The doctrine of informed consent requires that health care practitioners provide each patient with sufficient information about a proposed treatment so that the patient can make a knowing, willing and intelligent decision about the recommended treatment. Twenty selected presbyopic patients were fitted with both monovision correction and Hydrocurve bifocal contact lens correction in a crossover study. Eighty percent of the population preferred bifocal correction and 20% preferred monovision. The results suggest that bifocal contact lens correction should be explored prior to considering monovision correction.

A method of retinoscopy is described in which an optical arrangement magnifies the patient's pupil and makes it easier to see the retinoscopic reflex. At the same time, the method permits retinoscopic observation by the emmetropic examiner without need for accommodation, a distinct advantage to the presbyopic examiner. The relationship between retinoscope position and dioptric power-error is linear, a feature that facilitates cylinder determination using a variable-distance technique.

Since it is well known that the eye musculature undergoes degenerative alterations in old age, the question arises whether squint operations are effective in presbyopic and elderly persons. Twenty-four patients with horizontal squint (average age 63 years) wanted the operation because of diplopia, asthenopia and, in a few cases, for cosmetic reasons; 5 patients were aphakic.
