BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver condition with no approved pharmacological treatments. Given opium's potential metabolic effects on lipid profiles, blood pressure, and glucose levels, factors known to influence NAFLD, we hypothesized that opium addiction might be inversely associated with NAFLD risk.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between opium addiction during a six-year period (2016-2022) and the subsequent incidence and severity of NAFLD in 2022 among participants of the Fasa Adult Cohort Study (FACS).
METHODS: Adults aged 35-7…

BACKGROUND: In some opinions, opium consumption has traditionally been considered to be a means to lower blood lipids and to put off heart diseases. In this study, the relationship between opium consumption and risk factors of coronary artery diseases, hemodynamic factors and cardiac related functions before and after surgery was evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional study 325 patient's candidate for elective coronary artery bypass grafting were enrolled in a period of 6 months. Opium addicted patients were recognized based on taking history from the patients by an anaesthesi…

A novel open tubular (OT) column covalently modified with hydrophilic polysaccharide, carboxymethylchitosan (CMC) as stationary phase has been developed, and employed for the separations of basic proteins and opium alkaloids by capillary electrochromatography (CEC). With the procedures including the silanization of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTS) and the combination of glutaraldehyde with amino-silylated silica surface and CMC, CMC was covalently bonded on the capillary inner wall and exhibited a remarkable tolerance and chemical stability against 0.1 mol/L HCl, 0.1 mol/L NaOH or some org…

BACKGROUND: Disturbance in the sense of taste can destroy appetite and change eating habits, causing a significant decrease in the quality of life. The use of opium causes a disturbance in the sense of taste. Opium is a narcotic drug that can cause temporary or permanent damage to the taste system, making it a source of concern in dentistry. This research was conducted to determine the effects of opium consumption on the sensation of the four main tastes.
METHODS: This study was conducted in a single-masked and descriptive-analytical manner. The study population included 107 opium addicts and…

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have suggested a potential link between opium consumption and microvascular dysfunction in coronary arteries, which may contribute to the development of coronary slow-flow syndrome. This study aims to investigate the relationship between opium use and coronary slow-flow syndrome.
DESIGN AND SETTING: This retrospective study analysed medical records of patients who underwent coronary angiography at the Tehran Heart Center from 2006 to 2020. It focused on those with coronary slow flow phenomenon (CSFP) or non-obstructive coronary artery disease, excluding patients wit…

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis has an essential role in causing cardiovascular diseases. Various factors affect the risk of coronary artery atherosclerosis, and the increase in the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a primary marker for detecting atherosclerotic changes in the artery wall. Since opioid use is one of the leading social and health problems in many countries, this study aimed to detect the factors influencing the increase in CIMT in opium consumers.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 350 participants of the phase 2 of the KERCADRS cohort study who visited Be…

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported lower pain threshold, spinal anesthesia duration, and level of sensory block in addicts compared to non-addict patients undergoing spinal anesthesia for surgery. Moreover, blood gas and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were likely to be affected as well. The aim in the present study is to evaluate CSF and spinal parameters in addict versus non-addict patients during lower limb surgery.
METHODS: In this case-control study, 22 opium addicts and 22 sex- and age- matched non-addicts undergoing lower limb surgery under spinal anesthesia were included. The CSF parameters,…
