Clinical validation of a wearable system for emotional recognition based on biosignals.

The AUBADE system can be trained to classify a subject's feelings into six different emotional classes, derived from three of the basic emotions (happiness, disgust and fear). The performance of different classifiers was examined. Biosignals were recorded from 24 healthy subjects who viewed pictures designed to invoke different emotional responses. A psychologist evaluated the emotional status of the subjects by looking at their faces. During the training stage, information from 15 subjects was used to teach the system how to discriminate the emotional status of the subject based on the biosig

Alcohol intoxication reduces detection of asymmetry: an explanation for increased perceptions of facial attractiveness after alcohol consumption?

Ratings of physical attractiveness are related to degree of facial symmetry. Acute alcohol consumption affects ratings of physical attractiveness and also attenuates aspects of visual perception. We tested the hypothesis that increases in ratings of attractiveness associated with alcohol intoxication can be attributed at least in part to a reduced ability to discern facial asymmetry due to reductions in levels of visual perception. We examined whether alcohol intoxication reduces ability to detect asymmetry in approximately symmetrical images. Sober and intoxicated subjects were shown a series

Gender differences influence brain's beta oscillatory responses in recognition of facial expressions.

There are only few studies describing gender differences in recognition of facial expressions. Our study has the aim to analyze the effect of gender differences in oscillatory brain responses. Three sets of Ekman and Friesens's facial expressions (neutral, angry, and happy) were presented to 26 healthy subjects (13 men) while recording from 13 different scalp locations. Occipital beta response (15-24Hz) was significantly larger for women than for men during the presentation of face expressions. Our results demonstrate that processing of emotional face expressions clearly differs between men an

Paradoxical enhancement of letter recognition in developmental dyslexia.

In a number of studies, children diagnosed with developmental dyslexia reached normal scores in standard visual processing tasks, and some researchers concluded that visual processing deficits are not involved in the syndrome. The tasks used, however, may be insensitive to anomalous visual information processing strategies used to compensate for an underlying deficit. To determine whether children with dyslexia use anomalous visual processing strategies, a same-different task was applied, in which 2 items identical under rotation and reflection were judged as same. Pairs of letters or dot patt

Apparent position in depth of stationary moving three-dimensional objects.

Motion signals contained within a stationary object projected on the fronto-parallel plane shift the object's apparent spatial position in the direction of the motion [see De Valois, R. L., & De Valois, K. K. (1991). Vernier acuity with stationary moving Gabors. Vision Research, 31(9), 1619-1626]. We report an analogous apparent position shift of three-dimensional objects that contain local elements that move in depth. Our stimulus was a transparent three-dimensional cylinder defined by 150 limited-lifetime dots, oriented such that it was end on and its tangent plane was circular. Dots moved i

Morphing Marilyn into Maggie dissociates physical and identity face representations in the brain.

How the brain represents different aspects of faces remains controversial. Here we presented subjects with stimuli drawn from morph continua between pairs of famous faces. In the paired presentations, a second face could be identical to the first, could share perceived identity but differ physically (30% along the morph continuum), or could differ physically by the same distance along the continuum (30%) but in the other direction. We show that, behaviorally, subjects are more likely to classify face pairs in the third paired presentation as different and that this effect is more pronounced fo

Implicit learning deficit in children with developmental dyslexia.

Several neuropsychological deficits have been reported as characteristic of the cognitive profile of dyslexic children. Phonological and visual processing are often impaired as well as auditory processing, attention and information processing speed. We investigated whether implicit learning, is impaired in dyslexic children and adolescents. Tests of implicit and declarative learning were administered to 18 clinically defined dyslexics and 18 similar age controls. Dyslexics showed a reduced learning rate in the implicit but not in the declarative task, suggesting a specific deficit of implicit

Parietal and occipital lobe contributions to perception of straight ahead orientation.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have investigated how peripheral stimulation affects the perception of body orientation in healthy subjects. The studies showed that opposing stimulation of two different input modalities can cancel out, leaving perception of body orientation unchanged. It was ascertained whether a comparable phenomenon could be found in brain damaged patients with two distinct disorders which individually lead to opposing shifts of the perceived midline. METHODS: The visual subjective straight ahead was measured in patients with pure neglect, pure hemianopia, or a combination of n

Synchronous change and perception of object unity: evidence from adults and infants.

Adults and infants display a robust ability to perceive the unity of a center-occluded object when the visible ends of the object undergo common motion (e.g. Kellman, P.J., Spelke, E.S., 1983. Perception of partly occluded objects in infancy. Cognitive Psychology 15, 483-524). Ecologically oriented accounts of this ability focus on the primary of motion in the perception of segregated objects, but Gestalt theory suggests a broader possibility: observers may perceive object unity by detecting patterns of synchronous change, of which common motion is a special case. We investigated this possibil

Effects of yellow optical filters on contrast sensitivity function of albino patients.

BACKGROUND: Yellow ophthalmic filters are often prescribed for albino patients in an effort to enhance visual performance. The effects of a moderate- and a high-excitation purity yellow filter on the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) of ten albino patients were investigated. Hue discrimination loss induced by each filter was also evaluated. METHODS: Three monocular CSF curves (best-corrected eye) were determined for each subject: one while viewing through a #3 Kodak Wratten filter, one through a #12 filter, and one used no filter. Panel D-15 color tests were administered to five albino pati

Language experience and right hemisphere tasks: the effects of scanning habits and multilingualism.

This study explores the effects of multilingualism and reading scanning habits on right hemisphere (RH) abilities. Native Hebrew speakers and Arabic-Hebrew bilinguals performed three tasks. Experiment 1 employed an odd/even decision paradigm on lateralized displays of bar graphs. Both groups of subjects displayed the expected LVFA within the range previously reported for readers of English. Experiment 2 consisted of a chair identification task designed to tap asymmetry of hemispheric arousal and a chimeric face task designed to tap RH specialization for facial emotion. Neither scanning habits

Evidence for a global scanpath strategy in viewing abstract compared with realistic images.

Scanpaths, the repetitive sequences of saccadic eye movements, occurred when subjects viewed slide projections of both realistic and abstract art. Variance analysis demonstrated that global/local eye movement indices were lower for local scanning by professional art viewers who relied on more global viewing, particularly in abstract images. Non-professional, unsophisticated subjects carried their local scanpath patterns from realistic images on to abstract images. The blink rate of professional subjects viewing abstract images was also significantly lower, indicating increased visual effort. N

Video material and epilepsy.

Nine patients who had epileptic attacks while playing computer games were studied in the laboratory. Patients had an EEG recorded as well as their response to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) at flash rates of 1-60 fps. In addition, pattern sensitivity was assessed in all patients by a gratings pattern. Only 2 patients had no previous history of convulsions, and only 2 had a normal basic EEG. All but 1 were sensitive to IPS, and all but 1 were pattern sensitive. Most patients were male, but although this appears to conflict with previously published literature results regarding the sex ra

Recession of the superior oblique tendon in A-pattern strabismus.

We performed 9 to 12 mm of recession of the superior oblique tendon for A-pattern strabismus in 10 patients. The average preoperative A-pattern measured 29.4 prism dioptres (PD), and the average pattern correction was 29.3 PD. All patients had a residual pattern of 6 PD or less (average 2.3 PD). No patient experienced significant underaction of the superior oblique, and other surgical complications, such as ptosis, Brown's syndrome, and laceration of the vortex vein or superior rectus, did not occur. The procedure corrected 14 to 40 PD of A-pattern. The amount of pattern corrected was correlat

EEG spectra in severely dyslexic men: rest and word and design recognition.

To identify and localize differences in brain functioning, electrical activity was recorded with a full complement of scalp electrodes in 14 healthy, severely dyslexic men (mean age = 22 years, S.D. = 3) and 15 matched controls during rest and during word and design recognition. The electroencephalograms were spectrum analyzed, and the mean amplitude in each of 5 bands--delta, theta, alpha, slow beta and fast beta--compared topographically between conditions and groups. The two tasks did not elicit differentially lateralized patterns of electrical activity, but produced anteroposterior differe

Speech perception and the discrimination of brief auditory cues in reading disabled children.

The processing of speech and nonspeech sounds by 23 reading disabled children and their age- and sex-matched controls was examined in a task requiring them to identify and report the order of pairs of stimuli. Reading disabled children were impaired in making judgments with very brief tones and with stop consonant syllables at short interstimulus intervals (ISI's). They had no unusual difficulty with vowel stimuli, vowel stimuli in a white noise background, or very brief visual figures. Poor performance on the tones and stop consonants appears to be due to specific difficulty in processing ver

Facial image and object constancy: a clinical experience and a developmental inference.

This report is derived from analytic data in the case of a young woman with a concurrent neurologic deficit, prosopagnosia. The condition consists of an inability to recognize or evoke the facial images of the most familiar persons in one's life. With this disability, will there be a corresponding dysfunction in the psychologic structuralization comprising object constancy? The clinical material presented indicates a lack of object constancy in this patient, as well as a corresponding developmental fixation at the rapprochement level of separation-individuation. Reconstruction of the patient's

Brain disconnection, schizophrenia, and paranoia.

A lateral deficit explanation of schizophrenic cognition maintains that a left hemisphere deficit is characteristic of nonparanoid schizophrenia whereas right hemispheric deficits may be common in paranoid schizophrenia. An alternate explanation postulates an interhemispheric deficit in schizophrenic functioning. A major piece of evidence for this position is Beaumont and Dimond's oft-cited experiment matching pairs of stimuli presented to left, right, and both hemispheres (Beaumont, J. G., and Dimond, S. J. Brain disconnection and schizophrenia. Br. J. Psychiatry, 123: 661-662, 1973). We expa

Problem solving in hyperactive, normal, and reading-disabled boys.

Diagnostic problem solving was examined in groups of hyperactive, normal, and nonhyperactive reading-disabled boys matched on age and verbal IQ. On the matrix solution task employed (a version of the game of 20 Questions) hyperactives used less efficient questions and strategies than the other two groups, in spite of the task being designed to maximize the performance of the hyperactives. Reading-disabled children were not significantly worse than normal children on the task. The results were interpreted as suggesting that the attentional difficulties of hyperactives retard the development of

The clinical utility of reproduction drawing tests with low IQ patients.

Bedside mental status testing in low IQ, poorly educated patients is often difficult. These patients, who comprise a significant proportion of the population served by major inner city public hospitals, have a limited ability to perform adequately on many higher cortical function tests. Because of this, it is often difficult to accurately differentiate between an organic brain syndrome and the effect of depressed intelligence in these patients. Copying line drawings and other constructional tasks are a very important element in a complete mental status examination, as they are frequently faile
