Diagnosing metal fume fever--an integrated approach.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high concentrations of zinc oxide fume can cause metal fume fever (MFF). Two cases occurring following the oxy-acetylene cutting of galvanized steel frames are reported. AIMS: To show that integrated working is valuable as secondary health care staff may not be familiar with MFF. METHODS: Site visits by Her Majesty's Medical, Health and Safety (H&S) and Specialist Occupational Hygiene Inspectors to gather information and cooperation with occupational health, primary and secondary health care staff to diagnose MFF. RESULTS: Poor exposure control caused metal fume inha…

Occupational voice demands and their impact on the call-centre industry.

BACKGROUND: Within the last decade there has been a growth in the call-centre industry in the UK, with a growing awareness of the voice as an important tool for successful communication. Occupational voice problems such as occupational dysphonia, in a business which relies on healthy, effective voice as the primary professional communication tool, may threaten working ability and occupational health and safety of workers. While previous studies of telephone call-agents have reported a range of voice symptoms and functional vocal health problems, there have been no studies investigating the use…

Logical consideration on lockout and trapped key interlock for machine.

"Lockout" is an important method for hazardous energy control to protect humans working at a place where they may be injured by unexpected release of hazardous energy. Actually, this administrative control is used in order to compensate for the incompleteness of the ZMS (Zero Mechanical State). This paper proposes the basic requirements for the "Lockout" used for machine maintenance work by applying the "principle of safety confirmation". In view of the above, the relation of "locking up the power switch in the OFF position", "withdrawing and possessing the key for hostage control" and "unlock

Skin protection in the healthcare setting.

Professions of the healthcare setting are at high risk for occupational skin diseases. Irritant and allergic contact dermatitis of the hands frequently occurs, whereas contact urticaria and hospital-acquired infections are less common. Wet work and irritant exposure are frequent due to hand hygiene which is indispensable with regard to prevention of crossinfections. In the healthcare setting, protection gloves are frequently used alternating with protection creams. Since the use of occlusive protection gloves has adversary effects on the skin barrier, use times have to be limited. Furthermore,

Preventing Surgeon Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Pilot Study of the Comprehensive Operating Room Ergonomics (CORE) Program.

IMPORTANCE: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among surgeons are markedly increasing. Several proposed interventions to reduce WMSDs among surgeons have been studied, but few follow an occupational therapy-oriented approach addressing biomechanical, psychophysical, and psychosocial risk factors. OBJECTIVE: To design, implement, and assess the potential of the Comprehensive Operating Room Ergonomics (CORE) program for surgeons, a holistic evidence-based ergonomics and wellness intervention grounded in occupational therapy principles. DESIGN: Mixed-methods pilot study with the qua

Human Exposure to Hand-Arm Vibration from a Surgical Drill During Simulated Spine Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: During spine surgery, surgeons are exposed to vibrations from surgical drills. Increased exposure to vibration can result in neurologic, vascular, and musculoskeletal impairments. To reduce these risks, occupational health standards have been implemented to limit exposure levels. The purpose of this study was to quantify human exposure to hand-arm vibration from a surgical drill during a simulation of a common spine procedure. METHODS: Vibration measurements were collected during three 30-second surgical trials on a fresh frozen cadaver torso specimen using a standard surgical dril…

An enhanced whole-body vibration emission index for railway vehicles.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a concept that is gaining importance in the railway sector. Occupational disorders, such as back pain and sciatica, frequently cause sick leave and have resulted in lawsuits against employers. Railway operators require a clear procedure for specification and purchase of certified rail vehicles that evaluate the vehicle from the point of view of the effect of WBV. However, a review of current standards and studies shows no clear and simple method for defining a vibration emission value, such as that defined in EN 1032 for mobile machinery. This study proposes a sys

Analysis of Required Investigations of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Spain.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are the most common source of occupational health problems in Western countries. In Spain, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) can be reported either as accidents or occupational diseases. When reported as an occupational disease, a full diagnosis is performed, as the compensation system needs the approval of the social security authority and a mandatory investigation has to be performed. Although many methods are available for investigating the causes of occupational accidents, occupational diseases have not been analysed with the same depth, and there is a lack o…

[Occupational diseases related to otorhinolaryngology].

In the German Ordinance on Occupational Diseases (BKV), there are currently 82 occupational diseases listed, of which 18 partially or completely fall within the field of ENT medicine due to the associated health disorders. Noise-induced hearing loss is usually the focus of attention for the ENT specialist, but it has long since ceased to be the only occupational disease. In order to help uncover possible causalities between occupational noxious substances and diseases, it is important that physicians report their own observations and new scientific findings regarding suspected cases to the Ger

Can Occupational Therapy Address the Occupational Implications of Hoarding?

Hoarding is often described as a medical disorder, defined by a persistent difficulty in discarding possessions and associated high levels of emotional distress when forced to part with these. This article will discuss how having a different view of hoarding, seeing hoarding as a daily occupation which provides value, purpose, and meaning and with a relationship to self-identity and life purpose, could offer alternate interventions to support an individual who hoards. The article will consider the components of hoarding activity and how these relate to health and wellbeing and doing, being, be

Prevalence of occupational injuries and associated factors among solid waste collectors in Jigjiga city, eastern Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study design.

BACKGROUND: Solid waste collectors play an important role in maintaining health and hygiene in cities globally. The risk levels are very high in low-income countries since solid waste collectors have low socio-economic status and are exposed directly, unknowingly, and without adequate personal protection to municipal solid waste that contains hazardous materials. Solid waste collectors in Ethiopia are at high risk of occupational injuries due to the manual collection of hazardous solid waste by hand. In Jigjiga city, so far, there has been no study or published research showing the prevalence

The costs and characteristics of occupational injuries admitted to a trauma unit.

Occupational injuries requiring admission to a trauma unit were examined to outline the events surrounding the injury and to examine the costs. Sixty-nine patients were admitted over a 12-month period, representing 4.30% of all work-related injuries attending the emergency department and 4.25% of all admissions to the trauma unit. Most were male (91%), working in skilled trade occupations (65%), with a mean age of 38.8 years. Personal protective equipment was used only by 46% of injured workers who should have been using it. Sixty-one percent of patients believed that their injury was preventa
