Two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions present a promising platform for advanced optoelectronic devices. Yet, achieving self-powered operation with overall performance metrics remains challenging, especially for devices based on emerging metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPTs), which have historically underperformed. To tackle this issue, we constructed an optimal type-I heterojunction by integrating FePSe3 with WSe2, both featuring Se-terminated surfaces. The resulting built-in potential, confirmed to be 0.18 eV through Kelvin probe force microscope and ultraviolet photoelectron spect

2D ferroelectric materials have recently emerged as a promising class of atomically thin semiconductors capable of integrating sensing, memory, and computation within a single device. Their unique combination of spontaneous switchable polarization, strong light-matter coupling, and van der Waals (vdW) interface compatibility provides an ideal platform for next-generation optoelectronic vision sensors. Coupling ferroelectric polarization with photoresponse, 2D ferroelectric materials such as α-In2Se3, CuInP2S6 (CIPS), SnS, and WTe3 enable non-volatile modulation of photocarrier transport, facil

The growing demand for wearable bioelectronics and energy devices requires reliable energy solutions with sustainable features, multimodal responsiveness, and improved electrochemical performance. Natural biomass-derived hydrogel polymer electrolytes are ideal candidates due to their high conductivity, safety, and environmental friendliness. Herein, we propose a biodegradable gelatin-based hydrogel polymer electrolyte (GBHPE) synthesized via one-pot free-radical polymerization of gelatin, acrylic acid, and acrylamide, followed by ZnO/KOH solution immersion for polyelectrolyte functionalization

The development of compact and selective carbon dioxide (CO₂) sensors is in significant demand due to the severe effect of CO₂ on global warming and human health. Introducing a functional smart material for CO2 adsorption represents an excellent solution for miniaturized selective devices. However, most of these devices operate beyond the telecommunication wavelengths, limiting their applicability for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). In this work, we report a hybrid metasurface - polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) design for a highly selective and sensitive optical sensor. We leverage the

Increasing the demand for object motion detection (OMD) requires shifts of reducing redundancy, heightened power efficiency, and precise programming capabilities to ensure consistency and accuracy. Drawing inspiration from object motion-sensitive ganglion cells, we propose an OMD vision sensor with a simple device structure of a WSe2 homojunction modulated by a ferroelectric copolymer. Under optical mode and intermediate ferroelectric modulation, the vision sensor can generate progressive and bidirectional photocurrents with discrete multistates under zero power consumption. This design enable

Novel portable diffuse optical tomography (DOT) devices for breast cancer lesions hold great promise for non-invasive, non-ionizing breast cancer screening. Critical to this capability is not just the identification of lesions but rather the complex problem of discriminating between malignant and benign lesions. To accurately reconstruct the highly heterogeneous tissue of a cancer lesion in healthy breast tissue using DOT, multiple wavelengths can be leveraged to maximize signal penetration while minimizing sensitivity to noise. However, these wavelength responses can overlap, capture common i

Gastric cancer is a common cancer endangering human life and health worldwide. Early detection and diagnosis of gastric cancer that is normally performed by flexible endoscope can significantly improve the survival rate of patients. However, current endoscopic instruments have some problems, such as limitation of degrees of freedom (DOFs) and lack of surgical triangulation. Meanwhile, the lack of an intraoperative technique for the real-time evaluation of early gastric cancer is also a serious problem. To solve these problems, we have developed a dual-bending flexible endoscopic instrument for

Herein, we report the design and synthesis of four new thiophene-bridged D-π-A configured organic dyes T1-4 comprising different donors, π-spacers and anchoring units, as potential sensitizers and co-sensitizers for DSSCs. The current work also highlights their structural, photophysical, thermal, electrochemical, theoretical, and photoelectrochemical studies, including evaluation of their structure-property relationships. The optical results revealed that the dyes T1-4 display λabs and λemi in the range of 402-461 nm and 556-575 nm, respectively, with a bandgap in the order of 2.31-2.58 eV. Fu

Living systems can respond to external stimuli by dynamic interface changes. Moreover, natural wrinkle structures allow the surface to switch dynamically and reversibly from flat to rough in response to specific stimuli. Artificial wrinkle structures have been developed for applications such as optical devices, mechanical sensors, and microfluidic devices. However, chemical molecule-triggered flexible sensors based on dynamic surface wrinkling have not been demonstrated. Inspired by human skin wrinkling, herein, a volatile organic compound (VOC)-responsive flexible sensor with a switchable dua…

Dehydration is a common condition characterized by a decrease in total body water. Acute dehydration can cause physical and cognitive impairment, heat stroke and exhaustion, and, if severe and uncorrected, even death. The health effects of chronic mild dehydration are less well studied with urolithiasis (kidney stones) the only condition consistently associated with it. Aside from infants and those with particular medical conditions, athletes, military personnel, manual workers, and older adults are at particular risk of dehydration due to their physical activity, environmental exposure, and/o

This paper presents, to our knowledge, a novel micro-ring wavelength selective switch device based on a contra-directional coupler (contra-DC), which utilizes the transparent window formed by the contra-DC to select the single resonant wavelength of the micro-ring resonator, avoiding the limitation of free spectral range and realizing the function of wavelength selection/switching. The desired wavelength switching function is achieved by changing the crystal state of the G e 2 S b 2 T e 5 (GST) loaded on the micro-ring resonator. When the device is in the on state, the desired wavelength signa

BACKGROUND: All living organisms exist in a world affected by many external influences, especially water and light. Photonic nanostructures present in certain insects, have evolved over time in response to diverse environmental conditions, facilitating communication within and between species, camouflage, thermoregulation, hydration, and more. Up to now, only a few insect species have been discovered whose elytron changes its color due to permeation of water (or its vapor) through cuticle.
RESULTS: Here we report on a scarabaeid beetle Hoplia argentea remarkable in its ability to shift from g

In developing neural prostheses, particular success has been realized with cochlear implants. These devices bypass damaged hair cells in the auditory system and electrically stimulate the auditory nerve directly. In contemporary cochlear implants, however, the injected electric current spreads widely along the scala tympani and across turns. Consequently, stimulation of spatially discrete spiral ganglion cell populations is difficult. In contrast to electrical stimulation, it has been shown that extremely spatially selective stimulation is possible using infrared radiation (e.g. [Izzo, A.D., S

This study systematically investigates the potential of the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) MoSi2P4/SnS2 for photovoltaic applications. The heterostructure is composed of two monolayers with a lattice mismatch of 6.42%. Among four constructed stacking configurations, the A4 configuration with the lowest binding energy is selected based on binding-energy calculations. This structure exhibits no imaginary phonon frequencies across the entire Brillouin zone, and AIMD simulations confirm its good thermal stability. It also offers synthetic flexibility and tunable properti

Quantum spin liquids can arise from Kitaev magnetic interactions, and exhibit fractionalized excitations with the potential for a topological form of quantum computation. This review surveys recent experimental and theoretical progress on the pursuit of phenomena related to Kitaev magnetism in layered and exfoliatable materials, which offer numerous opportunities to apply powerful techniques from the field of atomically thin materials. We primarily focus on the antiferromagnetic Mott insulatorα-RuCl3, which exhibits Kitaev couplings and is readily exfoliated to single- or few-layer sheets, and

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems enable three-dimensional (3D) imaging for emerging applications in autonomous driving and mixed reality. The operational wavelength of LiDAR detectors is transitioning from 905 nm to 1550 nm, leveraging the higher safety power threshold and superior coherence of 1550 nm lasers. Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) photodiodes have shown good performance and low cost for two-dimensional (2D) imaging covering 1550 nm, however, been faced two main challenges, including poor spectral selectivity and slow response speed as a LiDAR detector. Here, we introduce a

Acousto-optic sensing (AOS) is a non-contact method for measuring sound using light, suitable for environments where microphones are impractical, such as confined spaces or within airflow. Despite its effectiveness, AOS captures line-integrated sound pressure along the optical path, resulting in signals that cannot be interpreted as those from point-wise microphones. To obtain the sound pressure distribution in three-dimensional (3D) space, volumetric sound-field reconstruction is required. Existing methods require multi-directional line-integrated projection data, typically obtained either by

The pursuit of nanoscale light manipulation represents a fundamental challenge in nanophotonics, where overcoming the diffraction limit is essential for developing next-generation optoelectronic devices. Polariton boundary engineering has emerged as a transformative approach that enables unprecedented control over light confinement and propagation at subwavelength scales. However, the field currently lacks a systematic framework to integrate the diverse manifestations of boundary effects across different material systems and polariton types. This comprehensive review addresses this critical ga
