Parasites of Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) population. Part I. Coccidia (Protozoa, Apicomplexa).

Coccidia infection in Chaffinch population in Mazurian Lakeland was studied. Birds were caught in mist nets from June to September and droppings were collected after defecation. Prevalence of infection was high -80% of Chaffinches excreted oocysts of Isospora sp. Intensity of oocysts' production varied depending on the time of the day and therefore coccidia prevalence in Chaffinch should be best detectable in birds caught after midday.

Critical resources that influence habitat selection decisions by gastrointestinal helminth parasites.

Habitat selection may be the basis of some of the most exciting questions in behavioural ecology today, but parasites are being excluded from this debate. Parasites are not aberrant; they form a large proportion of the diversity of life on earth, and one estimate suggests that parasitism is more common than all other feeding strategies combined. We still do not understand the adaptive value of habitat selection behaviours in these organisms, even though the literature is full of examples of parasites migrating and navigating through hosts to their specific habitats. Parasites must make the sam…

[PCR for detection and characterization of parasites (Leishmania, Echinococcus, Microsporodia, Giardia)].

The application of PCR for the diagnosis and the characterisation of parasites is discussed using four examples. (1) A PCR assay that was developed for the detection of Leishmania was shown to be as highly sensitive as in vitro cultivation of the parasites from lymph node aspirates and bone marrow biopsies. (2) Single eggs of Echinococcus multilocularis can principally be detected and identified by PCR. However, a cumbersome sample preparation is inevitable in order to remove PCR-inhibitory substances present in fox faeces. (3) Analysis of the amplified SSU rRNA gene of Encephalitozoon-like is…

The impact of gastrointestinal parasites on protein-energy malnutrition in man.

There is no doubt that at high intensity of infection, intestinal parasites can cause severe illness and the death of their hosts. Even with the high prevalence of these infections, however, such severe cases are rare and the norm is for low to moderate numbers of parasites which cause few if any overt symptoms. Nevertheless, it has been argued that by causing subtle reductions in appetite, absorption, digestion and acute-phase status and increasing intestinal nutrient losses, these low-level but long-term infections could be responsible for the persistent, poor nutritional status of so many c…

Lesions associated with pulmonary parasites in bobcats (Felis rufus) from Arkansas.

Two of five bobcats (Felis rufus) from southwestern Arkansas had natural pulmonary infections of Paragonimus kellicotti and Filaroides rostratus. Pairs of P. kellicotti were found in spherical cyst-like structures approximately 1 cm in diameter. Filaroides rostratus were seen as serpentine pale white areas on the pleural surface and also firmly embedded in fibrous capsules in the pulmonary parenchyma. Histologic lesions associated with the presence of these parasites consisted primarily of a verminous bronchitis. Clinical signs or compromised pulmonary function were not associated with these i…

Parasites of the stomach in donkeys of the highveld of Zimbabwe.

Fourteen donkeys from a communal area of the Zimbabwean highveld were examined for stomach parasites during July and November of 1986 and January and April of 1987. All 14 animals were infected. Habronema muscae occurred in 12, Draschia megastoma in 11, H. majus in 9, Trichostrongylus axei in 9, Gasterophilus intestinalis in 14 and G. nasalis in 1 donkey. The lowest level of infection was in January for the helminths and in April for Gasterophilus larvae. The peak burdens of parasites were in July for Habronema spp. and in November for D. megastoma and Gasterophilus larvae. Infections with spi…

[Human intestinal parasites in Subsaharan Africa. III. Pemba Island (Zanzibar-Tanzania)].

The authors carried out a coprological survey in Pemba Island, analysing, by modified Ritchie technique, 413 stools samples. The specimens were collected among the population from apparently healthy subjects chosen at random in a number equal to 2% of the whole population. The examined subjects were divided in 3 age groups, 211 were males, 202 females. The following results were obtained (in order of prevalence): a) Protozoa: Entamoeba coli 35.6%, Giardia intestinalis 5.6%, Endolimax nana 4.3%, E. histolytica 3.1%, Chilomastix mesnili 2.9%, Iodamoeba buetschlii 4.3%, E. hartmanni 0.7%; b) Helm

Arthropod parasites of some wild animals in South Africa and Namibia.

Earlier research on the parasites of wild animals in South Africa is reviewed and the findings of more recent research discussed. The life cycles of various gasterophilid and oestrid fly species are described and the seasonal abundance of their larvae in their zebra and antelope hosts is considered. The seasonal abundance of fleas, lice and ixodid ticks on their hosts is given and the role played by both small and large mammals and some birds in the maintenance of tick populations is described. Factors contributing to severe parasitism of wild animals are listed and the chemical and biological…

The prevalence and intensity of intestinal parasites in two Somalian communities.

About 85% of the population of two Somali communities harboured soil-transmitted intestinal nematodes and/or protozoa. The commonest parasite (75% in the Lafoole institution and 59% in the Afgoye institution) was Trichuris trichiura. Mixed infections were common. The source of infection is contaminated fields around dwelling quarters, because of indiscriminate defaecation. One of the factors responsible for the higher incidence of hookworm in Lafoole (45%) compared with Afgoye (1.5%) may be the different soil character of the surrounding fields.

Invasion of erythrocytes by malaria parasites: a cellular and molecular overview.

Studies on the morphology, cell biology, and immunology of invasion have characterized events that are now being studied at the molecular le … and a trypsin-sensitive erythrocyte membrane component are important for invasion by P. falciparum parasites. There is evidence that at least two ligands are involved in invasion. For P. knowlesi there is a ligand for attachment, common to both Duffy-negative and Duffy-positive human erythrocytes, and a second ligand for invasion, which is found only on Du …

The efficacy of ivermectin against helminth and arthropod parasites of impala.

The efficacy of ivermectin, injected subcutaneously at a dosage rate of 200 mcg/kg live mass, was determined against nematodes, ixodid ticks and lice infestations acquired by free-living impala, Aepyceros melampus, in the Kruger National Park. Although the parasite burdens of the untreated control animals varied considerably, ivermectin appeared to be highly effective against 7 nematode species and effective against 3 others. Of the 4 tick species recovered, only Boophilus decoloratus appeared to have been affected. In the case of the lice infestations, ivermectin was highly effective against

Correlation between susceptibility to malaria and babesia parasites and to endotoxicity.

Adult (185g) rats are about twice as sensitive to the harmful effects of injected endotoxin as are younger (65g) rats. This relationship correlates with an earlier report on the densities of Plasmodium berghei at which deaths occur in rats of these two age groups. Similarly lizards, which withstand very high parasitaemias of malaria parasites, are refractory to very large doses of endotoxin. This correlation appears to hold for malaria and babesiosis in all host species for which information is available, with man, for instance, very sensitive to these infections and to injected endotoxin. It …

Serum and antral gastrin levels in rats infected with intestinal parasites.

Serum and antral gastrin were measured in rats infected with either Trichinella spiralis or Hymenolepis diminuta as a step in testing the hypothesis that parasites change certain aspects of host physiology by altering gastrointestinal (GI) hormone levels or responses to GI hormones. Parasitism with T. spiralis was associated with inflammatory changes in the small bowel mucosa and with a significant increase in serum gastrin. Neither changes in hormone level nor inflammation were induced in tapeworm-infected rats. These results reveal the capacity of tissue penetrating parasites to alter the le…
