietnamese refugees. We compared the rate and severity of orthostatic panic as well as the rates and severity of associated flashbacks a month before and a month after September 11, 2001. After that date, the rate and severity of orthostatic panic greatly increased, as did the rate and severity of associated flashbacks. The central role of orthostatic panic as a response to traumatic events is illustrated through a patient's vignette. An explanation of why September 11 so profoundly influ
