A copper(ii)-dipicolylamine-coumarin sensor for maltosyltransferase assay.

A Cu(ii)-[di(2-methylpyridyl)methylamino]coumarin fluorescence turn-on sensor (Cu-1b) is designed to detect phosphate ions with Kass = 1.4 × 105 M-1 in HEPES buffer. Cu-1b is applied to probe the GlgE-catalyzed maltose-transfer reaction of α-maltose-1-phosphate to α-1,4-glucan with concomitant release of phosphate ions in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

A Case of Hailey-Hailey Disease Managed With Oral Magnesium Citrate and High-Dose Vitamin D3.

Hailey-Hailey disease, or benign familial pemphigus, is a rare blistering disease originally described in 1939. The disease is due to an autosomal dominant mutation in the ATP2C1 gene on chromosome 3, which encodes for an adenosine triphosphate-dependent calcium pump in the Golgi apparatus whose function is to maintain intercellular calcium homeostasis. Common treatments for Hailey-Hailey disease involve calcineurin inhibitors, topical corticosteroids, topical or systemic antibiotics, topical antifungals, ablative lasers, or botulin toxin. In this case report, we highlight a unique case of Hai

A Catalytic and Selective Scissoring Molecular Tool for Quadruplex Nucleic Acids.

A copper complex embedded in the structure of a water-soluble naphthalene diimide has been designed to bind and cleave G-quadruplex DNA. We describe the properties of this ligand, including its catalytic activity in the generation of ROS. FRET melting, CD, NMR, gel sequencing, and mass spectrometry experiments highlight a unique and unexpected selectivity in cleaving G-quadruplex sequences. This selectivity relies both on the binding affinity and structural features of the targeted G-quadruplexes.

Insights in Organometallic Synthesis of Various Adamantane Derivatives with Sigma Receptor-Binding Affinity and Antiproliferative/Anticancer Activity.

Organometallic reactions, such as those involving Grignard and organocadmium reagents, are very useful but require prudent laboratory skills. In many papers related to the medicinal chemistry of adamantane derivatives with sigma receptor (σR)-binding affinity and antiproliferative/anticancer activity, organometallics play a crucial role in the synthetic pathways. In this work, the experimental procedures utilizing Grignard and organocadmium reagents are presented in detail, because these techniques are not analyzed and are important in the rational drug design.

High catalytic activity of heteropolynuclear cyanide complexes containing cobalt and platinum ions: visible-light driven water oxidation.

A near-stoichiometric amount of O2 was evolved as observed in the visible-light irradiation of an aqueous buffer (pH 8) containing [Ru(II) (2,2'-bipyridine)3 ] as a photosensitizer, Na2 S2 O8 as a sacrificial electron acceptor, and a heteropolynuclear cyanide complex as a water-oxidation catalyst. The heteropolynuclear cyanide complexes exhibited higher catalytic activity than a polynuclear cyanide complex containing only Co(III) or Pt(IV) ions as C-bound metal ions. The origin of the synergistic effect between Co and Pt ions is discussed in relation to electronic and local atomic structures o

Proton-induced reactivity of NO⁻ from a {CoNO}⁸ complex.

Research on the one-electron reduced analogue of NO, namely nitroxyl (HNO/NO(-)), has revealed distinguishing properties regarding its utility as a therapeutic. However, the fleeting nature of HNO requires the design of donor molecules. Metal nitrosyl (MNO) complexes could serve as potential HNO donors. The synthesis, spectroscopic/structural characterization, and HNO donor properties of a {CoNO}(8) complex in a pyrrole/imine ligand frame are reported. The {CoNO}(8) complex [Co(LN4(PhCl))(NO)] (1) does not react with established HNO targets such as Fe(III) hemes or Ph3P. However, in the presen

A dinuclear cadmium(II) Schiff base thiocyanato complex: crystal structure and fluorescence.

A new dinuclear cadmium(II) complex, [Cd(L)(NCS)]2 (1) has been synthesized using a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand HL, 2-((E)-(2-(diethylamino)ethylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol, obtained by the condensation of 2-diethylaminoethylamine and o-vanillin, and characterized by different physicochemical techniques. Crystal structure of the title complex was unambiguously established by single crystal X-ray diffraction which reveals that metal centers are connected by bridging phenolato and chelating methoxy oxygen atoms of the coordinating Schiff bases and embedded in severely distorted

Novel rhenium(III, IV, and V) tetradentate N2O2 Schiff base mononuclear and dinuclear complexes.

Reaction of (Bu4N)[ReOCl4] with the tetradentate Schiff base ligand α,α'-[(1,1-dimethylethylene)dinitrilo]di-o-cresol (sal2ibnH2) yields cis-[Re(V)OCl(sal2ibn)], which quickly forms trans-[μ-O(Re(V)O(sal2ibn))2] in solution. The dinuclear complex can also be isolated by the addition of base (Et3N) to the reaction mixture. Conversely, the mononuclear complex can be trapped as cis-[Re(V)O(NCS)(sal2ibn)] by addition of (Bu4N)SCN to the reaction mixture. Reduction of cis-[Re(V)O(NCS)sal2ibn] with triphenylphosphine gives the rare trans-[Re(III)(NCS)(PPh3)(sal2ibn)] and unique μ-oxo Re(IV) dimer tr

[Photoinduced electron transfer between [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and copper(II) ion in composite films mediated by DNA].

An orange-red [Ru(bpy)3]2+ -DNA-CU2 composite film (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) was fabricated on an indium-tin (ITO) surface based on electrostatic interactions among [Ru(bpy)3]2+, DNA and Cu2+ by using self-standing cast methods. The photoinduced electron transfer (PET) properties of the resultant composite film mediated by DNA were studied by means of steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopic imaging and scan electron microscopy. The [Ru(bpy)3]2+ -DNA-Cu2+ composite film with molar ratio of 10:20:1 shows an obvious abso

Porous ionic crystals modified by post-synthesis of K2[Cr3O(OOCH)6(etpy)3]2[α-SiW12O40]·8H2O through single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation.

Post-synthesis modification of a porous ionic crystal proceeded via two steps (acid treatment followed by ion-exchange) in an aqueous solution and a single-crystal-to-single-crystal manner. Compound K2[Cr3O(OOCH)6(etpy)3]2[α-SiW12O40]·8H2O (etpy = 4-ethylpyridine) [1a] is a porous ionic crystal with one-dimensional channels, which can accommodate guests such as water, alcohols, and halocarbons. Crystals of 1a were immersed in an aqueous HCl solution (acid treatment), and the etpy ligand which was exposed to the one-dimensional channel was removed and exchanged with water. Insertion of a single-molecule magnet inside a ferromagnetic lattice based on a 3D bimetallic oxalate network: towards molecular analogues of permanent magnets.

The insertion of the single-molecule magnet (SMM) [Mn(III)(salen)(H2O)]2(2+) (salen(2-) = N,N'-ethylenebis-(salicylideneiminate)) into a ferromagnetic bimetallic oxalate network affords the hybrid compound [Mn(III)(salen)(H2O)]2[Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)3]2⋅(CH3OH)⋅(CH3CN)2 (1). This cationic Mn2 cluster templates the growth of crystals formed by an unusual achiral 3D oxalate network. The magnetic properties of this hybrid magnet are compared with those of the analogous compounds [Mn(III)(salen)(H2O)]2[Zn(II)Cr(III)(ox)3]2⋅(CH3OH)⋅(CH3CN)2 (2) and [In(III)(sal2-trien)][Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)3]⋅(H2O)0.25⋅(C

Analysis of perphenazine and fluphenazine by capillary electrophoresis coupled with tris (2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium (II) electrochemiluminescence detection.

The coupling of end-column tris (2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium (II) electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection with capillary electrophoresis (CE) was developed for the analysis of two antipsychotic drugs, perphenazine (PPH) and fluphenazine (FPH). The parameters related to CE separation and ECL detection, including the detection potential, the buffer pH value and concentration, the separation voltage, and Ru(bpy)₃(2+) concentration, were investigated in detail. Under optimum conditions, PPH and FPH were well separated and detected within 11 min. The linear ranges were 0.1-5 μM for PPH, and 0.1-7.5

New insights into formation of trivalent actinides complexes with DTPA.

Complexation of trivalent actinides with DTPA (diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid) was studied as a function of pcH and temperature in (Na,H)Cl medium of 0.1 M ionic strength. Formation constants of both complexes AnHDTPA(-) and AnDTPA(2-) (where An stands for Am, Cm, and Cf) were determined by TRLFS, CE-ICP-MS, spectrophotometry, and solvent extraction. The values of formation constants obtained from the different techniques are coherent and consistent with reinterpreted literature data, showing a higher stability of Cf complexes than Am and Cm complexes. The effect of temperature indicates

A germanium isocyanide complex featuring (n → π*) back-bonding and its conversion to a hydride/cyanide product via C-H bond activation under mild conditions.

Reaction of the diarylgermylene Ge(Ar(Me(6)))(2) [Ar(Me(6)) = C(6)H(3)-2,6-(C(6)H(2)-2,4,6-(CH(3))(3))(2)] with tert-butyl isocyanide gave the Lewis adduct species (Ar(Me(6)))(2)GeCNBu(t), in which the isocyanide ligand displays a decreased C-N stretching frequency consistent with an n → π* back-bonding interaction. Density functional theory confirmed that the HOMO is a Ge-C bonding combination between the lone pair of electrons on the germanium atom and the C-N π* orbital of the isocyanide ligand. The complex undergoes facile C-H bond activation to produce a new diarylgermanium hydride/cyanid

Rapid and highly sensitive dual-channel detection of cyanide by bis-heteroleptic ruthenium(II) complexes.

Two new ruthenium complexes [Ru(bipy)(2)(PDA)](2+) (1) and [Ru(phen)(2)(PDA)](2+) (2) (PDA = 1,10-phenanthroline-4,7-dicarboxaldehyde) have been synthesized to detect cyanide based on the well-known formation of cyanohydrins. Both 1[PF(6)](2) and 2[PF(6)](2) were fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and their solid state structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their anion binding properties in pure and aqueous acetonitrile were thoroughly examined using two different channels, i.e., UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL). Oxygen reduction reactions of monometallic rhodium hydride complexes.

Selective reduction of oxygen is mediated by a series of monometallic rhodium(III) hydride complexes. Oxidative addition of HCl to trans-Rh(I)Cl(L)(PEt(3))(2) (1a, L = CO; 1b, L = 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide (CNXy); 1c, L = 1-adamantylisocyanide (CNAd)) produces the corresponding Rh(III) hydride complex cis-trans-Rh(III)Cl(2)H(L)(PEt(3))(2) (2a-c). The measured equilibrium constants for the HCl-addition reactions show a pronounced dependence on the identity of the "L" ligand. The hydride complexes effect the reduction of O(2) to water in the presence of HCl, generating trans-Rh(III)Cl(3)(L)(P

Carbon monoxide releasing molecule-2 enhances coagulation and attenuates fibrinolysis by two mechanisms: insights gained with colloid dilution.

Carbon monoxide releasing molecule-2 (CORM-2, tricarbonyldichlororuthenium (II) dimer) enhances coagulation and attenuates vulnerability to fibrinolysis. Our goal was to further define the CORM-2-mediated mechanisms using colloids with known effects on coagulation/fibrinolytic proteins. Plasma diluted 0 or 30% with 0.9% NaCl, 5% human albumin, low molecular weight hydroxyethyl starch (130 kDa) or high molecular weight hydroxyethyl starch (450 kDa) was exposed to 0 or 100 μmol/l CORM-2 before activation with tissue factor (n = 8 per condition). Comment on "New insights in the electrocatalytic proton reduction and hydrogen oxidation by bioinspired catalysts: a DFT investigation".

In the title paper, Vetere et al. reported a computational investigation of the mechanism of H(2) oxidation/proton reduction using a model of nickel-based electrocatalysts that incorporates pendant amines in cyclic phosphorus ligands. These catalysts are attracting considerable attention owing to their high turnover rates and relatively low overpotentials. These authors interpreted the results of their calculations as evidence for a symmetric bond cleavage of H(2) leading directly to two protonated amines in concert with a two-electron reduction of the Ni(II) site to form a Ni(0) diproton stat
