This review summarises the current reconstructive urological procedures seeking to optimise urinary tract function. This includes nephrectomy to avoid complications in non-functioning kidneys and reconstruction of uretero-pelvic junction stenosis. Re-implantation of the ureters is indicated in case of reflux or stenosis. The technique depends on the defect and ranges from re-implantation to transplantation of the kidney into the pelvis. Intestine is used for bladder augmentation or to create a new reservoir. Urethral reconstruction is used for complicated strictures, while penile reconstructio

BACKGROUND: Advancements in digital cameras and the advent of smartphones have magnified the importance of clinical photography in facial plastic surgery. Here, we aim to examine the effect of different camera types, focal lengths, and distances from subjects on facial distortion.
METHODS: Twelve subjects underwent a series of frontal photographs using a smartphone camera and a full-frame digital single-lens reflex camera. Photos were captured at six distances from the subject. Seven focal lengths were used at each distance for the full-frame camera. Measurements of facial landmarks were made

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a rare but serious late complication of head and neck radiation therapy. The mandible, proximity of the primary tumor to the jawbones, radiation dose, poor oral hygiene, and smoking history are risk factors of ORN. ORN manifests as a chronic infection with exposed jawbone, which typically occurs in the first 3 years after radiotherapy; however, the risk for ORN development occurring in the patients who have undergone head and neck radiation therapy may be indefinite. Surgery has an important role in the management of cases of ORN, ranging from sequestrectomy, debrid

Supermicrosurgery was popularised in 1997 and is defined as a technique of microvascular anastomosis for single nerve fascicles and vessels 0.3-0.8 mm in diameter. It requires the use of powerful microscopes, ultradelicate microsurgical instruments and specialist dyes. The development of supermicrosurgery has vastly improved the ability of microsurgeons to create true perforator flaps with minimal donor site morbidity for reconstructive surgery and improved the precision of additional microsurgical techniques. This review outlines the origins and history of supermicrosurgery, its current appli

BACKGROUND: Reduction malarplasty (RM) is a common facial contouring procedure among Orientals. Currently, fixation methods selection and placement vectors are controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different zygomatic complex fixation methods on surgical outcomes stability after RM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 60 consented patients (120 operated zygoma) who met inclusion criteria were included. ITK-SNAP and 3D Slicer software were used to measure the displacement of the zygomatic complex using postoperative CTs (T1: one week and T2: six m

Minimally invasive surgical procedures aim at optimal wound healing, a reduction of postoperative morbidity and, thus, at increased patient satisfaction. The present article reviews the concept of minimal invasiveness in gingival augmentation and root coverage procedures, and critically discusses the influencing factors, technical and nontechnical ones, and relates them to the underlying biological mechanisms. Furthermore, the corresponding outcomes of the respective procedures are assessed and evaluated in relation to a possible impact of a minimized surgical invasiveness on the clinical, aes

Soft tissue reinforcement focuses on medical grafts that are designed to support and regenerate soft tissue under or near suture lines. Soft tissue is defined as areas of similarly specialized cells that function to connect, support, and surround other structures and organs of the body. These tissues include skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia, ligaments, tendons, fibrous tissues, fat, synovial membranes, and muscle. Most of the implantable devices used for this purpose are made of collagen, the most abundant protein in mammals and a key component of the extracellular matrix of soft tissues that

Transposition flaps are some of the most commonly used flaps for reconstructing scalp defects. Limberg first described his rhomboid transposition flap in 1946. Dufourmentel flap was an improved version of the Limberg flap published in 1962 in which the base of the flap is widened to improve vascularisation. Transposition flaps are one of the best known and most widely used transposition flaps in reconstructive surgery. They have proven successful in different types of reconstructive and aesthetic situations as a full-thickness random transposition flap. Combination of three Dufourmentel flaps

Although surgical techniques have developed, the incidence of secondary cleft lip deformities after the primary repair is still high. Asymmetry of Cupid's bow and philtrum is a common presentation and a technical challenge to reconstruct the upper lip. The authors introduce a technique to use the free grafts of the full-thickness scalp for the correction of scars and tissue deficiency in secondary unilateral cleft lip deformity. Thirty-seven patients with a prominent scar, tight upper lip, deformed Cupid's bow and philtrum, and irregular vermillion border were included in this study. The speci

BACKGROUND: To mitigate pelvic wound issues following perineal excision of rectal or anal cancer, a number of techniques have been suggested as an alternative to primary closure. These methods include the use of a biological/dual mesh, omentoplasty, muscle flap, and/or pelvic peritoneum closure. The aim of this network analysis was to compare all the available surgical techniques used in the attempt to mitigate issues associated with an empty pelvis.
METHODS: An electronic systematic search using MEDLINE databases (PubMed), EMBASE, and Web of Science was performed (Last date of research was M

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review describes the fundamental principles and recent advances in the reconstruction of total lower lip defects to restore peri-oral aesthetic and function.
RECENT FINDINGS: Modifications to the Abbe flap and visor flap have recently been described. Recent advances to free flap techniques have focused on dynamic restoration of lower lip sling function after reconstruction. This involves the transfer of innervated or noninnervated muscle tissue to reconstruct the lower lip to restore the sphincter function of the lips.
SUMMARY: The reconstructive goals for a full thic

With advancements in surgical instrumentation and techniques, the role of arthroscopic and arthroscopic-assisted surgical procedures is ever-growing. Arthroscopy offers direct, magnified visualization of pathology and reductions and is more accurate than relying on intraoperative fluoroscopy alone. It also minimizes soft tissue stripping, which is of particular importance to smaller fracture fragments whose vascularity is precarious and can be injured through open approaches.

BACKGROUND: Radial forearm free flap (RFFF) donor site closure is traditionally performed with split thickness skin grafts (STSG), which can be associated with poor aesthetics, wrist stiffness, paresthesia, reduced strength, and tendon exposure. Full thickness skin grafts (FTSG) are potentially beneficial as they provide a more durable coverage, and the skin graft donor site can be closed primarily, which is more aesthetic. The aim of this systematic review is to compare the outcomes of STSG versus FTSG for closure of the RFFF donor site.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed, following

BACKGROUND: Orbital defects have a profound impact on orbital function and symmetry of the face and are difficult to reconstruct given the complexity of this area. The paramedian forehead flap (PMFF) has not been well studied in reconstruction of orbital defects.
METHODS: Retrospective review of patients who underwent reconstruction of periorbital defects with PMFF between 2016 and 2021. Variables were ocular adnexal asymmetry, functional outcomes, and orbital complications.
RESULTS: Eighteen patients met inclusion criteria. Mean defect size was 11.1 ± 7.5 cm. The most common subsite involve
