["Protect the next generation": promote the end of female genital mutilation in the Kayes health district in Mali].

Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. FGM is not just a public health problem, but a violation of the human rights of girls and women. Equilibres & Populations and AMSOPT are developing a pilot project designed to promote abandonment of FGM in the Kayes health district by demonstrating that social change is possible and reproducible. The strategy is based on the organized diffusion of change among communities linked by marital ties

The twenty-year war over England's National Health Service: a report from the battlefield.

This article analyzes the latest battle in the twenty-year war to change England's National Health Service (NHS), starting with the internal market reforms introduced by the Thatcher government and now carried one step farther by David Cameron's coalition government. The government's program of change is characterized by (1) its wide scope and the organizational upheavals involved and (2) the fact that it is being introduced at a time when the NHS faces unprecedented fiscal pressures. The legislation faced strong political, public, and professional hostility both from those who saw it as a cri

BSE and variant CJD: emerging science, public pressure and the vagaries of policy-making.

Classical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was first recognized in 1987 in the United Kingdom and ultimately spread to cattle across Europe and to the Middle East, North America and Japan through the movement of infected animals and contaminated meat and bone meal. The human expression of BSE, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD), likewise was first identified in the UK and now has been observed in many countries due to human exposure to BSE contaminated products or to vCJD contaminated human tissues through transplantation and injection. BSE provides an example of an emerging infect

[Burundi: humanitarian mission (January-April 1994)].

The 1993 assassination of the President of the Republic of Burundi led to a bloodbath resulting in the killing of 700 000 people and 300 000 refugees in camps scattered throughout the country. After the emergency surgery phase, the French cooperation which was in charge of health care in the Gitega sector requested a humanitary mission. Two public health physicians, a polyvalent clinical physician, and two field nurses were sent. All were armed service personnel. From January to April 1994, after a preliminary assessment of the situation, this mission took charge of health services as well as

Barriers to accessing newer antibiotics in countries with high burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistant infections-a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections pose a significant health threat. Newer antibiotics designed to treat resistant pathogens may offer superior efficacy and fewer side effects compared to older alternatives. However, access to newer antibiotics remains limited in high AMR burden Asian countries. We aimed to explore stakeholder perspectives on barriers and potential solutions to improving access to newer antibiotics across Asia. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with stakeholders across Asia between April 2024 and April 2025.

Towards "Zero by 30", the Kenyan case: a systematic exploration of barriers to rabies policy implementation through systems thinking.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that disproportionately affects marginalized communities, despite the availability of effective vaccines. In response, the "Zero by 30" global strategic plan aims to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies deaths by 2030. However, localized barriers such as underreporting, fragmented vaccine supply and insufficient governance often impede progress, particularly for settings in Kenya. METHODS: To address these complexities, we employed qualitative system dynamics and group model building (GMB). We combined data from expert interviews (34 p

Assessing environmental sustainability of a vital crop in a critical region: Investigating climate change impacts on agriculture using the SWAT model and HWA method.

Drought is an occurrence that brings about significant changes to the structure of areas. Its influence is especially noticeable in important regions with dry and semi-dry weather patterns, leading to a range of difficulties including interruptions in food distribution systems, lack of water, health problems, economic declines, increased migration, and inadequate energy supply. The Ardabil plain, located in Asia and the northern-western region of Iran, plays a pivotal role in crop productions within an arid environment and holds significant political importance for the country. The main object

Barriers and facilitators to reducing low-value care for the management of low back pain in Iran: a qualitative multi-professional study.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder with a wide range of etiologies, ranging from self-limiting conditions to life-threatening diseases. Various modalities are available for the diagnosis and management of patients with LBP. However, many of these health services, known as low-value care (LVC), are unnecessary and impose undue financial costs on patients and health systems. The present study aimed to explore the perceptions of service providers regarding the facilitators and barriers to reducing LVC in the management of LBP in Iran. METHODS: This qualitat

Barriers and advocacy needs for hepatitis C services in prisons: Informing the prisons hepatitis C advocacy toolkit.

BACKGROUND: Carceral settings are a key focus of the 2030 WHO global hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination goals. Despite this, access to HCV testing and treatment services in prisons remains low globally, limiting opportunities to achieve these goals. Advocacy efforts are needed to address service inequities and mobilise support for enhanced HCV programs in prisons globally. INHSU Prisons, a special interest group of the International Network on Health and Hepatitis in Substance Users (INHSU) is developing a Prisons HCV Advocacy Toolkit to address this need. Here we present findings of a mixed

COVID-19 pandemic and mitigation strategies: implications for maternal and child health and nutrition.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to ravage health and economic metrics globally, including progress in maternal and child nutrition. Although there has been focus on rising rates of childhood wasting in the short term, maternal and child undernutrition rates are also likely to increase as a consequence of COVID-19 and its impacts on poverty, coverage of essential interventions, and access to appropriate nutritious foods. Key sectors at particular risk of collapse or reduced efficiency in the wake of COVID-19 include food systems, incomes, and social protection, health care service

Things must not fall apart: the ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Zero to 19 year-old children in sub-Saharan Africa bear a disproportionate proportion of the global burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Significant public health gains have been made in the fight against these diseases, however, factors such as underequipped health systems, disease outbreaks, conflict, and political instability continue to challenge prevention and control. The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) introduces new challenges to public health programs in sub-Saharan Africa. Challenges and opportunities for managing aquatic mercury pollution in altered landscapes.

The environmental cycling of mercury (Hg) can be affected by natural and anthropogenic perturbations. Of particular concern is how these disruptions increase mobilization of Hg from sites and alter the formation of monomethylmercury (MeHg), a bioaccumulative form of Hg for humans and wildlife. The scientific community has made significant advances in recent years in understanding the processes contributing to the risk of MeHg in the environment. The objective of this paper is to synthesize the scientific understanding of how Hg cycling in the aquatic environment is influenced by landscape pert

Measles and Rubella Global Strategic Plan 2012-2020 midterm review report: Background and summary.

Measles, a vaccine-preventable illness, is one of the most infectious diseases known to man. In 2015, an estimated 134,200 measles deaths occurred globally. Rubella, also vaccine-preventable, is a concern because infection during pregnancy can result in congenital defects in the baby. More than 100,000 babies with congenital rubella syndrome were estimated to have been born globally in 2010. Eradication of both measles and rubella is considered to be feasible, beneficial, and more cost-effective than high-level control. All six World Health Organization (WHO) regions have measles elimination g

Chemotherapy in the treatment, control, and elimination of human onchocerciasis.

Onchocerciasis treatment is one of the most positive stories in tropical medicine although major challenges remain to reaching the ultimate goal of disease elimination. Such challenges are to be expected when the therapeutic goal is to kill and safely remove a large multistage, efficient, metazoan infectious agent such as Onchocerca volvulus that has an exceptionally complicated relationship with its host. Successful control of onchocerciasis has often been hampered by host reactions following chemotherapy, that can sometimes cause significant tissue pathology. Presence of other filariae, part
