A number of palliative care outcome measures are used to facilitate the provision of palliative care. This short article reports the use of one palliative care outcome measure, the Palliative care Outcome Scale, with people with motor neurone disease (MND) living at home. The outcome measure was generally viewed positively by those involved. However, problems with this scale itself point to the need for a specialized instrument to assess palliative care outcomes for people living with MND.

BACKGROUND: Achieving control of hypertension prevents target organ damage at both the micro and macrovascular level and is a highly cost effective means of lowering the risk for heart attack and stroke particularly in people with diabetes. Clinical trials demonstrate that blood pressure control can be achieved in a large proportion of people. Translating this knowledge into widespread practice is the focus of the Hypertension Management Initiative, which began in 2004 with the goal of improving the management of this chronic health condition by primary care providers and patients in the commu

BACKGROUND: As the number of refugees settling in San Antonio increases, so will their health care needs. Due to limited resources and stress, they suffer from acute and chronic diseases, reducing their potential for success in their new host country. The need for proper health education coupled with a stable holistic health care facility is essential for their future success.
OBJECTIVES: In 2009, nursing students began serving the San Antonio refugee population. By 2011, dental and medical students joined to create the student-run San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic (SARHC). SARHC serves the r

Nursing informatics is a relatively new nursing specialty. Recognized by the American Nurses' Association in 1992, this field within nursing has grown exponentially. Once the purview of highly specialized individuals, nursing informatics has now crept into all dimensions of nursing, from domain of advanced nurse practitioners to prominence in critical care nursing. Nowhere is the management and processing of health-related information more important than in the care of the critically ill patient. Fast-paced environments, split-second decision making, wireless communications, monitoring systems

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The rapid development of information and communication technologies has rendered informatics competencies of health care professionals critical in the digital transformation process. Nurses, who constitute a substantial proportion of the health care workforce, are expected to develop nursing informatics competencies. These competencies are crucial for effective adaptation to digital health care environments and for ensuring the delivery of safe care. Therefore, it is important that informatics competencies are assessed with practical and valid tools. The results of such a

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors, such as cutting, scratching, or more severe injuries, are frequently comorbid with neurodevelopmental, intellectual, trauma, personality, and major depressive disorders, complicating treatment and placing added care burdens on hospital nursing staff and advanced practice nurses. Although specific psychopharmacological treatment guidelines and approved medications for NSSI are non-existent, patients are treated with medications approved for co-morbid disorders and behavioral interventions targeting intrapersonal (poor emotional self-regulation) and inte

Despite the widely documented benefits of doulas, institutional and clinician opposition persists. This opposition presents a barrier to doula access and integration, limiting birthing women/people's choices and adversely impacting their experiences and health outcomes. This study explored clinicians' experiences working with doulas to identify factors that can impact interprofessional interactions. We analyzed ethnographic field notes from 7 years of participant observation in one community doula program in the Pacific Northwest (United States) and 11 semistructured interviews with clinicians

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is central to the UK's ambition to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040. Since its introduction in 2008, the programme has significantly reduced precancerous lesions and cervical cancer in vaccinated cohorts. Nurses are pivotal to its success, leading delivery in schools and primary care, addressing parental concerns, countering misinformation and tackling inequalities. Their role extends to advocacy, linking vaccination with cervical screening, and promoting equitable access across diverse communities. This article provides an overview of HPV vaccination, h

A community-based health development programme in Saradidi, Kenya had 126 village health helpers (VHH's) for the 56 villages. These volunteer health workers lived in the community and served a total population of about 43,000 in an area of 225 km2. Each VHH served a maximum of 100 households averaging 4.0 persons. Conditions imposed by the community were that the VHH be perceived to be a mature person, to be compassionate and to have a desire to help people and to live in the village. Literacy or formal education were not requirements. VHH's were chosen and supported by the people who lived in

As transplantation continues to grow as a medical field, shorter hospital stays have become the norm for transplant recipients. From the pretransplant visit to life after surgery, patients need nursing staff who have both transplant care clinical skills and teaching ability. Pretransplant home intervention allows staff to assess and educate transplant recipients much earlier in the patient's disease process. A well-educated home care team ensures continuity and quality of care for transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Allocating healthcare resources to local areas in proportion to need is an important element of many universal health care systems, aiming to provide equal access for equal need. The UK National Health Service allocates resources to relatively large areas in proportion to need, using needs-weighted capitation formulae. However, within those planning areas, local providers and commissioners also require robust methods for allocating resources to neighbourhoods in proportion to need to ensure equitable access. We therefore developed a local resource allocation formula for NHS distric
