Analysis of clinical pharmacist interventions in the neurology unit of a Brazilian tertiary teaching hospital.

It is estimated that around five to 10.0% of hospital admissions occur due to clinical conditions resulting from pharmacotherapy. Clinical pharmacist's activity can enhance drug therapy's effectiveness and safety through pharmacotherapy interventions (PIs), thus minimizing drug-related problems (DRPs) and optimizing the allocation of financial resources associated with health care. This study aimed to estimate the DRPs prevalence, evaluate PI which were performed by clinical pharmacists in the Neurology Unit of a Brazilian tertiary teaching hospital and to identify factors associated with the …

Prevalence of sleep disorders in Parkinson's disease patients in two neurology referral hospitals in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Non motor symptoms (NMS) of Parkinson's disease (PD) are common and can be more disabling than motor symptoms. Sleep disorders can be seen in up to 98% of patients with Parkinson disease. Poor sleep quality has been associated with poverty and race, and yet there has been no prior report on sleep disorders in those with PD living in sub Saharan Africa. We wished to document the prevalence of sleep disorders in PD patients in Ethiopia. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional point prevalence study from July 1 to October 30, 2015 of all patients attending the neurology outpatient de…

Neurology of Nutritional Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Infants: Case Series From India and Literature Review.

We studied 27 infants aged 6 to 27 months with vitamin B12 deficiency also known as "infantile tremor syndrome" in India. All were exclusively breast-fed by vegetarian mothers. Developmental delay or regression, pallor, skin hyperpigmentation, and sparse brown hair were present in all. Majority were hypotonic and involuntary movements were encountered in 18. Anemia and macrocytosis was found in 83% and 71% infants, respectively. Low serum vitamin B12 was present in 12 of 21 infants. Seven of the 9 infants with normal serum vitamin B12 had received vitamin B12 before referral. Twelve mothers ha

Wilhelm Erb's years in Leipzig (1880-1883) and their impact on the history of neurology.

BACKGROUND: Between 1880 and 1883, the famous German neurologist Wilhelm Erb was appointed Professor of Special Pathology at Leipzig University and Head of the Medical Outpatient Department. SUMMARY: Besides the favourable clinical conditions, it was first and foremost the access to large numbers of patients that enabled him to both establish a new, juvenile form of progressive muscular atrophy and to classify various forms of muscular atrophies already discovered into a new clinical entity which he called dystrophia muscularis progressiva. KEY MESSAGES: His summarising these different forms

The current evaluation and treatment of infantile spasms among members of the Child Neurology Society.

The optimal evaluation and treatment of children with infantile spasms is unknown. To aid in the development of a standardized approach to infantile spasms, members of the Child Neurology Society were surveyed to determine common practice. The survey had 222 responders with a responder rate of 18.5%. We found that the diagnostic evaluation and the use of first-line treatments varied among responders. For example, although adrenocorticotropic hormone continues to be the most commonly used first-line treatment for infantile spasms not due to tuberous sclerosis, some clinicians use corticosteroid…

[Development of neurology in Japan and its contribution to elucidate and resolve the sociomedical problems].

Japanese Society of Neurology (JSN) was established in 1960 with 643 members, and in 2009 it has grown up to a big society having more than 8,000 members including 3,600 neurology board specialists. JSN has greatly contributed in elucidating and resolving many socio-medical problems. I will take three topics including SMON (subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy), infectious Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and Minamata disease. SMON was a new epidemic disease characterized by subacute optic neuritis and myeloneuropathy associated with diarrhea and abdominal symptoms. The research committee clarified…

[Dietary advice for treatment of inborn errors of metabolism in adult neurology: principes and limitations].

Special diets can be an efficient treatment for certain inborn errors of metabolism. Regimens applicable in adult neurology include low protein diet (phenylketonuria, homocystinuria, urea cycle disorders, organic acidurias), low fatty acid diets (fatty acid B oxidation defects, adrenomyeloneuropathy, Refsum's disease) and ketogenic diet (pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, glucose transporter (GLUT1) deficiency, refractory epilepsy). Although, these regimens can be very efficient in some instances, withdrawal and nutrient deficiencies are major problems encountered.

Clinical pictures of unknown origin in neurology: past, present and future usefulness of artificial intelligence.

Although, in the course of the last 50 years, the achievements in the medical field have been astonishing, at the beginning of the third millennium a number of clinical pictures are still left without a precise nosographic origin. In the past, the delay in scientific communication was the main explanation presented for the lack of understanding of clinical pictures of unknown nosographic origin. The history of medicine provides excellent examples of this dispersion of human capital, even if the history of clinical neurology presents "exceptions" (the pictures that we now call de la Tourette's …

Human genetics of plasma dopamine beta-hydroxylase activity: applications to research in psychiatry and neurology.

RATIONALE: Norepinephrine (NE) is a key neurotransmitter in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DbetaH) catalyzes the synthesis of NE from dopamine (DA) and occurs in the plasma as a stable heritable trait. Studies of this trait have been useful in psychiatric and neurological research. OBJECTIVE: To selectively and critically review the literature on plasma DbetaH, and on recent progress understanding the molecular genetic basis for its inheritance. Based on this review, directions for future research in psychiatry and neurology will be suggested. METHODS:…

[Adenosine and methylxanthines in the central nervous system--on their significance for psychiatry and neurology].

In the last 15 years the central effects of adenosine and its importance for neurology and psychiatry have increasingly become an object of investigation. Physiology and metabolism of adenosine have been examined by different research groups. The effects of adenosine in the central nervous system and the various mechanisms of these effects have been described by electrophysiologic methods. The inhibition of the release of several neurotransmitters through adenosine has already been described 10 years ago. In this review studies on binding sites for adenosine receptor ligands are discussed thor…
