Professional tools and a personal touch - experiences of physical therapy of persons with migraine.

PURPOSE: The aim was to explore the lived experience of physical therapy of persons with migraine. METHOD: Data were collected by conducting narrative interviews with 11 persons with migraine. Inspired by van Manen, a hermeneutic phenomenological method was used to analyse the experiences of physical therapy which these persons had. RESULTS: Physical therapy for persons with migraine meant making an effort in terms of time and energy to improve their health by meeting a person who was utilising his or her knowledge and skill to help. Being respected and treated as an individual and having co

Creating a paper-based personal health record for HIV-infected persons.

A personal health record (PHR) contains information that a client believes is important to his/her health status; it can be either paper or Internet-based. The purposes of this action research were to determine the length of time an expert HIV nurse clinician needed to create a comprehensive PHR and to determine how hard it was for the patient to understand different components of a PHR. The average respondent (N = 9) was older, female, completed high school, African American, diagnosed with AIDS, and taking HIV medications for 11 years. The HIV nurse expert spent an average of 79 minutes prep

The heritability of avoidant and dependent personality disorder assessed by personal interview and questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: Personality disorders (PDs) have been shown to be modestly heritable. Accurate heritability estimates are, however, dependent on reliable measurement methods, as measurement error deflates heritability. The aim of this study was to estimate the heritability of DSM-IV avoidant and dependent personality disorder, by including two measures of the PDs at two time points. METHOD: Data were obtained from a population-based cohort of young adult Norwegian twins, of whom 8045 had completed a self-report questionnaire assessing PD traits. 2794 of these twins subsequently underwent a structu…

Oral ecology and person-to-person transmission of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis.

The ecological characteristics of the oral cavity are dissimilar for A. actinomycetemcomitans and for P. gingivalis, as judged by differences in their colonization preferences and patterns, associations with periodontal disease parameters, relationships with the subgingival microbiota and the type of periodontitis and their clonal persistence in the oral cavity. These features also suggest that as a periodontal pathogen, A. actinomycetemcomitans is different from P. gingivalis. Probably in most infected individuals, low levels of A. actinomycetemcomitans can persist for years in equilibrium wi

Clusters of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia: analysis of person-to-person transmission by genotyping.

Genotyping at the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the nuclear rRNA operon was performed on isolates of P. carinii sp. f. hominis from three clusters of P. carinii pneumonia among eight patients with haematological malignancies and six with HIV infection. Nine different ITS sequence types of P. carinii sp. f. hominis were identified in the samples from the patients with haematological malignancies, suggesting that this cluster of cases of P. carinii pneumonia was unlikely to have resulted from nosocomial transmission. A common ITS sequence type was observed in two of the patients w

Definitions of Person-Centeredness for Persons With Dementia in the United States: A Scoping Review.

Person-centeredness first emerged as a concept in dementia care in the 1980s. Nearly 40 years later, it has no universal definition, which limits operationalization and implementation of care and supportive services, measures, interventions, policy, and regulation for people with dementia. Thus, a scoping review of the current definitions of person-centeredness in US dementia care was conducted. Of the 71 included studies, there was considerable variability in elements/themes, complexity, and cited theories; the most common themes were needs and preferences, relationships, and personhood, all

The Mental Effect of Music on the Personal State in Terms of Depressive Personality Disorders.

The use of music as a basis for overcoming depressive personality disorders is possible only if the individual is ready for this therapy. Music therapy affects, first of all, the very structure of personality, its dynamic filling with current social and political tendencies, and allows to highlight problem areas, which are often viewed as complex in the structure of other psychological problems. The purpose of the current study was the determination and justification of the corresponding criteria in relation to this, as well as the methodology for diagnosing the studied phenomenon. The diagnos…

Euthanasia and assisted suicide of persons with psychiatric disorders: the challenge of personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia or assisted suicide (EAS) for psychiatric disorders, legal in some countries, remains controversial. Personality disorders are common in psychiatric EAS. They often cause a sense of irremediable suffering and engender complex patient-clinician interactions, both of which could complicate EAS evaluations. METHODS: We conducted a directed-content analysis of all psychiatric EAS cases involving personality and related disorders published by the Dutch regional euthanasia review committees (N = 74, from 2011 to October 2017). RESULTS: Most patients were women (76%, n = 52),…

Person-Centered, Skilled Services Using a Montessori Approach for Persons with Dementia.

The current mandate for person-centered care throughout the health care system, and especially in the nursing home industry, requires that speech-language pathologists ensure that the services they provide to elders with dementia are skilled, person centered, and relevant to positive overall health outcomes. Guidelines developed by the Association Montessori International Advisory Board for Montessori for Aging and Dementia are one avenue toward such skilled and person-centered services. The purpose of this article is to provide clinicians with practical strategies for guiding their assessment

Personality and longevity: knowns, unknowns, and implications for public health and personalized medicine.

We review evidence for links between personality traits and longevity. We provide an overview of personality for health scientists, using the primary organizing framework used in the study of personality and longevity. We then review data on various aspects of personality linked to longevity. In general, there is good evidence that higher level of conscientiousness and lower levels of hostility and Type D or "distressed" personality are associated with greater longevity. Limited evidence suggests that extraversion, openness, perceived control, and low levels of emotional suppression may be ass…

The heritability of cluster A personality disorders assessed by both personal interview and questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PDs) as assessed by questionnaires and personal interviews are heritable. However, we know neither how much unreliability of measurement impacts on heritability estimates nor whether the genetic and environmental risk factors assessed by these two methods are the same. We wish to know whether the same set of PD vulnerability factors are assessed by these two methods. METHOD: A total of 3334 young adult twin pairs from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health Twin Panel (NIPHTP) completed a questionnaire containing 91 PD items. One to 6 years later, 1386 of t…

A family outbreak of cryptosporidiosis: Probable nosocomial infection and person-to-person transmission.

Cryptosporidium is an important cause of community gastroenteritis, usually associated with drinking contaminated water, visits to swimming pools or animal exposure. In immunocompetent patients, cryptosporidiosis is usually a self-limiting disease but it can be devastating illness in immunocompromised persons. This report presents a family outbreak of cryptosporidiosis and describes a probable nosocomial infection with Cryptosporidium in one patient and subsequent spread of the parasite among members of his family. The index patient, a 72-year-old man with hemiparesis after his third stroke, d

The role of person-to-person transmission in an epidemiologic study of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

OBJECTIVE: Recent laboratory studies suggest that may be transmitted from person-to-person. Recent exposure to persons with pneumonia (PCP) among HIV-infected persons with and without PCP was assessed to evaluate the person-to-person transmission hypothesis. DESIGN: A case-control study design was used. METHODS: In Seattle and Los Angeles, a history of contact with persons with PCP was compared between HIV-infected patients with laboratory-confirmed PCP (n = 209) and HIV-infected patients with no history of PCP (n = 254). RESULTS: No association was found between past exposures to persons w
