Are mental disorders associated with recidivism in men convicted of sexual offenses?

INTRODUCTION: In offending populations, prevalence rates of mental disorders are much higher than in the general population. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether mental disorders can improve the prediction of recidivism beyond actuarial risk assessment tools. METHODS: The present prospective-longitudinal study was conducted between 2001 and 2021 and included 1066 men convicted of sexual offenses in Austria. All participants were evaluated with actuarial risk assessment tools for the prediction of sexual and violent recidivism and the Structured Clinical Interview for Axis I and Axis II disorde

Understanding personality pathology in a clinical sample of youth: study protocol for the longitudinal research project 'APOLO'.

INTRODUCTION: We propose that a dimensional, multilayered perspective is well suited to study maladaptive personality development in youth. Such a perspective can help understand pathways to personality pathology and contribute to its early detection. The research project 'APOLO' (a Dutch language acronym for Adolescents and their Personality Development: a Longitudinal Study) is designed based on McAdams' integrative three-layered model of personality development and assesses the interaction between dispositional traits, characteristic adaptations, the narrative identity and functioning. The stability of the alternative model of personality disorders: Example of the situation related to Covid-19.

AIM AND SCOPE: This article aims to explore the relationships between two key levels (Criteria A and B) in the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). Specifically, it examines the articulation between the level of personality functioning (LPF) and the pathological personality dimensions (PPD) to understand their respective contributions to personality disorder (PD) diagnosis. METHOD: We analyzed data collected through the LPFS-BR and PID-5-BF instruments from two randomized samples of non-clinical participants, gathered both before (n=124) and after (n=126) the COVID-19 pandemic a

A meta-structure for DSM-5 and ICD-11 pathological traits and the differentiation of personality functioning at different trait levels in older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Categorical criteria are not well suited to inform personality disorder (PD) diagnoses in older adults. More promising are the ICD-11 and DSM-5 alternative models. Both conceptualize PD by level of severity and maladaptive traits. Severity is conditional for making a PD diagnosis. Trait levels portray stylistic differences in PD expression. Yet, in older adults the hierarchical trait structure is unknown. Neither is the differentiation of the severity criterion from maladaptive traits confirmed. METHODS: A series of exploratory factor analyses with progressively greater numbers of

[The latent structure of psychodynamic and psychological personality models: Conjoint investigation of OPD-CQ, OPD-SQS and BFI-2].

The latent structure of psychodynamic and psychological personality models: Conjoint investigation of OPD-CQ, OPD-SQS and BFI-2 Objectives: Meanwhile, psychodynamic self-report questionnaires for the assessment of structure and conflict as aspects of personality have been developed. References to the psychological Big Five model, which is becoming more important due to the ongoing paradigm shift in the medical classification systems of personality disorders, are still unclear. Methods: The hierarchical factor structure of the psychodynamic scales of the OPD Conflict Questionnaire (OPD-CQ) and

Obsessive, compulsive, and conscientious? The relationship between OCPD and personality traits.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is defined as being overly controlling, rigid, orderly, and perfectionistic. At a definitional level, OCPD would appear to be highly related to the trait of Conscientiousness. The current study attempts to disentangle this relationship by examining the relationship at a facet level using multiple forms of OCPD assessment and using multiple reports of OCPD and personality. In addition, the relationship between OCPD and each Big Five trait was examined. METHOD: The study relied on a sample of 1,630 adults who completed self-reports of

Video game addiction in gambling disorder: clinical, psychopathological, and personality correlates.

OBJECTIVE: We studied the prevalences of video game use (VGU) and addiction (VGA) in gambling disorder (GD) patients and compared them with subjects with non-video game use (non-VGU) in relation to their gambling behavior, psychopathology, and personality characteristics. METHOD: A sample of 193 GD patients (121 non-VGU, 43 VGU, and 29 VGA) consecutively admitted to our pathological gambling unit participated in the study. Assessment. Measures included the video game dependency test (VDT), symptom checklist-90-revised, and the temperament and character inventory-revised, as well as a number o

Psychiatric symptoms and psychological profile of patients with near fatal asthma: absence of positive findings.

BACKGROUND: We examined the presence of psychiatric symptoms and personality characteristics in patients with asthma and near fatal asthma (NFA). An NFA attack is defined by the presence of one or more of the following symptoms: respiratory arrest, alteration in consciousness, need for mechanical ventilation, Pa CO2 > 50 mm Hg. METHODS: To assess the relevance of a specific psychiatric profile or the difference in personality characteristics existing in patients that survived an NFA attack and asthmatic patients. The authors interviewed a sample of 17 asthmatic patients who experienced one or

Adolescent personality factors in self-ratings and peer nominations and their prediction of peer acceptance and peer rejection.

In this study, the robustness of the Big Five personality factors in adolescents' self-ratings and peer nominations was investigated. Data were obtained on 2,001 adolescents attending secondary school (885 girls; 1,116 boys; M age = 14.5 years). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses on the self-ratings confirmed the Big Five personality factors. In contrast, exploratory analysis on the peer nominations revealed five different factors: Aggression-Inattentiveness, Achievement-Withdrawal, Self-Confidence, Sociability, and Emotionality-Nervousness. It is suggested that peers evaluate group

Mental health-related quality of life mediates the association between psychosocial factors and medication adherence in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Medication adherence remains a major challenge in the long-term management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While clinical determinants of adherence have been widely studied, the psychological mechanisms through which individual differences influence adherence behavior are less well understood. The present study aimed to examine a theoretically informed model linking personality traits, coping-related humor styles, mental health-related quality of life, and medication adherence in patients with RA. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of adults diagnosed with RA.

Look at My Body: It Tells of Suffering-Understanding Psychiatric Pathology in Patients Who Suffer from Headaches, Restrictive Eating Disorders, or Non-Suicidal Self-Injuries (NSSIs).

Background/Objectives: Adolescence is a developmental stage characterized by profound physical and psychological transformations, often leading to vulnerabilities such as body dissatisfaction, identity challenges, and the use of maladaptive coping strategies. This often leads to body-related psychopathologies, including headaches, restrictive eating disorders, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). The present study aimed to describe the typical functioning and features of these conditions and the differences between the three groups, and to identify the most effective assessment for predicting

Personality Traits and Self-Reported Vocal Fatigue and Other Voice Measures Among Teachers.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has examined the correlation between certain personality traits and specific voice disorders. These studies indicated that a predictive relationship exists between an individual's personality and their likelihood of experiencing certain types of voice disorders. The personality type classified as "extravert" was most commonly correlated with voice problems associated with high vocal use such as inflammation or nodules. AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between self-reported vocal fatigue, demographic characteristics, such as

Structure of Pathological Personality Traits Through the Lens of the CAT-PD Model.

Personality pathology is increasingly conceptualized within hierarchical, dimensional trait models. The Comprehensive Assessment of Traits Relevant to Personality Disorders (CAT-PD) is a pathological-trait measure with potential to improve on currently prevailing instruments because it has wider content coverage; however, its domain-level structure, which is of scientific and clinical interest, is not established. In this study, we investigated the structure and construct validity of the CAT-PD's domain level to facilitate wider use of the measure. We estimated five- and six-factor models with

A Brief Report on the Implementation of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in Clinical Practice.

The Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) was introduced in the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a dimensional alternative to the traditional categorical model. Despite considerable research, systematic implementation in clinical practice has remained limited. This article reports on the implementation of the AMPD in an institution that specializes in the assessment and treatment of personality disorders to offer guidance for other teams considering the adoption of the AMPD. Implementation involved developing a multimethod assessm

The Utility of Neuromuscular Assessment to Identify ADHD Among Patients with a Complex Symptom Picture.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnostic assessment of ADHD is challenging due to comorbid psychopathologies and symptoms overlapping with other psychiatric disorders. In this study, we investigate if a distinct pattern of neuromuscular dysregulation previously reported in ADHD, can help identifying ADHD in psychiatric patients with diverse and complex symptoms. METHOD: We explored the impact of neuromuscular dysregulation, as measured by The Motor Function Neurologic Assessment (MFNU), on the likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD, affective disorder, anxiety disorder, or personality disorder among adults (n

Development and Initial Validation of the Pathological Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Scale for Children (POPS-C).

Personality has repeatedly been shown to be evident and reliably measured in childhood. However, studying obsessive-compulsive personality (OCP) traits cohesively in youth has been limited, given the lack of developmentally modified assessments for the presentation. The current manuscript adapted an adult measure of OCP traits, the Pathological Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Scale (POPS), into a parent-report child measure (POPS-C). Study one explored factor structure and preliminary external validity with various clinical measures. Study two used a larger, independent sample to examine conf

Age-Invariance of the ICD-11 Maladaptive Trait Structure and Connections to Personality Pathology.

Abundant critiques of the categorical approach to personality disorders (PD) resulted in the launch of the 11th International Classification of Diseases dimensional (ICD-11) model. This model provides stylistic descriptions of PD expression by trait levels of Negative Affectivity, Detachment, Dissociality, Disinhibition, and Anankastia. Earlier studies on the structure of ICD-11 maladaptive traits with the Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (PiCD), provided support for a four-factor solution, yet age-invariance was not examined. Assessment can be hindered by age-biased PD features. Therefore, th

Rumination as a transdiagnostic process: The role of rumination in relation to antisocial and borderline symptoms.

The present study examined the influence of several forms of repetitive negative thinking on antisocial and borderline symptoms to identify underlying mechanisms that may contribute to the presentation and cooccurrence of these symptoms. Participants (N = 403), completed the Personality Assessment Inventory, the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4, and several measures of rumination/worry. Path analyses were conducted in which different forms of rumination/worry predicted antisocial and borderline symptoms across two personality disorder measures. Across both models tested, anger rumination…

Maladaptive Personality Traits and Their Interaction with Outcome Expectancies in Gaming Disorder and Internet-Related Disorders.

Gambling disorder and gaming disorder have recently been recognized as behavioral addictions in the ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases, 11th edition). The association between behavioral addictions and personality has been examined before, yet there is a lack of studies on maladaptive traits and their relationship to specific outcome expectancies. In study 1, we recruited a community sample (n = 365); in study 2 a sample of treatment-seekers was enrolled (n = 208). Maladaptive personality traits were assessed by the brief form of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (Diagnostic and
