The development and pilot testing of the OroFacial Awakening Symptoms Questionnaire (OFASQ).

BACKGROUND: The evolution of concepts that have featured the last decade in the field of bruxism led to the necessity of providing clinicians and researchers with adequate tools for the assessment of bruxism, such as the Standardized Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism (STAB) and the BruxScreen. The former is a multidimensional evaluation tool for the evaluation of bruxism status, while the latter is an instrument that could potentially find its applicability in large-scale epidemiological research projects for screening purposes. However, both tools lack the evaluation of orofacial symptoms at

Effect of Reduced Dialysate Flow on Dialysis Adequacy: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: The standard dialysate flow (Qd) for hemodialysis (HD) is currently set at 500 mL/min. One potential, sustainable, and cost-effective solution for eco-friendly HD may involve reducing Qd to limit wastewater. However, the effect of reduced Qd on small molecule and middle molecule (MM) removal remains to be investigated. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 74 patients on different maintenance dialysis modalities with Qd set at 500 mL/min (Qd500) were assigned to receive Qd at 400 mL/min (Qd400) for 3 months. Dialysis adequacy, including small solute removal and MM re

Clearing the airway? A pilot cadaveric study of the LifeVac™ device.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a leading cause of accidental death, especially among children and older adults. Suction-based airway clearance devices, such as the LifeVac™, an FDA-registered Class II medical device, have garnered attention as potential adjunctive tools in FBA management; however, data on their efficacy remain limited. This study evaluated the performance of the LifeVac™ in a cadaveric model simulating complete upper airway obstruction by commonly aspirated food items. METHODS: Fresh cadavers with intact upper airway anatomy were used. Grapes, hot dog slices, an

Evaluation of CIRBP and ONECUT2 for fatal hypothermia identification - a pilot study.

Due to the lack of specificity in diagnosing death from hypothermia through anatomical and pathological examinations, it is often necessary to rule out other causes of death, such as injury or disease. Thus, finding a method that can distinguish fatal hypothermia from deaths due to alternative causes poses a significant challenge in forensic practice. Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRBP), a cold shock protein, increases when the body temperature drops below 32 °C. Recently, an increasing number of researchers have focused on the role of CIRBP in response to cold stress. However, few stud

Stewards for future: Piloting a medical undergraduate elective on antimicrobial stewardship.

BACKGROUND: The rise of antimicrobial resistance as leading infection-related cause of death will necessitate trans-sectoral efforts on a global level. While many antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) incentives target healthcare workers, addressing undergraduates offers new and hitherto neglected opportunities. METHODS: We describe the pilot phase of a novel undergraduate elective ("stewards for future", SFF) for medical students at the Saarland University, Germany, between 2021 and 2023. We focused on knowledge and attitudes relevant to AMS. To allow for full immersion, we applied case-based lear

Iodine Fortification of Edible Legume Sprouts: A Pilot Biofortification Study.

Iodine has an essential role in the human body; however, its insufficiency is still a challenge. Therefore, the search for new strategies to increase iodine intake in the daily diet is fully justified, with sprouts as a preferred and interesting candidates for biofortification. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of different methods of iodine enrichment of legume sprouts (yellow lupine, lentil, red and white clover, and common vetch) as well as to identify the most promising species for iodine bioaccumulation. The iodine content in mineralized sprout extracts was determi

Impacts of rodents in piggeries in Australia - review and pilot impact study.

Research on the impacts of rodents in Australian piggeries has been limited. While rodent impacts are often assumed, the economic impacts and management costs are not well measured. Although the disease risk is relatively well-known, regular assessments are lacking. This review and pilot study aimed to assess existing knowledge on rodent impacts and conduct a small pilot study to gather information on their rodent problems, economic impacts, and challenges faced. The goal was to develop management strategies without relying on rodenticides. Piggery owners' main concerns about rodents include (
