PURPOSE: This study aims to determine whether OCT-derived rates of change in minimum rim width (MRW) are associated with and can potentially predict corresponding alterations in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) in people with glaucoma.
METHODS: The rates of change between six-monthly visits were taken from 568 eyes of 278 participants in the P3 Study. Structural equation models (SEM) assessed whether one parameter was predicted by the concurrent or previous rate of the other parameter, after adjusting for its own rate in the previous time interval. Root mean square error of approxi

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a retinal imaging system that may improve the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) persons, but the evidence is currently equivocal. To assess whether compensating the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness for ocular anatomical features as well as the combination with macular layers can improve the capability of OCT in differentiating non-optic neuritis eyes of relapsing-remitting MS patients from healthy controls.
METHODS: 74 MS participants (n = 129 eyes) and 84 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 149 eyes) were en

BACKGROUND: In this study, we hypothesized that clinically isolated syndrome-optic neuritis patients may have disturbances in neuropsychological functions related to visual processes.
METHODS: Forty-two patients with optic neuritis within 3 months from onset and 13 healthy controls were assessed at baseline and 6 months with MRI (brain volumes, lesion load, and optic radiation lesion volume) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) (peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer [RNFL], ganglion cell and inner plexiform layers [GCIPLs], and inner nuclear layer). Patients underwent the brief cognitive

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The peripapillar nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thinning in different retinal quadrants or sectors remains controversy. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the pattern of pRNFL thinning in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients to provide a biomarker for PD differential diagnosis.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed and EMBASE to identify studies comparing pRNFL thickness in PD patients and health controls using spectral domain-optical coherence tomography from inception to April 25, 2020. Random effects mode was used to pool mean difference (μm) of the

Growing evidence has demonstrated that peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures (PHOMS) are novel structures rather than a subtype of optic disc drusen. They correspond to the laterally bulging herniation of optic nerve fibers and are believed to be the marker of axoplasmic stasis. PHOMS present in a broad spectrum of diseases, including optic disc drusen, tilted disc syndrome, papilloedema, multiple sclerosis, non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, optic neuritis, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, and so on. We focus on the multimodal imaging features, pathophysiol

BACKGROUND: Peripapillary retinoschisis (PPRS) is often associated with glaucomatous eyes. It usually occurs in eyes with a more advanced stage of glaucoma with obvious optic nerve damage. We report a patient who was found to have PPRS in one eye during a routine physical examination without obvious glaucoma symptoms. Further examination revealed glaucomatous visual field loss and retinal nerve fiber layer defects in the contralateral eye.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old man presented for a routine physical examination. The anterior segment was normal in both eyes. Fundus examination reveale

Preterm birth risk is associated with early softening of the uterine cervix in pregnancy due to the accelerated remodeling of collagen extracellular matrix. Studies of mice model of pregnancy were performed with an imaging Mueller polarimeter at different time points of pregnancy to find polarimetric parameters for collagen scoring. Mueller matrix images of the unstained sections of mice uterine cervices were taken at day 6 and day 18 of 19-days gestation period and at different spatial locations through the cervices. The logarithmic decomposition of the recorded Mueller matrices mapped the de

BACKGROUND: Eyes with peripapillary nerve fibre elevation (pNFE) may have a gap between the optic nerve papillary margin on colour fundus photography and Bruch's membrane opening on cross-sectional optical coherence tomography (OCT). This study was conducted to evaluate the quantification of the height of pNFE in young healthy eyes and examine the relationship between pNFE height and axial length.
METHODS: A prospective, observational, cross-sectional study was performed involving 117 right eyes. All participants (mean age 25.8 years) underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examination involvi

The macular area is important to the detection of glaucomatous retinal ganglion cell (RGC) damage. Macular thickness complementary to peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness can well reflect glaucomatous damage, given that the macula contains more than 50% of the RGCs in a multilayered pattern and larger RGC bodies compared with their axons. Thus, macular ganglion cell thickness parameters recently have been considered to be an effective glaucoma-diagnostic tool comparable to RNFL thickness parameters. Furthermore, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography ganglion cell-inn
