[Measuring temporal transmission properties of the visual system. Diagnostic value in suspected optic nerve neuritis].

The temporal transfer properties of the visual system were examined in 157 patients with suspected acute optic neuritis or papillitis. Foveal modulation sensitivity was measured as a function of temporal frequency (DeLange curve) both for the affected eye and the unaffected fellow eye. Patients with acute optic neuritis typically show a reduction of foveal modulation sensitivity at all temporal frequencies, high temporal frequencies above 10 cps being more markedly affected. The aim of the present study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of this simple psychophysical procedure fo

Modulation threshold functions for chronically impaired Menière patients.

Detection thresholds for sinusoidally amplitude-modulated broad-band noise were measured as a function of modulation frequency for both ears of 6 chronic Menière patients who suffered unilateral hearing impairments. Modulation thresholds were measured with an adaptive cued-standard forced-choice psychophysical method. Better-ear modulation thresholds were similar to normative data previously reported [Formby, C.: J. acoust. Soc.Am. 78:70-77, 1985], whereas 5 of the 6 patients exhibited deficits in modulation detection with their poorer ears. Modulation thresholds averaged across the patients'

Stimulus intensity and loudness recruitment: neural correlates.

An abnormally rapid rate of loudness growth for given increments in stimulus intensity is seen both in patients with cochlear pathology and in normal listeners under conditions of wide-spectrum noise masking. The phenomenological similarity between these psychophysical observations raises the question of whether a single mechanism, or set of mechanisms, underlies them. Recent neurophysiological studies in animals have addressed the effects of cochlear pathology and noise masking on the neural correlates of stimulus intensity in the central auditory nervous system. A comparison of the data pres

The analgesic effects of aspirin and placebo on experimentally induced tooth pulp pain.

We examined the relative analgesic potency of aspirin and placebo in a within-subject-repeated-measure experiment using a precision tooth pulp stimulation technique with long-term stability (r = 0.93) for more than two months between measures. The attenuation of pain perception was evaluated using a standardized magnitude estimation procedure and constructing an individual psychophysical function for each trial. The data were fit equally well by either a straight line (Y = mX + b) or a power function (Y = mXa + b). Using the line fit and distribution insensitive conservative statistical tests,

Ability to judge lung volumes at different CO2-drives for ventilation and the possible influence of such a judgment on the ventilatory CO2-responsiveness.

Possible influences of changes in the CO2-respiratory drive on the ability to judge lung volumes and the possible effects of such judgments on the ventilatory CO2-responsiveness were studied in healthy subjects. The psychophysical relationships between objective and subjective magnitudes of lung volumes were determined at normocapnia, at three different levels of hypercapnia (breathing 1-3% CO2 in air) and at hypocapnia (after volitional hyperventilation). The relationships, expressed by a power function with the mean exponent 1.5 (SD +/- 0.3), were analyzed with respect to slope, intercept an

Intensity coding in the auditory periphery of the cat: responses of cochlear nerve and cochlear nucleus neurons to signals in the presence of bandstop masking noise.

The dynamic range over which fine intensity discrimination is possible has been reported to be largely unaffected by limitation of the spread of neuronal activity to neighbouring frequency regions by bandstop noise masking. We have therefore examined the responses of cochlear nerve and nucleus neurons to tone and noise signals in the presence of a bandstop masking noise designed to be comparable to that employed in the psychophysical experiments. Under these conditions, the vast majority of cochlear nerve fibres were saturated by sound levels at which some 50% of our sample of cochlear nucleus

Restitution of visual function in patients with cerebral blindness.

Patients with postchiasmatic visual field defects were trained at the border of their visual field. Using a psychophysical method, light-difference thresholds were determined repeatedly in this visual field area. Improvement in contrast sensitivity and increase in size of the visual field could be obtained by this training procedure. The improvement was confined to the trained visual field area and showed interocular transfer indicating its central nature. Althoughh only contrast sensitivity was trained, the observed improvement was not limited to this visual function. Visual acutity, critical

Cross-Modal Saltiness Enhancement by the Supercritical Extract of Zanthoxylum bungeanum: Evidence from Sensory Evaluation, EEG, and Taste Bud Cell Analysis.

Excessive sodium chloride (NaCl) intake is associated with adverse health outcomes, highlighting the urgent need for effective salt reduction strategies. This study investigated the cross-modal interaction between saltiness and numbness induced by a supercritical carbon dioxide extract from Zanthoxylum bungeanum (SCZ) in individuals with varying saltiness sensitivities. Integrating psychophysical evaluations, electroencephalography (EEG), sanshool component analysis, and molecular validation in rat taste bud cells, we demonstrated that moderate SCZ enhances saltiness perception and facilitates

Psychedelic 5-HT2A agonist increases spontaneous and evoked 5-Hz oscillations in visual and retrosplenial cortex.

Visual perception appears largely stable in time. However, psychophysical studies have revealed that low frequency (0.5 - 7 Hz) oscillatory dynamics can modulate perception and have been linked to various cognitive states and functions. Neither the contribution of waves around 5 Hz (theta or alpha-like) to cortical activity nor their impact during aberrant brain states have been resolved at high spatiotemporal scales. Here, using cortex-wide population voltage imaging in awake mice, we found that bouts of 5-Hz oscillations in the visual cortex are accompanied by similar oscillations in the ret

Hierarchical motion perception as causal inference.

Motion can only be defined relative to a reference frame; yet it remains unclear which reference frame guides perception. A century of psychophysical studies has produced conflicting evidence: retinotopic, egocentric, world-centric, or even object-centric. We introduce a hierarchical Bayesian model mapping retinal velocities to perceived velocities. Our model mirrors the structure in the world, in which visual elements move within causally connected reference frames. Friction renders velocities in these reference frames mostly stationary, formalized by an additional delta component (at zero) i

The role of legal medicine in the reconstruction of fatalities due to tractor rollovers: from evidence to proof.

Despite advances in engineering solutions, such as rollover protective structures and improved operator training, tractor rollovers in agricultural settings continue to be the main cause of death necessitating medicolegal investigations to reconstruct event dynamics and determine causal attributions. This study examines the distinction between evidence (observational data consistent with a hypothesis) and proof (conclusive data confirming a hypothesis) in the context of fatal tractor accidents. We propose a three-phase logic model which provides a conclusive reconstruction of the events by int

The neural link between stimulus duration and spatial location in the human visual hierarchy.

Integrating spatial and temporal information is essential for our sensory experience. While psychophysical evidence suggests spatial dependencies in duration perception, few studies have directly tested the neural link between temporal and spatial processing. Using ultra-high-field functional MRI and neuronal-based modeling, we investigated how and where the processing and the representation of a visual stimulus duration is linked to that of its spatial location. Our results show a transition in duration coding: from monotonic and spatially-dependent in early visual cortex to unimodal and spat

Neonatal methionine adenosyltransferase I/III deficiency with abnormal signal intensity in the central tegmental tract.

Methionine adenosyltransferase I/III (MAT I/III) deficiency is characterized by persistent hypermethioninemia. The clinical manifestations in cases with MAT I/III deficiency vary from a complete lack of symptoms to neurological problems associated with brain demyelination. We experienced a neonatal case with MAT I/III deficiency, in which severe hypermethioninemia was detected during the newborn screening test. The patient gradually showed hyperreflexia, foot clonus, and irritability from the age of 1 month onwards, and his brain magnetic resonance imaging scans showed abnormal signal intensit

Heightened Temporal Summation of Pain in Patients with Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders and History of Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) report experiencing trauma more often than healthy controls, but little is known regarding psychophysical correlates. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that adolescents and young adults with FGIDs since childhood and a trauma history (n = 38) would exhibit heightened temporal summation to thermal pain stimuli, an index of central sensitization, and greater clinical symptoms compared to patients with FGIDs and no trauma history (n = 95) and healthy controls (n = 135). METHODS: Participants c

The relationship between verbal and nonverbal auditory signal processing in conduction aphasia: behavioral and anatomical evidence for common decoding mechanisms.

The processing of nonverbal auditory stimuli has not yet been sufficiently investigated in patients with aphasia. On the basis of a duration discrimination task, we examined whether patients with left-sided cerebrovascular lesions were able to perceive time differences in the scale of approximately 150 ms. Further linguistic and memory-related tasks were used to characterize more exactly the relationships in the performances between auditory nonverbal task and selective linguistic or mnemonic disturbances. All examined conduction aphasics showed increased thresholds in the duration discriminat

Speed of perceptual grouping in acquired brain injury.

Evidence exists that damage to white matter connections may contribute to reduced speed of information processing in traumatic brain injury and stroke. Damage to such axonal projections suggests a particular vulnerability to functions requiring integration across cortical sites. To test this prediction, measurements were made of perceptual grouping, which requires integration of stimulus components. A group of traumatic brain injury and cerebral vascular accident patients and a group of age-matched healthy control subjects viewed arrays of dots and indicated the pattern into which stimuli were

Visual stability across combined eye and body motion.

In order to maintain visual stability during self-motion, the brain needs to update any egocentric spatial representations of the environment. Here, we use a novel psychophysical approach to investigate how and to what extent the brain integrates visual, extraocular, and vestibular signals pertaining to this spatial update. Participants were oscillated sideways at a frequency of 0.63 Hz while keeping gaze fixed on a stationary light. When the motion direction changed, a reference target was shown either in front of or behind the fixation point. At the next reversal, half a cycle later, we test

Neural correlates of coherent and biological motion perception in autism.

Recent evidence suggests those with autism may be generally impaired in visual motion perception. To examine this, we investigated both coherent and biological motion processing in adolescents with autism employing both psychophysical and fMRI methods. Those with autism performed as well as matched controls during coherent motion perception but had significantly higher thresholds for biological motion perception. The autism group showed reduced posterior Superior Temporal Sulcus (pSTS), parietal and frontal activity during a biological motion task while showing similar levels of activity in MT
