Evaluation of the Therapeutic Efficacy of Perceptual Learning Using the Bartimeus Training Program in the Clinic as an Additional Therapy to Glasses or Patching.

BACKGROUND: The Bartimeus training program (BT) is a perceptual learning task that consists of a drawing assignment performed in 12 sessions of 30 minutes duration. Here we aim to retrospectively assess visual improvement in children who underwent BT and in whom visual acuity had not improved by glasses or patching in relation to patient age and diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective chart analysis of patients who had undergone BT at our institution after consent. Visual acuity prior to and following BT was analyzed, as were diagnosis and age at BT. RESULTS: Thirteen patients (20 eye

[Treatment of retinal arterial branch occlusion with transluminal Nd:YAG laser embolectomy].

BACKGROUND: There is currently no effective therapy for retinal artery branch occlusion (RABO). Transluminal Nd:YAG embolectomy (TYE) was developed to achieve rapid reperfusion; however, it is still a subject of controversy. A Nd:YAG laser is focused on the occluded vessel, the vessel wall is ruptured and the embolism dislocates to the vitreous humor through the opening in the artery. METHOD: We retrospectively examined the results of five patients treated with TYE. RESULTS: The age of the patients was 26-75 years (mean age 58 years, median 68 years). Initial visual acuity was hand movements

The safety of intraocular methotrexate in silicone-filled eyes.

BACKGROUND: Intraocular methotrexate has been safely used in eyes with primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL), and in eyes with uveitis and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Dosing in silicone-filled eyes was reduced from a standard 400 microg intravitreal injection due to concerns of toxicity. The present study reports the visual results of non-PCNSL, silicone-filled eyes treated with intravitreal methotrexate using cumulative dosages ranging from 200 microg to 1,200 microg. METHOD: In this retrospective case series, all patients with silicone-filled eyes who received intraocular methotrexate were i

Flash visual evoked potentials predict visual outcome in traumatic optic neuropathy.

PURPOSE: To determine the significance of flash visual evoked potentials (FVEP) in the evaluation of patients with traumatic optic neuropathy (TON). METHODS: Eleven head-injured patients admitted to our center were diagnosed with unilateral TON. For every patient, FVEPs were obtained in both the affected eye and the unaffected eye. The normal eye thus functioned as each subject's internal control. We determined the amplitudes of FVEP waveforms for each eye and calculated an amplitude ratio of the affected/normal side for all individuals. The best-corrected visual acuity was obtained for each

Endothelial dysfunction of the cornea after exposure to sprayed venom from hornets.

PURPOSE: Ocular injuries due to Hymenoptera venom are uncommon and most injuries occur on the ocular surface. We reported two rare cases of corneal endothelial damage caused by hornet venom that was sprayed, not injected, through stinging in the eye. OBSERVATIONS: Case 1: A 57-year-old male patient was injured when a hornet sprayed venom into his left eye. He was referred to our hospital because the edoema and epithelial erosion of the cornea persisted. The patient presented with bullous keratopathy, asymmetrical iris atrophy, irreversible mydriasis, and glaucoma. His cataract progressed, and

Combined Central Retinal Artery and Vein Occlusion Associated with Factor V Leiden Mutation and Treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen.

BACKGROUND: Combined central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is an uncommon retinal vascular disease which causes sudden visual acuity loss and is associated with poor prognosis and the development of severe complications. We report a very rare case of combined CRAO and CRVO in a patient with factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation (only 3 cases published). To our knowledge, this is the first case of combined CRAO and CRVO treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). CASE AND RESULTS: A 49-year-old woman presented with complaints of sudden loss of vision in

Comparison of preoperative 10-Hz visual evoked potentials to contrast sensitivity and visual acuity after cataract extraction.

Cataract patients whose surgical outcomes were in question were referred for testing by visual evoked potentials, elicited through closed eyelids by a luminance stimulus (flash) that appeared 10 times per second. Visual evoked potentials were rated as normal (predicted acuity of 20/50 or better) or abnormal (predicted acuity of 20/60 or worse). Postoperative Arden and Optronix contrast sensitivities and visual acuities were determined in 37 patients who had no intraoperative or early postoperative complications. Arden grating scores of less than 100 were rated as normal. The optimal and cutoff

CMV retinitis in a stem cell transplant recipient treated with foscarnet intravitreal injection and CMV specific immunoglobulins.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis (CMVR) has been reported rarely in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In addition, little is known about strategies for ophthalmic surveillance and adequate antiviral treatment of CMVR. A case of CMVR in an allogeneic HSCT recipient is described, including clinical signs and therapy. An adult patient received HSCT from a matched unrelated donor for treatment of a Burkitt lymphoma. Donor and recipients were both CMV positive. Starting on day +40, the patient presented multiple CMV reactivation, treated with valganciclov
