Unusual giant low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare subtype of appendiceal pathology characterized by epithelial hyperplasia, cellular atypia, and mucinous accumulation within the appendiceal lumen, leading to obstructive expansion of the organ. Representing a mere 0.2% to 0.3% of all appendectomies and approximately 0.5% of gastrointestinal tumors, LAMN poses diagnostic challenges in surgical practice. PATIENT CONCERNS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a patient with the appendiceal neoplasm. A 39-year-old female presented to Jiaozhou Hospital, East Hospital Affiliate

Percutaneous transhepatic intraportal biopsy using gastroscope biopsy forceps for diagnosis of a pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PNENs) are a rare group of neoplasms originating from the islets of the Langerhans. Portal vein tumor thrombosis has been reported in 33% of patients with PNENs. While the histopathological diagnosis of PNENs is usually based on percutaneous biopsy or endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA), these approaches may be impeded by gastric varices, poor access windows, or anatomically contiguous critical structures. Obtaining a pathological diagnosis using a gastroscope biopsy forceps via percutaneous transhepatic intravascular p

Do Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors of the Kidney Have a Predilection for Inferior Vena Cava Involvement? A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

The primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the kidney is an extremely rare neoplasm, the diagnosis of which mainly depends upon histopathology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and cytogenetics. A handful of cases reported in the literature mention about aggressive features of this neoplasm. The purpose of our study was to review our experience in not only the diagnosis and management of the patients with renal PNET but also to highlight its propensity to involve inferior vena cava (IVC) and also present a rare occurrence of Ewing's sarcoma (ES)/PNET of the renal pelvis. The clinical, operative,

Intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas presenting as recurrent acute pancreatitis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The 2010 World Health Organization classification of intraductal neoplasms of the pancreas includes intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasms (ITPNs) and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms, the latter being a rare and new concept. ITPN sometimes cause acute pancreatitis; therefore, distinguishing ITPN from idiopathic acute pancreatitis is important but challenging. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the case of a 72-year-old male who had recurrent pancreatitis for the past 2 years, his diagnosis was idiopathic acute pancreatitis. He was admitted to our hospital with severe acute

Total Laparoscopic Central Pancreatectomy with Pancreaticogastrostomy for High-Risk Cystic Neoplasm.

BACKGROUND: Organ-sparing pancreatic resection is important in prophylactic surgery for cystic neoplasms. There is controversy regarding the optimal surgical approach for pancreatic lesions in the neck or proximal body of the pancreas. Central compared with distal pancreatectomy is technically more challenging, but preserves more functional pancreatic tissue. Because of the prophylactic nature of the surgery and long survival of patients with benign and borderline malignant lesions, surgeons need to stratify greater importance to surgical morbidity and sparing pancreatic parenchyma. PATIENT:

[Is it radical enough? Transanal endoscopic microsurgery for the treatment of rectal neoplasia -- clinicopathological viewpoint].

The transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) provides lower relapse and complication rate for the the surgical treatment of the neoplasms of the middle and lower third of the rectum in selected cases. Hence, it can be an alternative method of the conventional approaches, if it does not compromise oncological radicality. The TEM procedure has been started at the 1st Department of Surgery, Semmelweis University in the fall of 2013. In this short study we have evaluated the clinicopathological characteristics of patients undergoing TEM between September 2013 and September 2014. Fourty-four patient

Pleomorphic dermal neoplasms: a review.

Pleomorphic neoplasms are typically associated with high-grade malignant behavior, but this does not readily apply to primary cutaneous tumors. Despite morphologic features suggestive of malignancy, atypical fibroxanthoma, the classic example of a pleomorphic dermal neoplasm, is characterized by indolent clinical behavior. Atypical fibroxanthoma is a distinctive clinicopathologic disease affecting sun-damaged skin of elderly males. Histologically, it is often ulcerated and dermal based with pushing growth, characterized by a sheet-like and fascicular growth of pleomorphic epithelioid, spindled

Fine-needle aspiration in the evaluation of thyroid lesions in children.

The role of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the evaluation of thyroid lesions in not as well established in children when compared with adults. Hence we aimed to ascertain the utility and limitations of FNA in childhood thyroid lesions. This was a retrospective analysis of all thyroid FNA performed in children less than 14 years of age over a 4-year period (2005-2009). Histopathological follow-up was available in six cases. A total of 77 cases were included in the analysis. The most common cytological diagnosis was lymphocytic thyroiditis (49.3%), followed by colloid goiter (18.2%), h

[Urothelial papillary neoplasms of low malignant potential. Retrospective studies].

UNLABELLED: The knowledge about the evolution and long-term survival of patients with papillary utothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential of the bladder is still limited due to the recent implantation of this term. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with superficial bladder cancer treated at HRU Reina Sofía between 1990 and 1995 were reviewed. We found 50 patients with the diagnostic criteria of "papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential" according to the classification of the 1998 World Health Organization/International Society of Urologic Pathology (WHO/ISUP). There were no

Immunohistochemical evaluation of HER-2/neu expression in pancreatic adenocarcinoma and pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasms.

Although several morphological and molecular genetic studies have implicated various grades of pancreatic duct hyperplasia as precursor lesions to infiltrating pancreatic adenocarcinoma, the identity of preinvasive pancreatic neoplasms remains controversial. In the present study, the authors examined the expression of the epidermal growth factor receptor homologue, HER-2/neu (c-erbB-2), in pancreatic duct lesions adjacent to infiltrating pancreas cancers in a series of 19 cases of pancreatic duct adenocarcinoma. HER-2/neu expression was examined because it has been identified in a proportion o

The expression of human chorionic gonadotropin/human luteinizing hormone receptors in human gestational trophoblastic neoplasms.

Normal human placental trophoblasts have recently been shown to contain receptors for hCG/hLH. The present studies investigated the expression of these receptors in hyperplastic and anaplastic trophoblasts in gestational trophoblastic neoplasms. The results demonstrated that both hydatidiform moles and choriocarcinomas contained receptor messenger RNA (mRNA) and receptor protein. A variety of nontrophoblast tumors, on the other hand, contained neither receptor mRNA nor receptor protein. Choriocarcinomas contained more receptor mRNA and receptor protein than hydatidiform moles which in turn con

A marker for primary choroid plexus neoplasms.

Primary choroid plexus (CP) tumors are rare neoplasms that present in childhood or, less frequently, in adult life. The majority are benign and amenable to complete surgical excision, but occasionally more invasive variants are encountered. Although generally pathologically distinct, occasionally primary CP neoplasms may be difficult to distinguish from metastatic papillary carcinomas or papillary ependymomas. Conventional cytologic markers are not sufficiently specific to permit accurate diagnosis of primary CP tumors. The authors have reported that the CP is the unique site of synthesis with

Primary pure small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Small cell carcinoma is a highly aggressive neuroendocrine malignancy that most commonly arises in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, or pancreas. Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium is exceedingly rare, and its clinical characteristics, diagnostic criteria, and optimal treatment strategies remain poorly defined. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 74-year-old postmenopausal Chinese woman (gravida 4, para 4) who presented with a 20-day history of irregular vaginal bleeding. Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound performed at an outside institution 1 week

Tumor-to-tumor metastases: papillary thyroid carcinoma into a clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid metastases to distant sites are uncommon incidents, most often metastasizing to the lungs and bones. Rates of metastasis to the kidney are particularly low, ranging from 2.8-3.8% for papillary and 6-20% for follicular variants of well-differentiated thyroid cancers (WDTCs). In rare instances, tumor-to-tumor metastasis between two true primary neoplasms can occurs. This medical phenomenon has previously occurred as a clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC) spreading to a WDTC. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a tumor-to-tumor metastasis of a thyroid cancer metas

Clinical features and oncological outcomes of bladder cancer microsatellite instability.

OBJECTIVES: Excellent anticancer effect for solid tumors with microsatellite instability (MSI)-high by anti-PD-1 antibody has been reported. In this study, we investigated the clinical impact of MSI status in bladder cancer. METHODS: This study included 205 Japanese patients who underwent transurethral resection for bladder cancer between 2005 and 2021. The prevalence rates of microsatellite stable (MSS), MSI-low (MSI-L), and MSI-high (MSI-H) were determined using molecular testing. We examined the association of MSI status (MSS versus MSI-L/H) with clinicopathological characteristics and onc

Optimal timing for the first cystoscopic follow-up using time-to-treatment initiation analysis of oncologic outcomes in primary non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

Various guidelines recommend the first follow-up cystoscopy at 3 months; however, no data exist on the optimal timing for initial follow-up cystoscopy. We tried to provide evidence on the timing of the first cystoscopy after the initial transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-BT) for patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) using big data. This was a retrospective National Health Insurance Service database analysis. The following outcomes were considered: recurrence, progression, cancer-specific mortality, and all-cause mortality. Exposure was the time-to-treatment initia
