AIM: The aim of this study was to determine if nevus-associated melanoma differs in characteristics and prognosis from de novo melanoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 118 melanoma patients. Clinical findings were retrospectively evaluated. For histopathological parameters, HE sections were reexamined. The differentiation between de novo and nevus-associated melanoma was based on the histopathological evidence of a precursor nevus. In addition, all analyses were repeated in all cases in which nevus-associated melanoma was defined based on patient anamnesis.

Giant congenital melanocytic nevi are rare congenital disfiguring benign neoplasms with a risk of transformation to malignant melanoma. They often present with various extra-cutaneous features. Porokeratotic eccrine ostial and dermal duct nevus (PEODDN) is a rare, benign, cutaneous hamartoma. Approximately 45 cases of PEODDN have been reported, with little information regarding treatment. We report a patient with PEODDN treated successfully using an ultrapulse carbon dioxide laser.

We performed a retrospective study covering a 10-year period (January 1997-January 2007) on children referred to our unit or followed up for Becker's nevus (BN). The aim of this study was to better define the characteristics of BN in childhood, when this hypermelanosis is more frequent than the limited number of studies might suggest. Our data show that BN in children has predilection sites similar to those in adults, but hypertrichosis is rarer. Sun exposure does not appear to play an etiopathogenetic role. The higher incidence in men reported in adult case studies was not found in children. …

Melanoma may arise in association with and/or simulate the appearance of a cellular blue nevus. The distinction of a cellular blue nevus with atypical features from blue nevus-like melanoma can be difficult. White sponge nevus (WSN) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by white plaques of oral mucosa; it is benign condition with no effective treatment. A case of gallbladder malignant melanoma in a 62-year-old woman is reported. The gallbladder, resected for tumor mass seen on ultrasound examination, revealed neoplastic epithelioid cells with dark granules in the cytoplasm. These cells with pigment were positive immunohistochemically for S-100, HMB45 and vimentin. The patient, affected by dysplastic nevus syndrome, had a history of a melanoma in situ in her left upper arm that was excised 11 years ago. This is only the second case reported to date of primary malignant melanoma in dysplastic nevus syndrome.

A case is presented of white plaques occurring predominantly on the vulvar mucosa of a 28-year-old female diagnosed as white sponge nevus (WSN). WSN is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder involving mucous membranes. It predominantly affects the oral mucosa; however, it has been reported to rarely involve extraoral mucosal sites. We report a case of epidermal nevus syndrome involving the brain in which there is chronic occlusion of the left distal internal carotid artery resulting in ipsilateral atrophy. Orbital and cerebellopontine angle cistern lipomas and a wide cortical developmental malformation are associated with the condition. Epidermal nevus syndrome (ENS) is a sporadic neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the combination of epidermal nevi with significant central nervous system, eye, and skeletal abnormalities.
