OBJECTIVE: To compare the results of stabilising impending and actual pathological femoral fractures using the long Gamma nail with the published results of other methods.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.

Prostate cancer risk in relation to consumption of animal products, and intake of calcium and protein was investigated in the Netherlands Cohort Study. Clinical and laboratory data of 44, previously healthy patients with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections were analysed in a retrospective study (1975-1986). Eighteen (41%) were probably infected in the (sub)tropics. 33 (75%) patients showed symptoms and signs of CMV-mononucleosis: fever, malaise, absolute and relative lymphocytosis with atypical lymphocytes and liver function disturbance without jaundice. A detailed clinicopathological analysis of 223 consecutive fetal and neonatal deaths was carried out in Curaçao during 1984 and 1985; this included careful histological examination of 210 infants (94%). The crude death rate was 34.2 per 1000 total births. Malformation was the principal cause of death in 28 cases, antepartum haemorrhage in 19, hypertension in 25, and asphyxia in 35. Death was caused by problems of preterm birth in 68 cases. No specific cause could be found for 34 deaths. Improvement in the quality of obstetric care might substantially reduce both fetal and neonatal death rates.

Clinical signs include watery droppings, polydypsia and neurologic signs in a high proportion of infected animals.
