Hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) has the worst prognosis among head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. The lack of available tumor cell lines poses a significant obstacle to the development of efficient treatments for HPSCC. In this study, we successfully established a novel cell line, named CZH1, from the postcricoid region of a Chinese male patient with a T3N0M0 HPSCC. Short tandem repeat analysis confirmed the uniqueness of CZH1. The cell line was characterized by its phenotypes, biomarkers, and genetics. Importantly, CZH1 cells retained the typical features of epithelial mali

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) is a rare malignancy within the head and neck region, histologically akin to undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It is uncommon outside the nasopharynx, particularly in the oropharynx and salivary glands. Granular cell tumors (GCTs), or Abrikossoff's tumors, are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of neural origin, frequently benign but with the potential for malignant transformation. This case report presents an unprecedented clinical scenario of a 62-year-old female patient diagnosed with an HPV/EBV-negative LEC of the right palatine tonsil, coupled with metach

BACKGROUND: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) promotes the increased uptake of antitumor agents through the administration of permeabilizing electric pulses, thus enhancing chemotherapy effectiveness.
AIM: Our study aimed to describe the tolerability and efficacy of ECT alone or in association with surgery to manage solid neoplasms in equids.
METHODS: Medical records of equids with a diagnosis of malignant tumors treated with ECT alone or in combination with surgery were retrospectively evaluated. Each equid received local treatment within the tumors or the tumors' bed with cisplatin at the dose of

A 68-year-old man previously treated for a large laryngeal neoplasm (pT4 pN0 squamous cell carcinoma) developed osteomyelitis of the medial third of the right clavicle with the formation of a fistula between the sternoclavicular joint and tracheal wall near the tracheostomy border. The clinical course was tedious, required prolonged antibiotic trials, and extended surgical bone resection to control the infection. The final outcome was favorable with wound closure although the patient was left with permanent limitation of shoulder abduction (his shoulder mobility had been normal prior to this p

Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma (ALES) of the parotid gland is an exceptionally rare neoplasm. We report the case of a 57-year-old male with a history of p16-positive tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma who presented 2 years after remission with excessive mucus production and neck stiffness. Imaging identified a left parotid mass, and diagnosis was confirmed through surgical pathology, with molecular testing revealing a Fused in Sarcoma-Fifth Ewing Variant (FUS-FEV) fusion gene. Treatment included radical parotidectomy, adjuvant external beam radiation, and systemic chemotherapy following the Ew

Syringocystadenocarcinoma papilliferum is an exceptionally rare malignant adnexal neoplasm of sweat gland origin, with fewer than 90 cases reported in the literature, most arising within the head and neck region. Periocular involvement is exceedingly uncommon, with only 3 previously documented cases, one of which was confined to the eyelid. The authors describe an 80-year-old man who presented with new onset erythema, irritation, and growth of a long-standing upper eyelid lesion. Incisional biopsy was interpreted as squamous cell carcinoma with papillary morphology. Subsequent excision and his

Lymphomas are a group of malignant diseases affecting the lymphoreticular system. Lymphoma is the second most common neoplasm of the head and neck after squamous cell carcinoma, but the incidence of lymphomas in the oral cavity and orbit is rare. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is less predictable than Hodgkin's but has a greater predilection to extranodal tissues. Non-Hodgkin's incidence in extranodal sites accounts for about 20% to 30%, but in the oral cavity, its around 0.1% to 5%. The rarity of incidence in the oral cavity and atypical radiographic features diagnosing a lymphoma is quite a ch

Squamous cell carcinoma of thyroid is an uncommon, very aggressive neoplasm, having a poor prognosis and poor response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Surgery is the initial treatment of choice, although it often presents as a widespread disease at the time of diagnosis, usually with cervical swelling that causes most of the symptoms due to local infiltration or metastasis. Local infiltration from adjacent tumour and metastatic disease needs to be excluded from other primary epidermoid carcinomas, in order to make a correct diagnosis. This also requires the typical cytokeratin pattern seen i

Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NSM) is a rare benign, inflammatory disease of both major and minor salivary glands, although more commonly reported in the minor glands of the palate. The characteristic clinical presentation can perplex the clinician and may be mistaken for a malignant neoplasm, such as mucoepidermoid carcinoma, as well as invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The clinical and histological similarity between this entity and a malignant lesion may result in unnecessary or mis-treatment. Though clinically mimics malignancy, NSM is considered to be a self-limiting disease, and takes abo

Thymic carcinoma is a rare neoplasm with a poor prognosis. We report the clinical course of a patient who received complete surgical resection after effective induction treatment. A 72-year-old woman with advanced thymic carcinoma (squamous cell carcinoma, stage IVb) was considered as nonresectable due to invasion of neighboring organs and mediastinal lymph node metastasis. Two cycles of chemotherapy, consisting of paclitaxel (180 mg/m2) plus cisplatin (80 mg/m2), combined with thoracic radiotherapy (total 54 Gy) were performed concurrently and complete radical resection could then be performe

Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica (Bazex syndrome) is characterized by an acral eruption with a psoriasiform appearance, which usually presents simultaneously with an underlying neoplasm. We describe the case of a 64-year-old male who presented with a two-month history of pruritic, flaky, erythematous lesions on the palms, backs of the fingers and toes and pinnae, accompanied by bullous lesions. The patient also reported progressive dysphagia in the last six months, and general wasting with a loss of 15 kg. The digestive endoscopy revealed a squamous cell carcinoma in the proximal esophagus. Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and highly aggressive neuroendocrine cancer type that predominantly impacts sun-exposed skin areas in the elderly, particularly the head and neck (41-50%), followed by the limbs (32-38%). There is likely an association between MCC and other cutaneous malignancies, such as cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), Bowen's disease, and basal cell carcinoma. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is the most common concurrent tumor with MCC, especially in sun-exposed regions of the skin. Herein, we present a case of coexistence of MCC and CSCC in the craniofacial

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Distant metastases (DM) in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are in most circumstances non-curable. The TNM staging system is insufficient to predict the risk of DM. This study investigates if the DM risk can be predicted using a multivariate model including pre-treatment total tumor volume for both p16-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and all other sites (other HNSCC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study includes patients with localized pharyngeal and laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas treated with primary radiotherapy from 2008-2017 fr

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy affecting the oral cavity and commonly presents as an exophytic lesion with red or white granular ulcerations. Most diagnoses are confirmed by biopsy and clinical features; however, early SCC has been shown to hide within benign appearing lesions, such as vascular tumors, resulting in missed diagnoses and delay in treatment. The following case report will discuss a patient who presented with a mass in the floor of the mouth which appeared as a vascular tumor on exam and imaging. This was originally thought to be benign based on

OBJECTIVE: Oral squamous cell carcinoma involving the maxilla (MSCC) is a rare malignancy. The aim was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of available literature on local recurrence (LR), overall survival (OS), and associated risk factors of MSCC.
STUDY DESIGN: The Cochrane, PubMed, and EMBASE databases were searched with related keywords and synonyms. The pooled proportions of both LR and OS were subsequently calculated with 95% confidence intervals.
RESULTS: In total, 2638 articles were screened on title and abstract, 131 articles were screened on full text, and 20 were inclu

There has been a sharp increase in the incidence of the human papilloma virus-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, partly due to the increasingly widespread awareness and recognition of this entity. This review assimilates the recent histopathologic classifications, staging systems, rapidly expanding research base and developments in management of human papilloma virus-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and summarizes their implications for routine diagnostic practice. Differential diagnoses and their cytologic appearances are detailed and the utility of p16 staining and o
