Can Peer Victimization Invalidate the Positive Effect of Emotional Intelligence on Adolescents' Health-Related Quality of Life?

BACKGROUND: Emotional intelligence (EI) is a key factor in adolescents' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Previous research has shown that higher EI is associated with better HRQoL outcomes. However, its protective role may be weakened by adverse experiences such as peer victimization. This study examined whether forms of peer victimization moderate the relationship between EI and specific HRQoL dimensions. METHODS: A total of 1427 Spanish adolescents completed a survey-based assessment, including validated measures of victimization (APRI-Bullying), HRQoL (KIDSCREEN-52), and EI (TMMS-24

Left Write Hook: proof of concept for a survivor-designed, and peer-led programme incorporating expressive writing and boxing to support mental health in adult survivors of child sexual abuse.

Background: Existing approaches to supporting victim-survivors (herein referred to as 'survivors') of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are resource-intensive and traditionally led by mental health professionals. Left Write Hook (LWH) is a novel survivor-designed, peer-led programme for survivors of CSA. By combining trauma-related expressive writing and non-contact, trauma-informed boxing, the programme promotes self-empowerment and supports survivors to rewrite their stories and reclaim their bodies. Objective: This study sought to demonstrate proof of concept for LWH as an intervention to enhance

Bridging systems and selves: a qualitative exploration of peer navigation as a developmentally tailored engagement strategy for adolescent HIV services.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent peer navigation is a promising strategy to improve engagement and health outcomes among adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV), yet youth-focused models remain underdeveloped and poorly documented, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Rafiki Centre in Eldoret, Kenya-one of Africa's largest adolescent health centers-employs young adults living with HIV as peer navigators to support clients aged 14-24. Peer navigators meet defined eligibility criteria, including secondary school completion, ART adherence, and viral su

A mixed methods cross-sectional study of peer support needs and barriers among multiple sclerosis caregivers in Ireland.

Peer support may help improve the wellbeing of informal caregivers, although little work has explored this in the context of multiple sclerosis (MS). This study explored peer support needs and experiences among MS caregivers in Ireland. A cross-sectional mixed methods survey of 27 MS caregivers, designed with public and patient involvement, measured peer support engagement, sociodemographic and care characteristics, caregiver burden, social support, loneliness and wellbeing. Data were analysed using descriptive, correlational and content analysis. Most caregivers expressed a desire for peer su

iMprovIng the meNtal hEalth of home healTh AiDeS: A study protocol for the MINDSET study.

Home health aides and attendants (HHAs) are a fast-growing healthcare workforce who are integral to the rising movement that allows older adults to age in place. However, HHAs themselves are a vulnerable group of caregivers. Mostly middle-aged women of color paid dismally low wages, HHAs' work is physically taxing, emotionally challenging, and socially isolating. Consequently, HHAs have high levels of depressive symptoms and stress. Prior studies suggest that HHAs want to address this, but do not know how and cannot access or afford traditional mental health services. Here we describe the prot

Do profiles of relationships with peers and teachers matter for early adolescents' mental health?

In schools, adolescents form relationships with both peers and teachers. Yet, research on the contribution of classroom relationships to adolescents' mental health has mainly focused on one relationship partner. This longitudinal study examined how positive and negative dimensions of peer and teacher-student relationships combine into relationship profiles (Objective 1) and how these profiles differ regarding mental health later on (Objective 2). A total of 828 fourth-to-sixth graders from 48 classes in 12 schools (53.6% girls; Wave 1: Mage = 10.61, SD = 0.90) completed peer nominations for th

Virtual Reality Learning in Suprapubic Catheter Insertion: The Role of Peer-Tutor Guidance Versus Teacher.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) training requires the incorporation of teaching resources into the medical curriculum. This study aimed to explore whether a peer tutor would have an equal effect on learning as a clinical teacher. APPROACH: Medical students at the University of Eastern Finland were invited to take part in a voluntary exercise. The exercise used the VR4HEALTHCARE software with OCULUS Rift S glasses to practice inserting a suprapubic catheter. A peer tutor or clinical teacher assisted the students with the system and content. Students were advised to rate their knowledge and pr

Facilitating access to supervised smoking facilities: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: The implementation of supervised smoking facilities (SSFs) as a harm reduction intervention has public health benefits for people who inhale drugs, but there are significant knowledge gaps surrounding the perspectives of SSF visitors and staff on their implementation and accessibility. We conducted this study to learn about their perspectives on barriers and facilitators to accessibility at SSFs. METHODS: The study used a community-based participatory research study design. PWUD and SSF leadership were involved in all phases of the research project as members of the research tea

Latent profiles and transition of child maltreatment and peer victimization among Chinese internal migrant children: Associations with their psychological maladjustment.

Internal migrant children often face dual challenges from both child maltreatment and peer victimization, yet the impact of various profiles of these experiences, along with their developmental transitions, on psychological maladjustment over time remains unclear. To fill these gaps, this study employed latent profile analysis and latent transition analysis to explore the associations between patterns of child maltreatment and peer victimization and psychological maladjustment (including loneliness, depressive symptoms, behavioral problems, and non-suicidal self-injury) and to determine whethe

Protocol for a Hybrid-type 1 pilot study of a randomized control trial of a brief, peer-delivered treatment to improve father depression and child mental health in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Few treatments specifically target father depression and alcohol use, despite their high prevalence worldwide and adverse impacts on families and youth. Fathers are also less likely to engage in treatment than female caregivers. To address this gap, a team of US- and Kenyan-based clinician-researchers developed Learn, Engage, Act, Dedicate (LEAD), a five-session, task-shifted psychosocial intervention for fathers in Eldoret, Kenya. OBJECTIVE: This hybrid type-1 study aims to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of LEAD, a peer-father delivered psy

Longitudinal Relationships Across Bullying Victimization, Friendship and Social Support, and Internalizing Symptoms in Early-to-Middle Adolescence: A Developmental Cascades Investigation.

Current understanding of the longitudinal relationships between different aspects of peer relationships and mental health problems in early- to mid-adolescence is limited. In particular, the role played by gender in these developmental cascades processes is unclear, little is known about within-person effects between bullying victimization and internalizing symptoms, and the theorized benefits of friendship and social support are largely untested. Addressing these important research gaps, this study tested a number of theory-driven hypotheses (e.g., interpersonal risk model, transactional mode

Parenting pathways to friendship: how Self-Control and emotion management skills mediate preschoolers' social lives in China?

BACKGROUND: Parenting styles have been identified as significant factors influencing children's social behaviors, particularly in their peer interactions. However, the specific mechanisms through which different parenting styles affect these behaviors, particularly among children aged 3-6, remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: Applying the theoretical frameworks of SLT and SRT, this study aimed to explore how authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles affect peer interactions in 3- and 6-year-old children, focusing on the mediating role of self-control and emotion management skills. Investigating Social Network Peer Effects on HIV Care Engagement Using a Fuzzy-Like Matching Approach: Cross-Sectional Secondary Analysis of the N2 Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Social network data are essential and informative for public health research and implementation as they provide details on individuals and their social context. For example, health information and behaviors, such as HIV-related prevention and care, may disseminate within a network or across society. By harmonizing egocentric and digital networks, researchers may construct a sociocentric-like "fuzzy" network based on a subgroup of the population. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to generate a more complete sociocentric-like "fuzzy" network by harmonizing alternative sources of egocentric and di

Changes in hospital utilization following peer-led intervention for substance use disorders in hospital emergency departments.

BACKGROUND: Emergency departments (EDs) often treat patients with substance use disorders for a variety of medical problems. The Mosaic Group's Reverse the Cycle (RTC) intervention integrates peer recovery coach (PRC) support within EDs to address substance use through universal screening, peer-led interventions, initiation of medications for opioid use disorder, and facilitating linkage to community-based care. METHODS: This study evaluated RTC services in seven Maryland hospitals (N = 10,462). Data on RTC services were linked with statewide hospital utilization data in the 6 months pre- and

Peer Relationships Are a Direct Cause of the Adolescent Mental Health Crisis: Interpretable Machine Learning Analysis of 2 Large Cohort Studies.

BACKGROUND: Converging evidence indicates an adolescent mental health crisis in Western societies that has developed and exacerbated over the past decade. The proposed driving factors of this trend include more screen time, physical inactivity, and social isolation, but their causal influence on mental health is insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to test whether and based on which predictor variables the development of mental health in adolescents in the last decade can be predicted and to better understand the causal chain of factors at work. METHODS: We im

Developmental changes in emotion recognition from human biological motion in children with intellectual developmental disorders and typically developing peers.

Individuals with intellectual developmental disorders (IDD) often experience difficulties in emotion recognition. Previous research has primarily investigated these difficulties through tasks involving emotional facial expressions. However, no study has yet explored emotion recognition through other modalities, such as dynamic bodily expressions. The current study aimed to investigate developmental changes in emotion recognition through human biological motion presented in point-light displays (HBM-PLD) in children with IDD. Forty-two children with IDD and 157 typically developing (TD) childre

Family Caregivers of Individuals With Neuromuscular Disease Participating in a Randomized Controlled Trial of a Digital Peer Support Program: Nested Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers have primary responsibility for providing care in the home for people with neuromuscular diseases (NMDs). This may negatively affect caregiver health. Peer support may enhance quality of life and reduce stress among family caregivers, but few trials have been conducted in NMD caregivers. Therefore, we conducted a randomized controlled trial with a nested qualitative evaluation (this report) of a 12-week digital peer support intervention for family caregivers of children and adults with NMD. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to gain insights into the perspectives

Explanatory and modifying factors of the association between sex and depression onset during adolescence: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is twice as high in women as in men and this difference already emerges during adolescence. Because the mechanisms underlying this sex-difference remain poorly understood, we took a bottom-up approach to identify factors explaining the sex-MDD relationship. METHODS: Data came from the TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS), a population study investigating youths' development from age 11 into adulthood. We assessed multiple baseline covariates (e.g., demographic, social and psychological) at ages 11-13 years and MDD

Association between childhood trauma and depressive symptoms in adolescents during the post COVID-19 pandemic: the mediating role of social peer rejection.

This study aimed to investigate the associations of childhood trauma and its facets with depressive symptoms in depressed adolescents during the post COVID-19 epidemic, and explore the potential mediating role of social peer rejection in these associations. A total of 413 adolescents with depressive disorders completed the Chinese version of the Child Trauma Questionnaire Short Form, the Social Peer Rejection, and the Children's Depression Inventory. Childhood trauma (β = 0.42, p < 0.01) and social peer rejection (β = 0.18, p < 0.01) were positively related to depressive symptoms, after adjust
