Four groups of 21 male Wistar rats were given weekly subcutaneous injections of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight for 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks, respectively, and 7 animals of each group were killed in weeks 24, 32 and 40. This treatment induced a clear dose-related increase in the total number of colonic carcinomas. The number of tubular adenocarcinomas, which were mostly located in the descending colon, was clearly dose-related, whereas the number of signet ring cell carcinomas, which developed in the ascending colon, was apparently dose-independent.

Macroscopic morphology, histology and ultrastructure of BK virus (BKV)-induced hamster and mouse tumors were investigated. Groups of animals were immunosuppressed to study the relationship between immune system and BKV oncogenesis. Ependymomas had the highest incidence, followed by tumors of pancreatic islets, osteosarcomas, lymphomas and sarcomas, sometimes associated in the same animal. Invasive carcinoma of the larynx was induced in 36.8% of inbred Syrian golden hamsters from strain B10 15.16, susceptible to this type of cancer when exposed to smoke from reference filter cigarettes for 59-80 weeks. In lifespan studies, outbred male and female Wistar rats were given either technical DDT mixed into the diet at a dose of 500 parts per million (ppm) or phenobarbital-sodium dissolved in drinking water at a dose of 500 ppm. Histological studies were made on the nephrotoxic effect of citrinin on the kidneys of rats, with or without previous treatment with the nephrotoxic chemicals, N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (DMN). Oral administration of 0.02% or 0.05% citrinin alone caused signs of kidney injury but did not induce kidney tumors.
