Treatment of Parkinson disease by acupuncture combined with medicine based on syndrome differentiation from the perspective of modern medicine: A review.

As a multifactorial degenerative disease, Parkinson disease (PD) causes tremor, gait rigidity, and hypokinesia, which interfere with normal life. Because the disease is usually discovered in the late stage of complete degeneration of neurons, it can greatly delay treatment and even eventually lead to death. Therefore, the diagnosis of this disease is very challenging, and it is gratifying that substantial progress has been made in the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a diagnostic biomarker for this disease, and genetic and imaging tests have become part of routine protocols

Treatment of pediatric esthesioneuroblastoma with smell preservation.

Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare malignant tumor of neuroectodermal origin and represents the most common cancer of the nasal cavity in pediatric age. The gold standard of treatment consists of en bloc resection, numerous studies have shown as the endoscopic approaches permit good control of the disease improving the quality of life after the treatment. Herein we describe the case of a 13-year-old patient referred to our outpatient clinic with a polypoid multi-lobed lesion occupying the left nasal cavity and imaging that confirmed a left-sided nasal mass without cribriform plate involvement (

[Complex management of macrodactylia of the hand: between aesthetic and functional prejudice].

Macrodactylia is a rare congenital malformation of unknown origin that can affect the fingers or the toes. It is characterized by an increase in the size of all the elements of one or more rays, recognizable at birth or occurring in a progressive manner. Social, aesthetic as well as functional impact imposes early surgical management or even amputations in advanced forms. We report the case of a 18-year old unmarried, left handed patient without a profession, admitted to the Department of Burns, Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at the University Hospital Mohammed VI in Marrakech, with progressive

The role of salivary function in modulating chemotherapy-induced oropharyngeal mucositis: a review of the literature.

Oropharyngeal mucositis is a common and significant complication of cancer chemotherapy and limits the delivery of chemotherapy, affects the quality of life, and increases the cost of care. Oral mucositis caused by cancer chemotherapy is associated with specific agents, but the origin of oral mucositis is poorly understood. These drugs may have direct toxic effects on the rapidly dividing cells of the oral mucosa and on cellular elements of the connective tissue. Microbial flora may play a role in the development of ulcerative mucositis. Chemotherapy may be directly toxic and affect the mucosa

Sudden Cardiac Arrest in an Adult with Anomalous Origin of the Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery (ALCAPA): Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a rare coronary artery anomaly that carries 90% mortality in the first year of life when left untreated. The diagnosis of ALCAPA is rare in adulthood, and it includes a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, including sudden cardiac death (SCD). CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of resuscitated sudden cardiac arrest in a 55-year-old female, who was diagnosed with ALCAPA and underwent successful surgical correction and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation for secondary pre

ADCK4-Associated Glomerulopathy Causes Adolescence-Onset FSGS.

Hereditary defects of coenzyme Q10 biosynthesis cause steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) as part of multiorgan involvement but may also contribute to isolated SRNS. Here, we report 26 patients from 12 families with recessive mutations in ADCK4. Mutation detection rate was 1.9% among 534 consecutively screened cases. Patients with ADCK4 mutations showed a largely renal-limited phenotype, with three subjects exhibiting occasional seizures, one subject exhibiting mild mental retardation, and one subject exhibiting retinitis pigmentosa. ADCK4 nephropathy presented during adolescence (medi

Logistics and strategy of multiorgan procurement involving total face allograft.

The face is the latest body structure to be added to the field of transplantation and the learning curve is ongoing. In the scenario of multiorgan recovery, the face is a nonvital 'organ' structure compared with other life-saving organs. To date, the face has been the first 'organ' to be procured in a multiorgan procurement. A technique for simultaneous recovery of the whole face, heart, lungs, liver, pancreas and kidneys is described. Thirty professionals participated in the procedure, of whom 13 were surgeons. No tracheotomy was performed. A mask of the donor's face was made from a mold impr

A review of nasal, paranasal, and skull base tumors invading the orbit.

Tumors that invade the orbit are uncommon. The majority are meningiomas arising from the sphenoid ridge (66%). Others are bone and cartilage tumors arising from the surrounding bones of the orbit, pituitary adenomas, and epithelial tumors arising from the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. Meningiomas occur more often in women, whereas epithelial tumors have a predilection for men. Meningiomas and epithelial tumors typically present in the sixth decade of life, whereas bone tumors tend to affect individuals in their third decade of life. Patients often present with a combination of ophthalmol

[Pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects of bone lesions in patients with multiple myelomas].

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an uncontrolled malignant proliferation of plasma cells. Today, it is the best studied form of hemoblastomas, but many pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects of this condition await a deeper insight. The medico-social significance of the disease is emphasized by its continuous growth, variable clinical manifestations, low quality of the patients" life, mean life expectancy of 3-5 years, and numerous complications. One clinical feature of MM is bone lesions that occur in all patients as osteolysis (OL), osteoporosis (OP), hypercalcemia, and combination of these diso

HIV-related syndemic pathways and risk subjectivities among gay and bisexual men: a qualitative investigation.

Life history interviews were conducted with 40 gay and bisexual men to identify modes of syndemic experience and risk practice. Out of the interview narratives emerged one major and two minor modes of developmental pathway whereby syndemic conditions are navigated and expressed: (1) a combination of adverse childhood events with later episodes of depression and/or substantial substance use; (2) personal disruption that led to periods of depression and anxiety associated with the stresses of migration; and (3) a disorientation and an unravelling of life trajectory in the transition from family

Anomalous Origin of the Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery (ALCAPA) in an Old Adult.

The anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a rare congenital cardiac malformation. It presents predominantly in infancy and its main presenting feature is myocardial ischemia or heart failure. Survival to adulthood is quite uncommon. If untreated, mortality from ALCAPA approaches 90% in infancy; early recognition and surgical correction are, therefore, essential. With early surgical correction, the prognosis is good. There are two types of ALCAPA syndrome: the infant type and the adult type, each of which has different manifestations and outcomes. In

Xerostomia in patients on chronic hemodialysis: An update.

Xerostomia, or dryness of oral cavity, is relatively common in patients on chronic hemodialysis and significantly impairs their quality of life. Xerostomia is often the consequence of reduced salivary flow resulting from atrophy and fibrosis of the salivary glands, an event that is of uncertain origin. Many medications commonly used in dialysis patients may also cause or exacerbate xerostomia. Its consequences may be serious and disturbing and include difficulties in chewing, swallowing, tasting, and speaking; increased risk of oral disease, including lesions of the mucosa, gingiva and tongue;

Managing Massive Hemoptysis.

Massive hemoptysis is a medical emergency with high mortality presenting several difficult diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The origin of bleeding and underlying etiology often is not immediately apparent, and techniques for management of this dangerous condition necessitate an expedient response. Unlike hemorrhage in other circumstances, a small amount of blood can rapidly flood the airways, thereby impairing oxygenation and ventilation, leading to asphyxia and consequent cardiovascular collapse. Of paramount importance is early control of the patient's airway and immediate isolation of

Coincidence or reality behind Mucormycosis, diabetes mellitus and Covid-19 association: A systematic review.

Mucormycosis is a rare but life-threatening disease with high morbidity and mortality and is difficult to diagnose. Mucormycosis, is a severe but rare fungal infection caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes. Diabetes, use of corticosteroids, metabolic/diabetic acidosis and Covid-19 mediated immunosuppression are reported in more than 70% of cases in mucormycosis patients. Coexisting mucormycosis, Covid-19 along with diabetes mellitus increase the likelihood of mortality. Despite its occurrence since the beginning of the pandemic, there are still unanswered concerns regarding the origin

Giant choledochal cyst mimicking massive gallbladder hydrops in an adult patient: multi detector computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings correlated to gross and histopathological findings.

Choledochal cysts are uncommon congenital anomalies of the biliary tree, commonly presenting in infancy, generally in the 1(st) year of life. Presentation in adult life is less common, accounting for 20% of cases. A 19-year-old female patient presented to the Emergency Department with severe abdominal distension, a palpable abdominal mass, mild jaundice and low grade fever. Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen showed a massive septated cystic lesion filling the entire abdomen with a significant mass effect on surrounding structures. Environment, testicular dysgenesis and carcinoma in situ testis.

The testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS) hypothesis proposes that a proportion of the male reproductive disorders-cryptorchidism, hypospadias, infertility and testicular cancer-may be symptoms of one underlying developmental disease, TDS, which is most likely a result of disturbed gonadal development in the embryo. TDS may be caused by genetic factors, environmental/life-style factors, or a combination of both. Some rare disorders of sex development of genetic origin are among the best-known examples of severe TDS. Among the environmental and life-style factors that are suspected to influence

[Natural history of hip necrosis in sickle cell disease. Apropos of 104 necroses].

The authors have followed 140 patients with sickle cell disease anemia (101 cases) or related hemoglobinopathies (39 cases). Among them hip involvement was noted in 55 (104 hips). Forty three times the hip involvement occurred in childhood and twelve times in adult life. When the necrosis appeared in childhood (84 hips) the average age was twelve. The deformity involved the femoral head (coxa plana, coxa magna) as well as the neck (short neck, coxa vara). After an average follow-up of nineteen years, clinical and radiological examinations evidenced 64 functional impairments and 25 arthrosis, 1

EBV-Driven Lymphoproliferative Disorders and Lymphomas of the Gastrointestinal Tract: A Spectrum of Entities with a Common Denominator (Part 3).

EBV is the first known oncogenic virus involved in the development of several tumors. The majority of the global population are infected with the virus early in life and the virus persists throughout life, in a latent stage, and usually within B lymphocytes. Despite the worldwide diffusion of EBV infection, EBV-associated diseases develop in only in a small subset of individuals often when conditions of immunosuppression disrupt the balance between the infection and host immune system. EBV-driven lymphoid proliferations are either of B-cell or T/NK-cell origin, and range from disorders with an
