Dismantling the Taboo against Vaccines in Pregnancy.

Vaccinating pregnant women in order to protect them, the fetus, and the child has become universal in no way at all. Prejudice in health professionals add to fears of women and their families. Both these feelings are not supported by even the smallest scientific data. Harmlessness for the mother and the child has been observed for seasonal, pandemic, or quadrivalent influenza, mono, combined polysaccharide or conjugated meningococcal or pneumococcal, tetanus toxoid, acellular pertussis, human papillomavirus, cholera, hepatitis A, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, anthrax, smallpox, yellow fever,

An examination of postpartum family planning in western Kenya: "I want to use contraception but I have not been told how to do so".

Postpartum family planning (FP) in Kenya is low due to inadequate sensitization and awareness among women, particularly in rural areas. This paper identifies most widely used types of FP, intent and unmet needs among women, FP counseling and barriers to FP uptake. Focus group discussions with providers, traditional birth attendants (TBAs) and mothers, as well as in-depth interviews identify key themes including preferred postpartum FP, limits to existing FP counseling and barriers to FP uptake. Postpartum FP is common including injectable contraceptives, oral contraceptives, coils, condoms, an

The Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST) index: rational and development.

Serious difficulties in reporting results were encountered when using ICDAS II and PUFA separately in an epidemiological survey in a child population in Brazil. That necessitated the development of a comprehensive but pragmatic caries assessment index. This publication describes the rationale, development and content of a novel caries assessment index. Strengths and weaknesses of ICDAS II, PUFA and other indices were analysed. The novel caries index developed for use in epidemiological surveys is termed 'Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment' (CAST). 'Spectrum' indicates what is considered

Dental beliefs in HIV+ patients with different oral health care needs.

The aim of this work was to assess the score variation of scales 1 and 2 of the DCBS (Dental Coping Beliefs Scale) of beliefs on oral health regarding oral health needs, clinical progression of the viral infection, medical care needs, age and gender in HIV+ patients. The DCBS was randomly administered to 102 HIV+ patients at the "Juan A. Fernandez Hospital", Buenos Aires, Argentina. For each of the 29 items, patients indicated their responses on a five point scale ranging from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree". Oral health needs were assessed through the CCITN (Community Caries Index of

Living with stroke-related visual impairment: a qualitative exploration of lived experience, self-management, and support needs.

PURPOSE: Stroke-related visual impairment (SRVI) is common but often under-recognised and inconsistently supported. While clinical features and acute rehabilitation are documented, less is known about how people live with SRVI over time or whether services meet changing needs. This study examined: (1) the daily impact of SRVI; (2) self-management strategies used; and (3) unmet support needs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen community-dwelling adults in Scotland participated in semi‑structured interviews (7 women; mean age 58.8 years; mean time post‑stroke 29.5 months). Purposive sampling captur

From standard text to simplified learning: a conceptual framework for developing adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health resources in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents in low-resource settings often lack access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) materials that match their litera … in Ghana. METHODS: This framework was developed through an iterative process, including a baseline needs assessment, resource design, stakeholder validation, and evaluation of quasi-experimental methods. A review of existing materials and a literacy assessment identified major gaps in comprehension and vocabulary demands. Content was synthesized from six SRH them …

Final-year logbooks in otorhinolaryngology in Germany - insights from a needs analysis and user experience study of final-year students and supervisors.

BACKGROUND: In an effort to improve the structured training during the practical year in Germany, the German Medical Licensing Regulations have made it mandatory for final-year students to keep a logbook in 2013. This strategy aims to ensure the relevance and review of learning content and to improve the transparency and quality of teaching in the final year. The logbook recommended by the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology is to be used nationwide. METHODS: Our study investigated the acceptance and use of logbooks through voluntary, anonymous online surveys of supervisors and students in

Chatbot for Social Need Screening and Resource Sharing With Vulnerable Families: Iterative Design and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Health outcomes are significantly influenced by unmet social needs. Although screening for social needs has become common in health care settings, there is often poor linkage to resources after needs are identified. The structural barriers (eg, staffing, time, and space) to helping address social needs could be overcome by a technology-based solution. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to present the design and evaluation of a chatbot, DAPHNE (Dialog-Based Assistant Platform for Healthcare and Needs Ecosystem), which screens for social needs and links patients and families to resources.

Guidelines for Caring for the Social Well-Being of Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer in Australia.

More than 1000 Australian adolescents and young adults (AYAs) are diagnosed with cancer annually. Many report unmet social well-being needs, which impact their mental health. Australian AYA cancer care providers lack guidance to address these needs well. We aimed to develop guidelines for caring for the social well-being of AYAs with cancer in Australia. Following the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council guidance, we formed a multidisciplinary working group (n = 4 psychosocial researchers, n = 4 psychologists, n = 4 AYA cancer survivors, n = 2 oncologists, n = 2 nurses, and

The older prisoner health and social care assessment and plan (OHSCAP) versus treatment as usual: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Older people are the fastest-growing demographic group among prisoners in England and Wales and they have complex health and social care needs. Their care is frequently ad hoc and uncoordinated. No previous research has explored how to identify and appropriately address the needs of older adults in prison. We hypothesised that the Older prisoner Health and Social Care Assessment and Plan (OHSCAP) would significantly increase the proportion of met health and social care needs 3 months after prison entry, compared to treatment as usual (TAU). METHODS: The study was a parallel random

Exploring the need for and application of human factors and ergonomics in ambulance design: Overcoming the barriers with technical standards.

Ergonomic risk factors, such as excessive physical effort, awkward postures or repetitive movements, were the leading causes of injuries amongst EMS workers in the United States, of which 90% were attributed to lifting, carrying, or transferring a patient and/or equipment. Although the essential tasks of patient handling, transport, and care cannot be eliminated, the design of ambulances and associated equipment is modifiable. Our aims were to identify the extent of Human Factors and Ergonomic (HFE) considerations in existing ambulance design standards/regulations, and describe how HFE and the

Visual Health and Visual Healthcare Access in Refugees and Displaced Persons: A Systematic Review.

Vision impairment is a significant global health concern. Still, there remains a gap in our knowledge of visual health in refugees. We conducted a systematic review of the distinctive eye care needs of refugees. We screened PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science through February 17, 2017 for studies that focused primarily on visual health in refugees. Risk of bias was assessed using the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute quality assessment tools. 26 studies were included in the final review. The prevalence of blindness ranged from 1.3 to 26.2%. Trachoma was the leading infectious cause. Onl

Sleep Telemedicine: An Emerging Field's Latest Frontier.

There is a widening gap between sleep provider access and patient demand for it. An American Academy of Sleep Medicine position paper recently recognized sleep telemedicine as one tool to narrow that divide. We define the term sleep telemedicine as the use of sleep-related medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient's health. Applicable data transfer methods include telephone, video, smartphone applications, and the Internet. Their usefulness for the treatment of insomnia and sleep-disordered breathing is highlighted. Sleep telemedi
