Characteristics and trends of newly identified HIV infections among incarcerated populations: CDC HIV voluntary counseling, testing, and referral system, 1992-1998.

Inmate contact with the correctional health care system provides public health professionals an opportunity to offer HIV screening to a population that might prove difficult to reach otherwise. We report on publicly funded human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) voluntary counseling, testing, and referral (VCTR) services provided to incarcerated persons in the United States. Incarcerated persons seeking VCTR services received pretest counseling and gave a blood specimen for HIV antibody testing. Specimens were considered positive if the enzyme immunoassays were repeatedly reactive and the Western b

What makes an obsession? A systematic-review and meta-analysis on the specific characteristics of intrusive cognitions in OCD in comparison with other clinical and non-clinical populations.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th ed. defines obsessions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as frequent, persistent, intrusive, unwanted thoughts that provoke anxiety and distress and lead to attempts to neutralize them with either thoughts or actions. However, no systematic review has yet evaluated characteristics that are specific to obsessions occurring in OCD. The aim of the current systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the specific features of obsessions occurring in OCD by comparing them to both obsessionally and non-obsessionally-themed intrusions in non-cli

Characteristics of respiratory viruses' circulation through a six-year period (2016-2022) in a pediatric population in Normandy, France, and the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.

The report highlights an epidemiological change in the circulation of respiratory viruses in pediatric populations due to strategies adopted against COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 has resulted in a significant increase in requests for multiplex respiratory research to identify the virus responsible for the symptoms. The diagnostic needs have increased, and the number of samples analyzed in 2021-2022 is equal to the samples analyzed over the four epidemic periods preceding the pandemic. The report suggests the importance of active surveillance of respiratory viruses' circulation and new recommenda

Characteristics and Prognosis of Patients With Fibromuscular Dysplasia in a Population of Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissections (from the French Registry of Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissections "DISCO").

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) are pathologies that appear to be closely related. This study compares the characteristics of the FMD population to the non-FMD population in a SCAD cohort. It thus assesses the involvement of the FMD phenotype in a SCAD population. From the data of the French DISCO registry, we included patients with a diagnosis of SCAD and in whom a search for FMD was performed. We collected the following characteristics of this population: the clinical and angiographic presentation, the data concerning the management, and the ev

Maternal and perinatal characteristics and the risk of cow's milk allergy in infants up to 2 years of age: a case-control study nested in the Finnish population.

This study examined whether maternal background and perinatal factors were associated with the risk of cow's milk allergy (CMA) in infants up to 2 years of age in a nested case-control study. All children born in 1996-2004 in Finland and diagnosed with CMA by 2006 were identified (n = 16,237). For each case, one matched control was selected. Information on maternal and perinatal factors was derived from the Medical Birth Register. The associations were analyzed by conditional logistic regression. Cesarean section (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.18, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10, 1.27) and h

Prevalence and distribution of cognitive impairment no dementia (CIND) among the aged population and the analysis of socio-demographic characteristics: the community-based cross-sectional study.

The epidemiology on "cognitive impairment no dementia" (CIND) and its natural history are of great importance for understanding the transition from normal aging to dementia. Epidemiologic studies of CIND, however, are limited in China. The goal of our study was to determine the prevalence and distribution of CIND in the aged population and analyze socio-demographic factors. To accomplish this, we performed cluster random sampling of 6192 people aged over 65 years in Taiyuan, a metropolitan city located in northern China. Socio-demographic factors were surveyed by self-administered questionnair

Comparison of pathologic characteristics of T1c and non-T1c cancers detected in a population-based screening study, the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer.

In recent years the introduction of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) determination as a screening tool for early detection of prostate cancer in asymptomatic men has led to a markedly increased detection of prostate cancers that are neither palpable nor visible with transrectal ultrasonography (stage T1c). In this preliminary study we assessed pathologic features and aspects that are indicative of clinical significance in T1c tumors and tumors with palpable or visible lesions (non-T1c tumors). Between June 1994 and December 1995, 51 consecutive radical prostatectomies were performed on sc

Fish consumption and other characteristics of reproductive-aged Michigan anglers--a potential population for studying the effects of consumption of Great Lakes fish on reproductive health.

There has been considerable interest in the benefits and risks of eating Great Lakes fish, particularly with regard to reproductive health. We report the results of a survey conducted from 1993-1995 among Michigan anglers. The survey was designed to identify a reproductive-aged cohort of persons who consume high or low levels of Great Lakes fish in order to study the impact of polyhalogenated biphenyl (PHB) compounds and other toxins on human reproduction outcomes. Using fishing license data obtained from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, we identified anglers of early reproductive

Clinical characteristics and survival of small cell lung cancer with limited or extensive synchronous metastatic spread - A German population-based cancer-registry based cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: While the concept of oligometastatic disease (OMD) is established in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), its relevance in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) remains unclear. We investigated whether subclassifying metastatic SCLC by the TNM-8 M classification and the number of organ systems involved provides prognostic value and informs the applicability of the OMD concept to SCLC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with stage IV SCLC diagnosed between 2016 and 2020 were identified from three German population-based cancer registries. Metastatic burden was categorized as intra-thoracic l

Association of patient and physician characteristics with androgen-deprivation-therapy intensification in patients with de novo hormone-sensitive metastatic prostate cancer: A population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment intensification with androgen receptor signaling inhibitors and/or chemotherapy is guideline recommended for patients with de novo metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC). However, most patients only receive androgen deprivation therapy monotherapy. The aim was to identify physician-, patient-, and tumor-related factors associated with the receipt of treatment intensification. METHODS: A population-based cohort study was conducted in Ontario, Canada, which included men ≥66 years newly diagnosed with de novo mHSPC between January 2014 and December 2022. Hie
