INTRODUCTION: Recent advances in osteoimmunology have illuminated the significant role of neuroimmune interactions in bone and joint health. The neuroimmune system critically regulates bone cell function through a complex network of molecular mediators - including signals from the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, cortisol and other hormones, and growth factors. These mediators interact within a nonlinear network where each component can influence others reciprocally, with the brain serving as a central coordinator.

Infant autonomic reactivity to stress is a potential predictor of later life health complications, but research has not sufficiently examined sympathetic activity, controlled for effects of physical activity and respiration, or studied associations among autonomic adjustments, cardiac activity, and affect in infants. We studied 278 infants during the repeated Still-Face Paradigm, a standardized stressor, while monitoring cardiac activity (ECG) and respiratory pattern (respiratory inductance plethysmography). Video ratings of physical activity and affect were also performed. Respiratory sinus a

Numerous studies have demonstrated that short-term air pollution exposure causes cardiac autonomic imbalance as measured by heart rate variability (HRV). We previously showed that a single exposure to acrolein, a ubiquitous gaseous component of air pollution, not only causes autonomic imbalance, but also increases arrhythmia through transient receptor potential A1 (TRPA1) cation channels. Thus, the goal of this study was to characterize acrolein-induced autonomic changes in both normal and TRPA1-knockout mice (KO). Conscious, unrestrained C57BL/6 (WT) and KO mice were exposed to 3 ppm acrolein

AIM: The Performance of an oncological low anterior rectum resection with preservation of the sympathic and parasympathic nerves is illustrated.
INDICATION: The total mesorectal excision (TME) by Robert Heald et al. is the gold standard for rectal cancer operations which has lowered drastically the local recurrence rate. As the survival data improve, the new focus is the postoperative quality of life with preserving of the bladder and sexual function.
METHOD: We demonstrate an anterior rectal cancer operation with preserving of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves step by step.

The present experiments were designed to examine the site of action of the alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist, clonidine, and the alpha 2-antagonist, yohimbine, on the salivary secretion response to parasympathetic and sympathetic stimulation in the cat submandibular gland (SMG). The parasympathetic reflex salivary secretion was significantly affected by both clonidine and yohimbine (clonidine reduced and yohimbine increased the amount of saliva secreted) while the reflex vasodilator response was not affected by either agent. No degree of methacholine-induced salivation was affected by prior treatme

Exploration of photoplethysmography (PPG), a technique that can be translated to the clinic, has the potential to assess the autonomic nervous system (ANS) through heart rate variable (HRV) in pregnant individuals. This novel study explores the complexity of mental health of individuals in a clinical sample responding to a task in late pregnancy; finding those with several types of past or current anxiety disorders, greater trait anxiety, or greater exposure to childhood traumatic events had significantly different HRV findings from the others in the cohort. Lower high frequency (HF), a measur

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease with a prevalence of 0.5-1% in Western populations. Conventionally, it is treated with therapeutic interventions that include corticosteroids, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, and biological agents. RA exerts a significant socio-economic burden and despite the use of existing treatments some patients end up with disabling symptoms. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a brain-body interface that serves to regulate homeostasis by integrating the external environment with the internal milieu. The main neural subs

During fasting, profound changes in the regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis occur in order to save energy and limit catabolism. In this setting, serum T3 and T4 are decreased without an appropriate TSH and TRH response reflecting central down-regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis. Hepatic thyroid hormone (TH) metabolism is also affected by fasting, because type 3 deiodinase (D3) is increased, which is mediated by serum leptin concentrations. A recent study showed that fasting-induced changes in liver TH sulfotransferases (Sults) and uridine 5'-diphospho-glucur

Reflex vagal hypertonia (RVH) has been identified as a possible cause of sudden unexpected death in infants during the first year of life. Homatropine methylbromide (HM) is an anticholinergic drug known to inhibit muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, thus affecting the parasympathetic nervous system. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of HM on 24-h Holter electrocardiographic signs of RVH (pre-HM treatment vs post-HM treatment; post-HM treatment vs a control group of healthy infants). A total of 50 patients (mean age, 6.1 ± 2.7 months; 28 males, 22 females; 12 born pre-…

BACKGROUND: Benefits of moderate endurance training include increases in parasympathetic activity and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and a relative decrease in sympathetic tone. However, the effect of very intensive training load on neural cardiovascular regulation is not known. We tested the hypothesis that strenuous endurance training, like in high-performance athletes, would enhance sympathetic activation and reduce vagal inhibition.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied the entire Italian junior national team of rowing (n=7) at increasing training loads up to 75% and 100% of maximum, the latter a

Understanding the mechanisms of immune activation and deactivation is paramount. A host must initiate effective immunity against pathogenic … ctivation, whereas the liver is responsible for immune deactivation. Similarly, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems have opposing functions in immune modulation, with the sympathetic system promoting pro-inflammatory responses and the parasympathetic system facilitating anti-inflammatory processes. Furthermore, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and glucocortico …

Restraint stress (RS) is an unavoidable stress model that triggers activation of the autonomic nervous system, endocrine activity, and behavioral changes in rodents. Furthermore, RS induces secretion of oxytocin into the bloodstream, indicating a possible physiological role in the stress response in this model. The presence of oxytocin receptors in vessels and heart favors this possible idea. However, the role of oxytocin secreted in RS and effects on the cardiovascular system are still unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of oxytocin on cardiovascular effects during RS

BACKGROUND: Acromegaly is a rare, chronic disease that involves structural and functional abnormalities of the cardiovascular system. Acromegaly likely affects interactions between the cardiovascular system and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Therefore, assessing the relationship between sympathetic-parasympathetic balance by analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) and the hemodynamic profile via impedance cardiography (ICG) may be useful in learning the exact nature of interactions between the ANS and the cardiovascular system. The purpose of this study was to assess a possible association

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to identify the aspects of cardiac physiology associated with depressive disorder early in life by examining measures of autonomic cardiac control in a community-based sample of depressed adolescents at an early phase of illness, and matched on a number of demographic factors with a nondepressed comparison group.
METHODS: Participants were 127 adolescents (44 boys), ages 14-18, who formed two demographically matched groups of clinically depressed and nondepressed participants. Adolescents were excluded if they evidenced comorbid externalizing or substance

These results demonstrate that bladder neck and proximal urethra are mainly innervated by the parasympathetic nervous system, whereas medial and distal urethras are to a greater extent under the control of the sympathetic innervation. The residual responses, insensitive to prazosin and atropine, may indicate a NANC innervation in the four tissues. However, the nature of t …

The "diving reflex" (DR) is a very powerful autonomic reflex that facilitates survival in hypoxic/anoxic conditions and could trigger multifaceted physiologic effects for the treatment of various diseases by modulating the cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems. The DR can be induced by cold water or noxious gases applied to the anterior nasal mucosa and paranasal regions, which can stimulate trigeminal thermo- or chemo-receptors to send afferent signals to medullary nuclei which mediate the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Although promising, these approaches have ye…

Diabetes-associated alterations in resting heart rate and blood pressure have been demonstrated in clinical studies and in animal models of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). These alterations may result from changes in the heart, vasculature or autonomic nervous system control. Using the streptozotocin- (STZ-) treated rat model of IDDM, the current study was designed to: (1) monitor changes in heart rate and blood pressure continually during a 10-week period in conscious unrestrained animals; and (2) determine if observed alterations in heart rate were mediated by changes in sympathe
